  • Port and Crime
PORT AND CRIME Paula Banerjee (Draft Only) Section I: Routine or Rarest of the Rare? Case 1 RPS Kahlon, the Chairman of Kolkata Port Trust, was arrested after he allegedly accepted a bribe of Rs. 20 lakh in a five-star hotel in Kolkata on 9 March 2016. The police further alleged that this was not the first time that Kahlon “had come under the scanner over the past few months.” 1 The bribe was given by a Jagtap Deoji who was into container business. Initially the duo was remanded in police custody until 17 March 2016 after which they were removed to jail custody. Predictably Kahlon’s lawyers were crying foul play. On trying to dig into this case we found two distinctly different version of who the real Kahlon was. One group of people describe him as a polite but strict officer. As the chairman of the Kolkata Port Trust, it was said that he took a number of “fearless steps,” of which one was to foreclose and remove the studio of a well-known film producer Srikant Mohta from the Brace Bridge area. The Calcutta High Court subsequently upheld the decision taken by the Kolkata Port Trust. Since Srikant Mohta was close to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, a group of people were of the opinion that Kahlon was a victim of foul play. 2 They alleged that this arrest was politically motivated. Kahlon, they said, was a nice man who had been victimised because of his opposition to Mohta. That is the reason why the state police did not involve the CBI before taking action against Kahlon.

  • Mountain, Water, Rock
Introduction In the Direction of Kedar When one had almost reached the Hindu shrine of Kedarnath, there used to be a point along the footpath following the Mandakini River where, in good weather, the top of the temple came into view against the backdrop of a bright, wide Himalayan panorama. In the related languages of Hindi and Garhwali, such vantage points bear the title of “Sight-of-God” (Hindi: devdarshini, deodekhni). Devdarshini is the point from which you are first able to glimpse the deity of a particular place, in this case Shiva in his Kedarnath form. Before June of 2013, devdarshini was located above the western bank of the Mandakini River, about two kilometers from the temple and twelve kilometers from the beginning of the footpath in the village of Gaurikund. The temple of Kedarnath lies on the valley floor at almost 3,600 meters above sea level, enfolded on three sides by mountains. Almost all travelers to Kedarnath, from perennial residents to first-time visitors to non-Indian regular visitors such as myself, used to stop at devdarshini to catch their breath, encounter the view, and take stock of the place where they were about to arrive. Devdarshini often evokes a strong response. I once spoke with a woman from the Indian state of Maharashtra who had come to Kedarnath seven times.1 She said that when she arrived at devdarshini she experienced what in Hindi is called sakshat darshan—a visual encounter with (or more technically a visual knowing of) the divine in its most true form.

  • Shree Travels
WELCOME TO SHREE TRAVELS Why choose us? We are a travel based local community spreading over Uttarakhand. Our team has more than 4 years of travel experience. We have enough knowledge of local places, routes of Uttarakhand which plays very important during organizing such treks. When you choose our packages one thing we ensure you that there will be no hidden charges. Itinerary will contain every detail and there will be no confusion what is included and what is excluded. What is unique in our plans? What make our plan stand out from other plans is that these plans are tourists and budget oriented rather than profit oriented. We have crafted these plan on the basis of health factor, age factor, weather factor etc. We have focussed on the fact that tourists spend more time on sightseeing than on travelling which is the ultimate goal of visiting Uttarakhand. Don’t fall for low price packages! While designing our travel Packages we came across many people who told us about cheap packages than ours. These low prices are nothing but a bait to make you book those packages. If you go with these packages you will find that you have to spend more than double the money (in transportation, Mules, luggage charges etc.) during the entire trip you booked.
