How's this version's relationship with the Jews and Judaism? In short, excellent. The New Jerusalem Version belies a deep familiarity with Jewish customs and sensibilities. For instance, the books of the Hebrew Bible are in the Jewish order rather than how they were later rearranged by Christianity. Similarly, the books are called by both their Hebrew and English names and the chapters and verses follow the Jewish numbering with the alternative Christian numbering in brackets. Personal names and words close to the Jewish heart are also transliterated so as to retain their original resonance.

    Versions and Translations The following outlines some of the key characteristics of several Bibles currently in use. A number of the Bible translations most popular in the Western world today can be found in searchable form online (see: http://www.ntgateway.com/bible-translations/). The King James Version (KJV) The translation was planned from 1604 and published in 1611 under the auspices of King James VI of England. This Bible has become one of the most influential English books in modern Western civilization. It served as a unifier of English politics and religious disagreements. The King James Bible uses an economy of words and voices beautiful cadences that have led many to call it elegant. It remains a favorite in many Protestant circles. The Douay-Rheims Bible The first English translation for Roman Catholics was produced in Douay and Rheims in France from 1582-1610. It is based not upon the Hebrew and Greek text but rather the Vulgate, the Latin translation that was the authoritative Bible for the Catholic Church for much of its history. Its close adherence to the Latin makes many passages difficult for contemporary readers to understand, and it has largely fallen into disuse in many Catholic quarters. It is sometimes called the Rheims-Douay Bible. The American Standard Version (ASV) The growing sense that the KJV was based on less-than-ideal manuscripts and philological knowledge led to the British Revised Version in 1885. An American edition, the ASV, came out in 1901 and represented several hundred further emendations to suit its American audience. The ASV is sometimes thought of as by students of biblical languages as a particularly “wooden” translation, and it does in some respects seek to replicate the feel of the original, for example in using “Jehovah” rather than “Lord,” or “Sheol” rather than “grave/Hell.” However, the ASV is also quite euphemistic in places.

The Jerusalem Bible was translated from the French version. Inthe English translation was completely updated. Jerusalem Bible - Translation method The translation from the Hebrew and Greek is literal with the notes and introductions reflecting the " higher criticism " approach. This method led the translators to come to some unfortunate conclusions, notably that the Pentateuch was not written by Moses a theory discredited by Jesus Himself in Mark Tolkien, contributed the translation of the book of Jonah. Tolkien also consulted on one or two points of style and criticized some contributions of others. Very little Roman Catholic "influence" is seen in the translation.     In the 2010-2013 Triennium, the Faith, Worship, and Ministry Committee undertook a study of a the new translation of the Bible published as the Common English Bible, which they then commended for use in personal devotion and study. During the course of this work, it became apparent that it is not well known that there is a list of Bible versions which are authorized for use in public worship in the Anglican Church of Canada. The English translations so authorized are: New Revised Standard Version Revised English Bible King James (Authorized Version) 1611 Revised Standard Version 1952 (and its revision as Common Bible) New American Bible 1970 Today's English Version (Good News) 1976 New International Version 1978 New Jerusalem 1985 The most used French translation of the Bible is the Traduction oecuménique de la bible, or TOB. The recent translation of the Bible into Inuktitut is cause for celebration across the whole church. Many other language translations are in use across the country. The following article is a reflection on the Bible as a 'translation' book, with particular attention to the English translations that have been authorized for use for public worship in the Anglican Church of Canada, and is offered for reflection. Lectionary is composed of the readings and the responsorial psalm assigned for each Mass of the year (Sundays, weekdays, and special occasions). The readings are divided by the day or the theme (baptism, marriage, vocations, etc.) rather than according to the books of the Bible. Introductions and conclusions have been added to each reading. Not all of the Bible is included in the Lectionary. How can anyone own the copyright on the Bible? Isn't it free to everyone? No one owns the copyright on the Bible itself. Rather, the copyright is held on particular translations or editions of the Bible. The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) owns the copyright on the New American Bible translation. Some versions of the Bible, such as the King James Version (not the New King James Version) are in the public domain. The copyright allows the owner to protect the integrity of the text so that individuals may not introduce changes without permission.

For example Doug Kutilek's “Is the King James Version a Roman Catholic Bible?” Recently I was at a Christian Forum on Facebook and I got more than a couple of remarks like: “Well, we can thank the Catholic church for the King James Bible” or “you wouldn't have the KJV without the RCC. They sponsored Erasmus (RC scholar) who rushed the manuscripts which are the basis for the the KJV.” Their argument goes something like this: the Textus Receptus Greek text was edited by Erasmus, the King James New Testament was based upon the Textus Receptus. Erasmus was a loyal Roman Catholic so the King James Bible has strong Catholic roots. As usual, the KJB critics’ argument is misinformed, deeply biased and misapplied. If a word has numerous meanings, as most do, how does the translator decide which one to use? Should the translation reflect a word- for-word translation (i.e., formal equivalence), or should it reflect the idiomatic language of the receptor language (i.e., functional/dynamic equivalence)? The major benefit of a formal-equivalence approach is that the translation maintains a feel for the language and format of the origi- nal text. The construction of Hebrew and Greek words and sentences is maintained, as much as possible, in the translation. But one needs only to use a basic computer translation program to realize that this approach can sometimes lead to a stilted translation. A functional-equivalence ap- proach, on the other hand, is more concerned with how the translation flows in the receptor language than with how it was written in the original language.

In this review I am going to treat 3 features: translation of the Bible text itself; introductions, footnotes and side references; print and size of this Study Edition volume.TRANSLATIONI am not an expert in this, but have examined different English Bible translations. This one is a critical translation from the original languages with advantages and disadvantages. I would recommend it for study purposes, but there are some silly things which make it unsuitable for proclamation and perhaps even for personal spiritual reading(e.g. it translates leprosy to "virulent skin disease" -- really annoying). The Old Testament can't be used in Catholic worship and could be problematic for others as well because it transliterates the tetragrammaton, instead of translating it to the traditional "THE LORD" or "GOD", etc.INTRODUCTION AND FOOTNOTESIt also has introductions footnotes and side references which are taken from the French "Bible de Jérusalem".
