  • End Time Chronology from Jesus in the Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21) Shawn Nelson
November 5, 2017 End Time Chronology from Jesus in the Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21) Shawn Nelson (1) How does Matthew 24 fit into our on-going study? The view we’ve been teaching (Premillennialism) says there will be a literal world leader (antichrist) who is able to establish peace treaty in the Middle East between Israel and her neighbors for 7 years (Dan. 9:24-27). In the middle of the 7 years he walks into the temple in Jerusalem, takes away the sacrifices (Dan. 12:11), and declares himself to be God (Dan. 9:27; 11:31; Matt. 24:15; Mark 13:14; 2 Thess. 2:3-4). He forces everybody to worship him (2 Thess. 2:4; Rev. 13:15) and requires them to have a mark in order to buy or sell anything anywhere in the world (Rev. 13:16). Matthew 24 helps us see that Jesus’ taught the above scenario too. Jesus mentions all of the following: the existence of the nation of Israel, the temple in Jerusalem, the antichrist, tribulation, the second coming (and possibly rapture). The Temple to Be Destroyed 24 Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. 2 And Jesus said to them, “Do you not see all these things? [the Jerusalem temple] Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down.” The Disciples’ Two Questions 3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? [temple being destroyed] And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” The Tribulation 4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you.

  • How Can We Know the Way?
How Can We Know the Way? Sermon for the Fifth Sunday of Easter The Ninth Sunday of Our Pandemic Crisis May 10, 2020 Bethany Congregational Church, United Church of Christ Foxborough, Massachusetts Rev. Bruce A. Greer, Interim Pastor Text: John 14:5 “Thomas said to [Jesus]: ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’” I. When Thomas asked Jesus “How can we know the way?” he wasn’t asking for directions. No Google Map or GPS device could answer his question. We ask questions like this when we are disoriented, when our resources are uncertain and the outcome is unknown. A question like this cries out for guidance and assurance, not directions from Point A to Point B. Put yourself in the context of the question. Jesus gathered his disciples for what would be their last supper.1 His death was imminent, so he said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be trou- bled. Believe in God, believe also in me.”2 He assured them of God’s presence and guidance on their way forward. He assumed that the disciples already knew this. Throughout John’s Gospel, we find the disciples consistently confused by Jesus, repeatedly miss- ing the point. What did Jesus mean? Where was he going? What will happen to him and to their movement? It was an anxious time filled with tension and concern. You can feel it in Thomas’s question: “Lord we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”3 We’ve all been in situations like this, wondering about the way forward.

  • “The Problem with the Disciples”
“The Problem with the Disciples” a sermon by Dr. William P. Wood First Presbyterian Church Charlotte, North Carolina Holy Week April 16, 2003 Text: “All of them deserted him and fled” (Mark 14:50). There is a riddle in Mark’s gospel, which has to do with the role of Jesus’ disciples. On the one hand, the disciples play a very positive role. The ministry of Jesus begins with the call of the disciples. He goes by the Sea of Galilee where Simon and Andrew are fishing with their nets. Jesus says, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” The same is true with James and John. They left and followed. Moreover, the disciples stay with Jesus from Galilee, to Caesarea Philippi, to Jerusalem. Peter reminded Jesus of this when he said, “We have left everything and followed you.” And they had. I. But in spite of this more positive picture of the disciples, there is yet another one, which is negative in outlook. As Paul Achtemeier puts it in his little book, Mark, “If there is any progression in the picture Mark paints of the disciples, it appears to be from bad to worse.” This shift in Mark’s gospel is a shift from the misunderstanding of Jesus to a rejection of him. In the early chapters of Mark’s gospel, the disciples don’t seem to understand what this is about. Granted, the demons recognize him as the Son of God (Mark 1:24, 34). Moreover, the crowd that surrounds him recognizes him as one with authority and responds to him in a positive way.

  • How to Restart an Oracle: Politics, Propaganda, and the Oracle of Apollo
How to Restart an Oracle: Politics, Propaganda, and the Oracle of Apollo at Didyma c.305-300 BCE The Sacred Spring at Didyma dried up when the Persians deported the Branchidae to central Asia at the conclusion of the Ionian revolt c.494. It remained barren throughout the fifth and most of the fourth centuries and thus prophecy did not flow. However, when Alexander the Great liberated Miletus in 334, the spring was reborn and with it returned the gift of prophecy. After nearly two centuries, the new oracle at Didyma was not the same as the old one. This begs the question, how does one restart an oracle? The usual account is that Alexander appointed a new priestess, who immediately predicted his victory over Persia and referred to him as a god. In the historical tradition, largely stemming from Callisthenes, the renewed oracle is thus linked to Alexander, but words are wind and tradition can be manipulated. There are issues with the canonical chronology: Miletus reverted briefly to Persian control in Alexander’s wake; the Branchidae, the hereditary priests, still lived in central Asia (Hammond 1998; Parke 1985); and, most tellingly, construction on a new temple did not start for another thirty years. In fact, the renewal of the oracle only appears after Seleucus, who supposedly received three favorable oracles in 334, found the original cult statue and returned it to Miletus (Paus. 1.16.3). In the satiric account of the prophet Alexander, Lucian of Samosata declares the oracles of old, including Delphi, Delos, Claros, and Branchidae (Didyma), became wealthy by exploiting the credulity and fears of wealthy tyrants (8).
