Spring Break Activities For students and families March 9 – 13, 2020

2020 World Ice Championships 833-442-3278 State Fairgrounds, 1800 College Road, Fairbanks

Open daily beginning February 15, 2020 and (weather permitting) running through March 31, 2020 The World Ice Art Championships are an important celebration of spring in . Such gatherings, in March, date back to the thirties, when residents emerged from the long winter with an eye for having some fun.

In 1995, the event moved to the middle of Fairbanks where it spent the last 16 years and has now moved to the Tanana Valley Grounds. This new venue location will also allow us to fulfill one of the Ice Alaska dreams, to be able to incorporate more outdoor festivities into our event. Ice Alaska is in its 30th year hosting one of the largest annual ice art competitions and exhibitions worldwide.

The Fairbanks event, the World Ice Art Championships, has grown from a one-week, 8-team competition in 1990, to a month-long attraction involving over 70 teams from all over the world. The competitions, and the accompanying outdoor winter activities, attract more than 100 ice artists.

The World Ice Art Championships provide an opportunity to appreciate breathtaking art and learn about many cultures, since typically one-third of the sculptors and many visitors are of international origin. Ice Alaska has developed different programs for teaching ice sculpting and the interactive ice sculptures in the kid’s park are often designed to provide an educational benefit.

With the efforts of approximately 300 volunteers and artists, and support from over 50 local businesses and community organizations have made all this possible.

Competitive Events: Saturday, February 15 thru Thursday, February 20 Multi Block Classic Saturday, February 15 thru Thursday, February 20 Amateur Exhibition Sunday, February 23 thru Tuesday, February 25 TWO Person Classic Friday, February 28 thru Saturday, March 1 One Person Classic Monday, March 10 thru Wednesday, March 12 Youth Classic Competition

JOM Alaska Native Youth Basketball Tournament 456-6646 Tanana Middle School, 600 Trainor Gate Road, Fairbanks

Monday, March 9 – Wednesday, March 11 Hosted by Fairbanks Native Association and Johnson O’Malley

How did the FNA/JOM Alaska Native Youth Basketball Tournament get started? Seventeen years ago Linda Woods, FNA/JOM Director and Freda Williams, former FNA/Community Services Director were sitting around talking about the big upcoming “Native Week”, referring to the annual Tanana Chiefs Convention, Doyon, Limited Annual Meeting and FNA’s Annual Meeting and Potlatch. We talked about what a busy time this was for the native community, but very few activities for the kids which didn’t cost anything was going on. The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District (FNSBSD) Spring Break also coincided with this busy time. It was then that we felt FNA could put something together and since our kids love basketball we would host a tournament.

This idea seemed exciting also because of remarks parents and guardians made about our talented Native basketball players who seemed to be “bench warmers” for their school teams and got very little, if any playing time, during games. The first few years only students in the Fairbanks schools were invited. Soon we got requests from several villages asking if their children could participate, and we saw no reason why they couldn’t. From then on the tournament grew as word got out that we welcomed students from outside Fairbanks.

As the tournament grew of course the cost increased. We began seeking sponsors and have been grateful for the generous organizations and businesses that have supported us from year to year. All of our coaches, concessionaires, gatekeepers, monitors, 1st Aide support, score and time keepers are volunteers. The FNSBSD graciously allows us to hold our tournament at Tanana Middle School. It is a pleasure watching our Native community come together for our children’s enjoyment, playing a game they love, Basketball!

Moose Mountain Ski Resort 459-8132 3840 Moose Mountain Road

Moose Mountain will be open Thursday thru Sunday during Spring Break. Moose Mountain Ski Resort is interior Alaska’s largest alpine ski and snowboard area. With 750 acres, over a mile wide and a mile long, and 1300 vertical feet, “the Moose” has everything from a short beginner tow at the base lodge to long gentle cruisers and steep, narrow black diamond runs that can challenge the best skiers and boarders.

Moose Mountain has many south facing runs, allowing for sunny skiing above the inversion every day of the season. The average inversion is 20-30 degrees warmer than the flats of the Tanana Valley, and the views are impressive. The prevailing cold weather wind in winter is from the northeast, and southwest facing runs are fully sheltered with tree cover to the top of the mountain.

Moose Mountain is the only known ski area with the primary lift system a fleet of school buses, capable of 100 skiers per hour per bus. When they need to up the capacity, they add more buses. Enjoy a snack, post a pic of your last run on social media, chat with your friends, and unzip your coat. It is only a 10-minute ride, while a standard speed chairlift would take 13-15 minutes to get you there, unprotected from the elements. After 25 years, they have never had a compelling reason to change, and the buses allow them to remain one of the least expensive ski areas of their size.

Moose Mountain also has a new beginner tow, which is popular not just with the tourists waiting for darkness and aurora, but also with parents and kids from the Interior. It is right outside the lodge, so observers can watch in warmth and comfort.
