Preparations for Hosting 2015 Alaska Society of American Foresters Meeting In 2014, the Yukon River Chapter’s offer to host the 2015 annual state SAF meeting in Fairbanks was accepted and preparations began in late spring. The theme of “forest roads” was selected, and the meeting planning committee met regularly during the year to put together the agenda and event activities. Several YRC members attended the 2014 AK SAF meeting in Juneau to help prepare for the 2015 meeting. Firewood Workshop This was the fourth year the Yukon River Chapter co-sponsored the Firewood Workshop with the Cooperative Extension Service. This event was held on the University of Alaska campus and provided a wide range of useful information to the public on where and how to safely harvest firewood, properly store firewood, and importantly how to safely burn firewood in your home heating device. A local vendor gave a presentation on woodstove and stovepipe maintenance, and described how to properly use a catalytic wood stove. Forest Sports Festival The 17th Annual Farthest North Forest Sports Festival in 2014 included as usual several members of the Yukon River Chapter of SAF who serve as organizers and volunteers for this event.

    Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Spring Break Activities For students and families March 8 – 12, 2021 2021 World Ice Alaska Championships 833-442-3278 Tanana Valley State Fairgrounds, 1800 College Road, Fairbanks Open daily beginning February 15, 2021 and (weather permitting) running through late March. Open 11:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. until daylight savings 3/14/2021 then Noon - 11:00 p.m. Daily. The World Ice Art Championships are an important celebration of spring in interior Alaska. Such gatherings, in March, date back to the thirties, when residents emerged from the long winter with an eye for having some fun. In 1995, the event moved to the middle of Fairbanks where it spent the last 16 years and has now moved to the Tanana Valley State Fair Grounds. This new venue location will also allow us to fulfill one of the Ice Alaska dreams, to be able to incorporate more outdoor festivities into our event. Ice Alaska is in its 30th year hosting one of the largest annual ice art competitions and exhibitions worldwide. The Fairbanks event, the World Ice Art Championships, has grown from a one-week, 8-team competition in 1990, to a month-long attraction involving over 70 teams from all over the world. The competitions, and the accompanying outdoor winter activities, attract more than 100 ice artists. The World Ice Art Championships provide an opportunity to appreciate breathtaking art and learn about many cultures, since typically one-third of the sculptors and many visitors are of international origin. Ice Alaska has developed different programs for teaching ice sculpting and the interactive ice sculptures in the kid’s park are often designed to provide an educational benefit.

Move-in: Thursday, May 13 11am-7pm Friday, May 14 9am-2pm Show Hours: Friday, May 14 2pm-6pm Saturday, May 15 10am - 6pm Sunday, May 16 11am - 5pm Move-out: Sunday, May 16 5pm -10pm * Booth fees are due in full at this time. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING!! • We will be recommending the public wear a mask and recommend the same of the vendors. It is not required unless a mandate is put out, but it may make customers more comfortable to approach your booth. If you have any sort of product or demonstration that requires you to touch a customer, then masks are required for you. • All vendors must have hand sanitizer available for customers at their booth. Any interaction must be able to be sanitized. • Tents are not included with the outdoor spaces. If you bring your own, it must be weighted on all 4 corners by at least 20lb weights. Cinderblocks secured to the poles with ratchet straps work well. If you use a 5-gallon bucket full of water or sand, please know that securing to the bucket handle is not sufficient as it will break off with a good gust of wind. Another good option is a 5-gallon water jug with the strap through the handle. • Tables, chairs, and electricity are not included for either indoor or outdoor spaces.
