The Tension Between Artistic Autonomy and Social Engagement in Les Temps Nouveaux, 1896–1903 Laura Prins HCM 4 (1): 92–126 DOI: 10.18352/hcm.505 Abstract Between 1896 and 1903, Jean Grave, editor of the anarchist journal Les Temps Nouveaux, published an artistic album of original prints, with the collaboration of (avant-garde) artists and illustrators. While anar- chist theorists, including Grave, summoned artists to create social art, which had to be didactic and accessible to the working classes, artists wished to emphasize their autonomous position instead. Even though Grave requested ‘absolutely artistic’ prints in the case of this album, artists had difficulties with creating something for him, trying to com- bine their social engagement with their artistic autonomy. The artistic album appears to have become a compromise of the debate between the anarchist theorists and artists with anarchist sympathies. Keywords: anarchism, France, Neo-Impressionism, nineteenth century, original print Introduction While the Neo-Impressionist painter Paul Signac (1863–1935) was preparing for a lecture in 1902, he wrote, ‘Justice in sociology, har- mony in art: same thing’.1 Although Signac never officially published the lecture, his words have frequently been cited by scholars since the 1960s, who claim that they illustrate the widespread modern idea that any revolutionary avant-garde artist automatically was revolutionary in 92 HCM 2016, VOL. -

Although the areas of Old Master drawings, early British drawings and watercolours, 19th Century and Modern drawings have long been regarded as disparate fields, part of the purpose of this annual catalogue is to blur the distinction between these collecting areas. -

Cenni biografici Pittore, grafico, designer tedesco, Joseph Albers comincia ad insegnare a Lagenhorst in Germania nel 1908, continuando a studiare fino agli anni Venti: prima a Essen e a Berlino per imparare le tecniche a stampa; poi disegno a Monaco come allievo di Franz von Stuck. Nel 1920, s’iscrive al Bauhaus di Weimar, dove segue i corsi di Johannes Itten e si specializza con un percorso autonomo nella pittura su vetro. È in quegli anni che disegna una serie di vetrate e mobili per Walter Gropius, direttore del medesimo istituto. Quando Itten lascia il Bauhaus, Albers prende il suo posto tenendo corsi sul design, l’architettura d’interni e i materiali. Nel 1925, dopo essersi trasferito con la moglie Anni a Dessau, è nominato Professore al Bauhaus. Dal 1926 alla seconda Guerra Mondiale, produce oggettistica e arredo, continuando ad insegnare e viaggiando per conferenze e mostre in Germania e Europa. Nel 1930, è vicedirettore del Bauhaus presieduto dal 1928 da Hannes Meyer, che gli organizza nel 1932 la prima monografica dei suoi lavori su vetro. È nel 1935 che produce i suoi primi oli astratti, dopo che la guerra lo obbliga ad espatriare in America. Continua ad insegnare, inizialmente al Black Mountain College nel North Carolina (di cui diventa rettore nel 1948), mentre comincia a viaggiare in Sudamerica (soprattutto in Messico). Dal 1950, si sposta in molte università americane come “visiting professor” e dà vita alla celebre serie di Omaggi al quadrato. -

Clarisse, artiste dieppois, a peint à ses côtés, et dit de lui : “qu’il était un peintre très habile et rapide pour saisir un instant, un homme sympathique, disponible et curieux.” Albert Malet est né à Bosc-le-Hard, le 5 avril 1912. Il était instituteur et peintre “amateur”. Il faisait partie de l’École de Rouen, et avait comme professeur référent, le rouennais Robert Antoine Pinchon (1886-1943). -

In the evening, he took painting and drawing lessons with Gustave Morin. Nevertheless, he quickly get bored of doing copies of antique plasters and prefered to paint outside, looking for inspiration in the surrounding countryside. In 1872, he was noticed by a collector who proposed him to become a drawing teacher at the Fine Arts school in Algiers, where he stayed for five years. During this time, Albert Lebourg devoted himself to painting, inspired by the light variations. He liked to paint l'Amirauté, its embankments and its green balconies, the mosque Jamaa al-Jdid, also named mosque of the Pêcherie, and the little streets of the white city. Lebourg often painted the same motifs at different moments of the day. His palette brightened and his style was completely impressionnist. However, the artist was still ignorant of this new artistic movement that he will discover when he got back in France in 1877. -
