PART 1 LOCAL 216 COLLECTION

Local 216, UAW was organized in February of 1937. The local serves as bargaining agent at General Motors, Buick - Oldsmobile - Pontiac, South Gate, plant. Materials in the collection include items from the earliest days of the local to the late 1940's, with a few stray items from the 1950's. Particularly wed 1 documented in this collection is the nation-wide GM strike of the winter of 1945-46. (See'~ on page 2)

Boxes 1-7 Office File. Arranged alphabetically by subject and chronOlogically within each subject. Among the seVeral topics are such items as; agreements (local and national,) financial reports, handbills, membership lists, petitions, resolutions, strike material, UAW press releases and "age rates.

Boxes 8-12 Correspondence. Arranged chronologically and covers the period 1937-1961. Among the corres­ pondents are: Former Assistant Attorney General of the U.S. Thurman Arnold; former Cal ifornia Senators Sheridan Downey, and 14illiam Knowland; Homer Martin; George Addes; \darter Reuther; and R.J. Thomas of the UAI4.
