The local serves as bargaining agent at General Motors, Buick - Oldsmobile - Pontiac, South Gate, California plant. Materials in the collection include items from the earliest days of the local to the late 1940's, with a few stray items from the 1950's. Particularly wed 1 documented in this collection is the nation-wide GM strike of the winter of 1945-46. Boxes 8-12 Correspondence. Arranged chronologically and covers the period 1937-1961. Among the corres pondents are: Former Assistant Attorney General of the U.S. Thurman Arnold; former Cal ifornia Senators Sheridan Downey, Hiram Johnson and 14illiam Knowland; Homer Martin; George Addes; \darter Reuther; and R.J. Thomas of the UAI4. Boxes 13-20 Grievances. Box 13: Contains miscellaneous grievance material arranged alphabetically by subject. Including: Appeal Committee minutes, management dispositions, statements and umpires' decisions. Boxes 14-18: Contain unsettled and appealed grievances. These are arranged chronologically and cover the periods 1940-1943 and 1945-1950. Boxes 19-20: Consist of grIevance report slips arranged chronologically for the period 1937-1958 Boxes 21-28 Minutes.
