It demonstrates the enduring legacies of the Cold War in these neighbouring countries where the war overlapped directly with experiences of colonization and decolonization. I show how and why anti- communism in both countries became a core foundation of both Malaysian and Indonesian nationalism and related religious identification and how this largely explains successive govern- ments’ attempts to memorialize and defend these repressions. I argue that recent attempts by both survivors of the repression and younger Indonesians and Malaysians to reexamine the history of the political left or experiences of repression constitute important efforts to rethink the post- colonial predicaments of both countries in different ways. • The Forgotten Women Warriors of the Malayan Communist Party
THEME W o m e n W a r r i o r s Mention communists, guerillas, freedom fighters, militants and ideologues and the images that leap to mind are invariably male. In Asia, it is no different, except there is an added bias of patriarchy and of a history that has, until recently, been constructed and then recounted by former colonial powers and their historians. After independence, new ‘autonomous’ national histories had to be created and national curricula constructed, with those not fitting into these narratives either omitted or marginalised. Adrianna Tan examines the case of the women warriors of the Malayan Communist Party. Like the previous work, this thesis examines the forgotten and alternative histories of present day Malaysia and Singapore during the tumultuous 1950s and 1960s. I owe this original intellectual debt to Dr. Harper. I am grateful to the National University of Singapore (NUS) History Department for offering me the Masters Research Scholarship (2005-2007). Together with the research and conference grants given by the Faculty of Arts and Social Science, I was given the opportunity to travel widely to collect primary sources and share my scholarship with other scholars during my two-year candidature. Few other academic institutions are prepared to support the research of M.A. candidates to this extent. My teachers at the NUS History Department have contributed to the completion of this thesis in various ways. My deepest gratitude goes to my supervisor, A/P Albert Lau. His well-measured patience allowed me to complete my slow- yielding oral history research plan and his timely reminders and encouragements prodded me to finish this thesis on time. I also need to mention A/P Brian Farrell’s constant presence throughout my candidature as teacher (for my coursework), graduate studies coordinator (approving my research plans and holiday leaves).

  • In Search of Environmental Justice in Malaysia: the Cases of Broga and Bukit Merah
IN SEARCH OF ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE IN MALAYSIA: THE CASES OF BROGA AND BUKIT MERAH Li Kheng Poh A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Brighton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 2015 University of Brighton ABSTRACT The thesis examines two environmental campaigns in Malaysia in order to consider their significance in relation to conceptualising ideas of environmental justice and citizenship. The first campaign, the Broga anti-incinerator campaign is compared and contrasted to the second campaign, the Bukit Merah anti-radioactive waste campaign. Using a qualitative approach, the thesis examines how campaigners made use of a wide range of international environmental justice concepts and discourses, and campaigning strategies. These were locally adapted to fit the Malaysian political and social context, so that campaigners could demand their rights and challenge the responsibilities of the state and business interests. Campaigners made their demands for accountability not only through the law courts, but also through using discourses and strategies of environmentalism, rights to information and participation, citizen science, and lobbying internationally via transnational advocacy networks. Collectively, these actions brought both internal and external pressures to bear on the state and business interests, and created new spaces for dissent and for the construction of rights and entitlements. While actual material gains were not substantial, there were gradual incremental changes in feelings of personal empowerment and political consciousness, and in institutional health and safety processes. From this, I argue that conceptual links should be made between ideas of environmental justice and environmental citizenship. Concepts of environmental citizenship help to strengthen arguments for environmental justice, and vice versa.

The Spectral Nanyang: Recollection, Nation, And The Genealogy Of Chineseness Abstract Decolonizing counter-narratives to Malaysia's official national history are insufficiento t account for the complex legacies of nationalism in Malaysia, and its relationship with Chineseness, race, and colonialism. This dissertation close reads the fictional works of three contemporary Mahua (Malaysian Chinese) authors – Zhang Guixing, Ng Kim Chew and Li Tianbao – to argue that Mahua identity is haunted by a nationalistic Chineseness deriving from late 19th and early 20th century mainland China, which defines itself on the basis of an archaic, civilizational imaginary, with undertones of racial and cultural purity. This conditions Mahua political and cultural identity during flashpoints of Malaysian history across Malaya (now Peninsular Malaysia) and Borneo (now partially East Malaysia), spanning anti-colonial Hua- dominated communist movements during the Cold War, such as the Sarawak Communist Insurgency (1962-1990) and the Malayan Communist Party during the Malayan Emergencies (1948-1960 and 1968-1989); and Hua literati responses to a post-1969 renewal of the politics of Malay indigeneity.

Wan Aida Wan Yahaya Questioning the Myths of Origin: Amir Muhammad's Historical Film about the Communist Party of Malaya and Malaysian Independence1 Malaysian independent filmmaker Amir Muhammad has become known internationally for his witty and satirical documentaries on Malaysia and Malaysian society. One of Amir's latest works, Lelaki Komunis Terakhir ('The Last Communist', 2006), was well received internationally. However, the film has been banned in Malaysia. This documentary recounts the life of exiled Communist Party of Malaya leader, Chin Peng, now living in exile in Southern Thailand. The film was inspired by Chin Peng's autobiography, 'Alias Chin Peng: my side of history' (2003). In his film Amir juxtaposes Chin Peng's life (past and present) against scenes of modern day Malaysia, simultaneously exploring issues of social development and progress, and notions of loyalty to the state and to a cause. The paper has a number of aims. Firstly it examines the circumstances of the banning of the film and the reasons or justifications given for the ban. Secondly it highlights and explores a main contention put forward by the filmmaker, the need to re examine the role of the much maligned Communist Party of Malaya in the Malaysian independence movement in the period leading to independence from the British, and particularly the function and contribution of Chin Peng in this period, an aspect of Malaysian history that has been suppressed since independence in 1957.

Vol 1 No 1 (2020) E-ISSN: 2716-6333 International Journal of Creative Multimedia Joshua Oppenheimer’s Look of Silence: A Cinematic Look at the Banality of Evil Hassan Abd. Muthalib [email protected] Abstract Questions have been raised by many filmmakers over the years as to whether the 1965 coup in Indonesia was the handiwork of the Indonesian Communist Party. American/British documentary filmmaker, Joshua Oppenheimer, who has previously made The Act of Killing on the same subject, poses the question again with a new documentary. But this time, he takes a cinematic approach by fully utilising the language of film to create a solemn and meditative work. He focuses on the faces and the silence of the individuals involved, in an effort to probe their minds. The individuals are some of the surviving killers as well as the brother and family of one of those who were killed. Oppenheimer also places emphasis on landscape as character. In the area of the killings, the landscape stands as a silent witness to the horrors perpetrated there. The demonisation of the communists continues till today in Indonesia, as it does in Malaysia as well as Singapore. The millennium saw revisionist histories surfacing that explored the blatant demonisation and vilification of communists. Films with a creative approach began to be made by young people who explored what had transpired, in an effort to foreground the truth.
