Please accept my congratulations on your excellent performance at interview: I shall look forward to your joining the college in October '98. You may have a number of questions about how to prepare for coming up. You will be sent information about domestic matters in due course. Likewise, you will be contacted separately about hepatitis immunisation (contact me if you don't hear from the University Medical Officer shortly). To turn to academic matters, the most important task ahead is of course your A-levels, and I should like to wish you every success with them. We feel confident that you are capable of the conditions we are setting. There is no special reading that is required before you start here, but I can suggest some books you might like to dip into. I would advise that you try and borrow them from a library. It is better to leave the buying of books until you start your course here and so get to know which you find most useful. You might like to try:- Essentials of Physiology by J.F. Lamb, C.G. Ingram & others; publ. Blackwell: 2nd Edn 1984. Nerve and Muscle by R.D. Keynes & D.J. Aidley; publ. C.U.P. 1981. Molecular Biology of the Cell by B. Alberts & others; publ. Garland: 3rd Edn 1994. Biochemistry by L. Stryer; publ. W.H. Freeman, New York: 4th Edn 1995. Let me emphasize that this is optional work, some of which you'll have time for and which I hope you'll enjoy. If you have any questions about academic matters or more general questions about the College, do not hesitate to write direct to me. And, should you be visiting Oxford, please 'phone me in advance: I should be pleased to see you and show you more of the College or laboratories. With best wishes for a Happy Christmas, Yours ever, *M !*t(iv(<fck Dr S.J. Goss Fellow & Tutor in Medicine. .
