He was a charming man with a smiley personality and he was a great friend of Harrogate Rugby club. He first came to Harrogate RUFC as a spectator, with his Dad, in 1977 and played for several of the Harrogate teams including the Georgians and the Strays. Dom also played alongside All Black John Gallagher with Rob Howley and Peter Winterbottom in a John Inverdale select XV to raise money for charity. He worked for the BBC in television and radio for over 30 years presenting sports programmes and also as a news reader presenting over 5000 programmes for the BBC but still found time to spend Saturdays at Claro Road and Rudding Lane. Dom’s broadcasting career began back in 1988 at BBC Radio York along with Richard Hammond who went on to present Top Gear. Dom commented, ‘I used to answer the phones when I worked for the BBC and then one day the Non League football guy was ill and I was asked to cover for him. My first broadcasts sounded just terrible but I have enjoyed my work ever since.’ Most of his working life was in broadcasting but he has also been a wine bar manager, a PE teacher and a room service waiter. As a schoolboy he ran competitively at international level for Scotland over 800 and 1500 metres. In 2014 Dom took charge of the microphone for Harrogate Rugby Club’s Party in the Park Farewell to Claro Road. From 2017 he was the club’s master of ceremonies for our annual dinners. We send our deepest condolences to his family and thank St. Michael’s Hospice for his end of life care. Roy Guy - Memories of Sean Kelly and Dominic Busby I was very sad to read of the death of Sean Kelly and Dominic Busby. Both were great Harrogate supporters in different ways. I was lucky enough to be President of Harrogate when we made the first trips to Glasgow for the matches sponsored by Sean and was permitted to refer to our hosts as GHA rather than use their rather grand but lengthy official name Glasgow Hutchesons Aloysians Rugby Football Club. In welcoming various groups in an after lunch speech I am sure I was the first to use the phrase, "Hampsthwaite mafia" and it was soon adopted as a very appropriate title for the group led by Sean and Norman Hesp. Dominic was very proud of his association with Harrogate Rugby Club. When he was working with local BBC Radio in London he interviewed David Page, First XV Manager of Esher, every Friday evening to discuss the next match. Harrogate were in National League One with Esher and, although the broadcast conversation was about Esher, Dominic always managed to refer to Harrogate and our match on the coming Saturday. Following the murder of the schoolgirl, Milly Dowler, a charity match was arranged at Esher and Dominic was invited to play. He rang me and asked if I could send him a pair of Harrogate rugby socks as he wanted to wear them in the game. Sizzy provided them and I posted them off to Dominic who wore them playing alongside some illustrious team mates. 2 of 5 End Of Season Success Matthew Grant posted the following on the club website: The beginning of June 2021 provided fantastic weather for the Mini and Junior Season Finale. With age groups represented from U5 to the Colts there were over 350 players on site throughout the day, enjoying the glorious weather. Exhibition matches involving Boys U12 v Otley, U14 v Hull Ionians, Girls U13/15 v Ripon and the final matches of their junior careers for the Colts against Wetherby and Wharfedale rounded off a wonderful day of community rugby. Thanks also to the U6/U14 and Colts parents who volunteered to help run the day, organising the car parking, BBQ and bar in line with all the Covid guidelines. Next Event: July 24th British Lions on Cinema screen and touch rugby festival.
