Verstanden als kreative Schöp- fung unter Rückgriff auf bestehende Ideen und Werke, ist Remix die Kultur- technik des digitalen Zeitalters schlechthin. In den verschiedensten Berei- chen versuchen Initiativen, die Chancen digitaler Technologien für kreative Rekombination zu nutzen, indem sie den Zugang zu vorhandenen Inhalten erleichtern. Immer mehr Menschen wirken mittels „sozialer Software“ zu- sammen und erstellen gemeinsam Güter wie die freie Online-Enzyklopädie Wikipedia oder beteiligen sich über Blogs an zivilgesellschaftlichem Dis- kurs. An Universitäten und Schulen machen Lehrende auf der ganzen Welt ihre Lehr- und Lernunterlagen als „Open Educational Resources“ frei on- line zugänglich. Creative Commons wiederum bietet Kunst- und Kultur- schaffenden aller Bereiche einfache Lizenzwerkzeuge, mit denen sie die di- gitale Verbreitung und Weiterverwendung ihrer Werke fördern können. So steht auch dieser Band unter einer Creative-Commons-Lizenz, die kosten- lose Verbreitung ebenso wie Erweiterung, Überarbeitung und Verbesserung zulässt – solange die abgeleiteten Werke ebenfalls wieder frei im Internet zugänglich gemacht werden. Die Einladung zum Remix gilt aber insbesondere für die insgesamt 24 Pro- jektvorschläge zur Umsetzung auf kommunaler Ebene, die am Ende der einzelnen Kapitel skizziert werden. Denn nirgendwo sonst gilt der Spruch „global denken, lokal handeln“ mehr, als wenn es um die Potentiale von und Gefahren für die neuen digitalen Freiheiten des Internets geht. Das beginnt bei Grundvoraussetzungen wie dem möglichst freien und gleich- berechtigten Zugang zum Internet und hört bei transparenter Verwaltung („Open Government“) noch lange nicht auf. Die Projektvorschläge sind we- niger Patentrezepte als vielmehr Ideen, die zum Adaptieren, Ausprobieren und Weiterdenken einladen sollen. Dieses Buch ist selbst ein Remix. Ungefähr die Hälfte der Texte basieren auf Kapiteln des 2007 erschienen

Analytical instruments equipped with automated samplers yield large amounts of measurement data, which needs to be verified and analyzed. Since nearly every GC/MS instrument vendor offers its own data format and software tools, the consequences are problems with data exchange and a lack of comparability between the analytical results. To challenge this situation a number of either commercial or non-profit software applications have been developed. These applications provide functionalities to import and analyze several data formats but have shortcomings in terms of the transparency of the implemented analytical algorithms and/or are restricted to a specific computer platform. Results: This work describes a native approach to handle chromatographic data files. The approach can be extended in its functionality such as facilities to detect baselines, to detect, integrate and identify peaks and to compare mass spectra, as well as the ability to internationalize the application. Additionally, filters can be applied on the chromatographic data to enhance its quality, for example to remove background and noise. Extended operations like do, undo and redo are supported. Conclusions: OpenChrom is a software application to edit and analyze mass spectrometric chromatographic data. It is extensible in many different ways, depending on the demands of the users or the analytical procedures and algorithms. It offers a customizable graphical user interface.

    Debian - The Universal Operating System? Do we provide what users need? Do users get what they really want? Andreas Tille 22. June 2007 Abstract Debian GNU/Linux is a Linux distribution that is heavily used as a base for several derivatives - there is no other distribution that has such a large number of derived distributions. This is one reason to make us proud because we are considered solid and rock stable. But the question remains: Why do these people not use plain Debian instead of building their own distribution? Debian wants to be “The Universal Operating System” - at least the title of the homepage says so. What means universal? One of WordNet answers is “adapted to various purposes, sizes, forms, operations”. If we agree to this definition we have to experience: Debian is not really adapted to various purposes but it is perfectly adaptable. It is not really bad if Debian is adaptable to various purposes and the fact that Debian and even its derivatives are used as a base for adaptations makes us proud. It is a good sign that Debian is an unspecialised base system which is not really modified for a particular purpose or function which makes it attractive for adaptation to any purpose because it is known to be very robust and stable. So in short: We do a quite good job but it does not really qualify for the attribute “universal”. The first question is: Do we really want to be universal? If we answer this with yes, the next question is: Can we as a group of more or less independent maintainers afford this? My answer to this question is yes and the method to do this are Custom Debian Distributions.
