    Shakespeare in Gujarati: A Translation History SUNIL SAGAR Abstract Translation history has emerged as one of the most significant enterprises within Translation Studies. Translation history in Gujarati per se is more or less an uncharted terrain. Exploring translation history pertaining to landmark authors such as Shakespeare and translation of his works into Gujarati could open up new vistas of research. It could also throw new light on the cultural and historical context and provide new insights. The paper proposes to investigate different aspects of translation history pertaining to Shakespeare’s plays into Gujarati spanning nearly 150 years. Keywords: Translation History, Methodology, Patronage, Poetics. Introduction As Anthony Pym rightly (1998: 01) said that the history of translation is “an important intercultural activity about which there is still much to learn”. This is why history of translation has emerged as one of the key areas of research all over the world. India has also taken cognizance of this and initiated efforts in this direction. Reputed organizations such as Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS) and Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) have initiated discussion and discourse on this area with their various initiatives. Translation history has been explored for some time now and it’s not a new area per se. However, there has been a paradigm shift in the way translation history is approached in the recent times. Jains trace their history through a succession of 24 victorious saviours and teachers known as tirthankaras, with the first being Rishabhanatha, who according to Jain tradition lived millions of years ago, twenty-third being Parshvanatha in 8th century BC and twenty-fourth being the Mahāvīra around 500 BCE. Jains believe that Jainism is an eternal dharma with the tirthankaras guiding every cycle of the Jain cosmology. The main religious premises of Jainism are ahiṃsā (non-violence), anekāntavāda (many-sidedness), aparigraha (non-attachment) and asceticism. Devout Jains take five main vows: ahiṃsā (non-violence), satya (truth), asteya (not stealing), brahmacharya (celibacy or chastity), and aparigraha (non-attachment). These principles have impacted Jain culture in many ways, such as leading to a predominantly vegetarian lifestyle that avoids harm to animals and their life cycles. Parasparopagraho Jīvānām (the function of souls is to help one another) is the motto of Jainism. Ṇamōkāra mantra is the most common and basic prayer in Jainism. The origins of Jainism are obscure. The Jains claim their religion to be eternal, and consider Rishabhanatha to be the founder in the present time cycle, the first of 24 Jain tirthankaras in Jain belief, and someone who lived for 8,400,000 purva years.

It was difficult to doubt their power. But their day is done and their courts `the lion and the lizard keep’. We have seen the phenmimenal advancement of science in our own day. As we gaze at the incredible rapidity of scientific progress we are losing touch with the spiritual side of man. We are on cross- roads of life, between two worlds; `one dead and the powerless to be born’. We see everywhere social and political chaos. There is distrust and frustration, and for a decade or more we have lived on the brink of another world war more disastrous than the earlier too, which would mean total destruction of human race. Whether it would mean pralaya we do not know. But when it comes we can only see the broken bits of civilization, if we are to survive this catastrophe. And all this is due to a wrong approach to the understanding of the problems of life and experience. A new kind of a materialism is being emphasised today wherin we pay exclusice attention to material comforts and ignore the higher values. But to understand life and nature we have to transcend the narrow partial points of view and adopt a synoptic view of life. We have to realize that others’ points of view have also to be considered and respected. Dogmatic approach of looking at the problems leads to intolerance and then to violence.
