he Gabriele D’Annunzio Lodge 321 was instituted on March 28, 1915. Originally, there were three Sons of Italy Lodges in Schenectady: Gabriele TD’Annunzio, Oltre Oceano, and Pieta D’Amore. Later, the three Lodges merged and incorporated as the Gabriele D’Annunzio Lodge 321. During its early years, Lodge meetings were held in several locations in the city of Schenectady. On August 6,7,8,9, 1925 Lodge 321 hosted the New York State Grand Lodge Convention at the Van Curler Hotel in Schenectady. The hotel today is the Schenectady County Community College. In 1948, the Lodge rented a two story building on Liberty Street which they later purchased. The Lodge operated out of the Liberty Street building for 54 years, until 2006 when the building was sold and a new building was purchased at the current location in the town of Rotterdam, a suburb of Schenectady. Like many other lodges throughout the nation, Lodge 321 had its ups and downs. At one point before the 1950s, it boasted a membership of 500. In the mid-1950s, the membership dropped to a mere 40 members. In the late 1950s and 1960s Lodge membership again increased significantly. duced three New York State Grand Lodge Lodge 321 has pro For its centennial celebration the Gabriele D’Annunzio Lodge honored the cur - Venerables/Presidents. At the 1970 New York Grand Lodge Convention, Brother Joseph Bologna was elected State President (Grand Venerable). Again, at the New York Grand Lodge Convention of 1989 Brother Joseph Parillo Jr. was elected Grand Lodge President, the third member of Lodge 321 to hold the office of State President. In 1987, the Lodge membership elected its first woman president Frances Suraci White. She served two terms. From 1960 to 2000 the membership of Lodge 321 fluctuated between 320 and 420. After 2000, due to the Lodge’s difficult location in the city of Schenectady, membership started to decline again and reached 170 by 2006. At this time, the members decided to sell the building and move to a new location. After a search, a building was purchased in the suburbs of the city in the town of Rotterdam. Once established at the new location, the Lodge began to offer many new activities. Members would come to Lodge functions and bring their friends who enjoyed what we were doing and who would subsequently join the Lodge. Within a few years, the membership rose dramatically and by 2012 the Lodge’s membership passed the 500 plateau, a target set by then President Louis Fazzone. Lodge 321 is very active and involved in the community. In 2011, when Hurricane Irene destroyed the town of Rotterdam Junction in the county of Schenectady, thou- sands of volunteers came in to help clean up and rebuild, but there were no services or facilities where the workers could clean-up or eat except for a nearby fire station where food was brought in. 14 • The Golden Lion • November-December 2015 October - Italian Heritage and Culture Month The Wonderous Journey by Ciro De Rosa ach king in his own time experienced a dream that an angel bade him to follow a star in the heavens that would lead him to worship the Savior of the World. EAs did his companions, the king mounted for his journey with his retinue with eyes upon the star-studded vault of the eastern sky, but with only one that hovered over the land and moved ever onward toward a great inspirational moment. The kings were from the priestly caste of ancient Persia, and as the days passed, they met on the trail and each told of the dream and its implications that a most won - drous event was to take place in the near future and the shining star would lead them to their destination.

Each brought gifts to present to the Savior as they knelt before Him in awe and wonder. Gaspar, robed in silken finery, beheld the child swaddled in a coarse woolen shift in His mother’s arms and laid the cup of gold before Him to symbolize the babe’s Kingship over the world. Balthasar, the eldest, with a white beard flow - ing over his striped kaftan, brought a flagon of frankincense to proclaim the priestly roll given to Him by His Father in heaven. Finally Melchior, the wise king, placed a vial of Myrrh, anointing oil, before the child that would prefigure the babe’s death on the cross thirty three years later. These gifts symbolized the kingship of the infant born in a cave in Bethlehem two thousand years ago. And the world has never been the same.

Today, the Epiphany, the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles, reminds us of the Loggia Glen Cove No. 1016 sponsored a lecture by Dr. Salvatore Primeggia on the great gift given to humankind by God, who gave His only son to redeem our sins. Starlit Night

On Christmas Eve, the east star bright, I gaze into this Holy Night, a silent prayer to twinkling stars watching over me. At midnight, a spirit appears to take me on a ‘Christmas Carol’ journey.

It begins in a faraway region unfamiliar to me, where a family gathers around the table, passing a tray of cagionetti while pipers descend from the mountains playing ‘Tu scendi dalle stelle.’

The spirit then takes me on a steamship Placing a commemorative wreath at the statue of Christopher Columbus at the Broome County Courthouse in Binghamton are, left to right: Binghamton Lodge to a land foreign to that Chieti family, #487 President Mark Dozoretz and Duca Degli Abruzzi Lodge #443 President to a suburban home where I see me Pat Cerra. leave cookies and a bottle of coke, listening to ‘Silent Night’ on a transistor radio.

The spirit travels eastward, where my children listen for the echo of Ho-Ho-Ho, leave a capocollo sandwich and vino rosso, folly to my singing ‘Let it Snow, Let it Snow.’

Then heads south to New Jersey, their children no longer believe in Santa, decorate the tree with a string popcorn garland of love, singing ‘Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.’

The spirit leaves me to imagine, some years afar, when I become a twinkling star, for new eyes skywatching this Holy Night, awaiting fresh fallen snow and the arrival of Christ the Child.

Place and date: Battle of Chosin Reservoir, Korea., November 28, 1950. Entered Service: Dover, New Jersey. . Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a Rifleman with Company F, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 28 November 1950. When all the other members of his fire team became casualties, creating a gap in the lines, during the initial phase of a vicious attack launched by a fanatical enemy of regimental strength against his company's hill position, Private Cafferata waged a lone battle with grenades and rifle fire as the attack gained momentum and the enemy threatened penetration through the gap and endangered the integrity of the entire defensive perimeter. Courageously ignoring the intense pain, he staunchly fought on until he was struck by a sniper's bullet and forced to submit to evacuation for medical treatment. Stouthearted and indomitable, Private Cafferata, by his fortitude, great personal valor and dauntless perseverance in the face of almost certain death, saved the lives of several of his fellow Marines and contributed essentially to the success achieved by his company in maintaining its defensive position against tremendous odds. His extraordinary heroism throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. Hector Cafferata was born November 4, 1929, in NYC to Mr. and Mrs. Hector A. Cafferata, Sr. of Montville, NJ. He attended elementary school at Parsippany-Troy Hills, NJ and high school at Boonton, NJ. Starting as a sophomore in high school, he played football for three years, and following graduation, he continued as a semi-pro. In 1948, Cafferata enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve. At six feet two inches, 220 pounds, and a former semipro football player, Hector was a big, strong Marine. He also was an excellent marksman, having been a hunter since he was twelve years old. His unit was called to active duty on September 6, 1950. After training at Camp Pendle- ton, California, PFC Cafferata embarked for Korea in October 1950, joining the 2nd Battalion 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. As darkness fell and the temperature plummeted below zero, at about 1:30 a.m., the Chinese began a sudden massive assault. Over the next seven hours, Cafferata never stopped shooting. He moved along a ditch shooting at the Chi- nese as they came up over its lip and batting away enemy grenades with his entrenching tool. During the battle, a grenade fell near Cafferata, he tried to throw it away, but it exploded as soon as it left his hand and blew the flesh off his frozen fingers. Isolated and alone, except for a blinded comrade, he fought until dawn, when some Marines finally made their way to the ditch. Shortly thereafter, he was hit in the arm and chest. He was evacuated and hospitalized for 18 months. Later he learned that American of- ficers had counted approximately 100 Chinese dead around the ditch that he held. In 1952, back home in New Jersey, Cafferata was informed by telegram that he had been awarded the Medal of Honor. It was presented to him on November 24, 1952, by President Truman at a White House Ceremony. Cafferata is the 1st known Italian American to receive the Medal of Honor for action in Korea. In addition to the Medal of Honor, Cafferata's other medals include: ; Navy Presidential Unit Citation w/1 ; National Defense Service Medal; Korean Service Medal w/1 service star; Korean Presidential Unit Citation; and the United Nations Korea Medal Cafferata has been recognized for his civic and military duties with the following honors - The Hector A.
