What is a color wheel? Introducing Color: When light hits objects, some of the wavelengths are absorbed and some are reflected, depending on the materials in the object. The reflected wavelengths are what we perceive as the object's color. Visible light is made of seven wavelength groups. Rods: record brightness and darkness (value). Cones: Each one optimized to absorb a different spectrum range of visible light. (1) One set absorbs long, low-frequency wavelengths, the reds. (2) Another absorbs mid-size wavelengths, the greens. (3) The third absorbs short, high-frequency wavelengths, the blues. When overlaid or "added together", they produce the secondary colors of light: yellow, cyan and magenta as in the diagram. Your digital devices all rely on RGB light to produce all the colors your see on screen. Red and green light together are perceived as yellow. Blue and green light together are perceived as cyan. Blue and red light together are perceived as magenta. All the other perceived colors can be produced by blending specific amounts of red, green and blue light. White light can be produced by mixing a color light and its opposite or equal amounts of red, green and blue light. Each color of pigment absorbs its opposite (complementary color) and the rest is reflected back at us as color. This is called "Subtraction." Magenta pigment absorbs green light and reflects red and blue light, which we see as magenta. Yellow pigment absorbs blue light and reflects red and green light, which we see as yellow. Cyan pigment absorbs red light and reflects green and blue light, which we see as cyan. The color of the light that is not "subtracted" and reaches our eyes determines what color we see. Light on a black object subtracts all colors and no light is reflected. Light on a white object does not subtract colors and reflects all the colors. It is a tool used to help us understand color relationships and is traditional in the field of art and design. Sir Isaac Newton developed the first circular diagram of colors in 1666. Create colors from primary colors Cyan, Magenta, Yellow (Example: Magenta + Yellow = Red) and then secondary colors from Red, Yellow, Blue (Example: Red + Yellow = Orange) . Do NOT use pre-mixed paint hues. Try to create all colors from Cyan, Magenta, Yellow. Once you have successfully experimented with the triad relationships (primary and secondary) from both systems, think about how the colors relate to each other. Think about what each color might represent: mood, emotion, object. Experiment with mixing each triad together, what color is produced? Create a numbering or labeling system to identify the different color systems. Make sure your final color wheel composition is laid out with a clear connection to the original primaries and secondaries. Language Arts Camouflaging Colors Name Being camouflaged is a good way to stay safe. Many animals can change their colors, or camouflage themselves, to blend in with their surroundings. Chameleons and frogs are good examples of animals that are hard to find in their habitats. Think about where Carl Chameleon might live. Add in his surroundings, and then use your crayons to camouflage him in his environment. What color would he be? Think about how you would camouflage yourself in your bedroom.     Understanding The Color Wheel What is a color wheel? A color wheel is a painting tool artists use to help understand the relationships between individual colors and how to best use them. By name, each color is as follows: red, red-purple, purple, blue-purple, blue, blue-green, green, yellow-green, yellow, yellow-orange, orange, and orange red. Sometimes, colors have more common names like “turquoise” for blue-green, and “magenta” for red-purple. Primary Colors Primary colors are the building blocks that make all the other colors on the wheel. Here on our color diagram we can see the 3 primary colors. We know them as red, yellow, and blue. Fun fact:Did you know that you can create ANY color you need from mixing red, yellow, or blue paint? The primary colors on the color wheel are the most powerful colors. Yellow is the brightest color on the wheel while red and blue have been known as “power colors”. That’s why fast-food restaurants like McDonald’s use red and yellow in its logo - so you can see it from far away! Secondary Colors A secondary color is a combination of 2 primary colors. There are 3 secondary colors on our wheel - green, orange and purple. Here is a summary of how to create the secondary colors: Tertiary Colors Tertiary colors are the last addition to our wheel. There are two major categories under the heading of color, they are: 1. Neutrals 2. Knowing and understanding color theory — the way painters, designers, and artists of all trades do — a photographer can utilize color to their benefit. Order of colors This may cause some flashbacks to elementary school art class, but let’s start at the beginning: The orders of colors. There are three orders: Primary, Secondary, and ​ Tertiary colors. The primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. That is to say, they are the three pure colors from which all other colors are derived. If we take two primary colors and add combine them equally, we get a secondary color. Finally, a tertiary color is one which is a combination of a primary and secondary color. Primary Colors: Red, yellow, and blue are what we call “pure colors.” They are not ​ created by the combining of other colors. Secondary Colors: A 50/50 combination of any two primary colors. Example: Red + ​ Yellow = Orange. Tertiary Colors: A 25/75 or 75/25 combination of a primary color and secondary color. ​ Example: Blue + Green = Turquoise. Now, how do the orders of colors help a photographer? Well, by knowing the three orders, we can make decisions about which colors we want to show in frame. We plan for its use in our homes and workplaces. Planning colors for our living environment begins with an understanding of color. What is color? How does it affect us? The answer depends on whether you are viewing color through the eyes of a psychologist, physicist, chemist or a designer. What Is Color? The sensation of color does not exist without light. Sunlight is composed of colors of the spectrum. White light, such as sunlight, is a mixture of all colors as seen through a prism. Light is a “wave motion” or form of energy. Colors have different wavelengths that are longer for the red end of the color spectrum and shorter at the violet end. Each color has a different energy. When light strikes an object, the particles of energy may be reflected or absorbed. The eye sees the color of an object by the light reflected. If light falls on an object that absorbs cool colors, such as green, the object will reflect the complement or warm colors, such as red. Black absorbs and white reflects nearly all the light waves.     Color mixing is a complicated topic, especially in weaving. In this course, I'm going to focus on giving you some basic concepts of color mixing and then give you tools to experiment with it on your own. A brief recap of color mixing from the hues section. Primary colors are pure colors. They cannot be created by mixing other colors together. The primary colors for weaving are yellow, magenta, and cyan, also known as turquoise. Mixing two primary colors in equal proportions gives you a secondary color. The secondary colors are orange, green, and purple, and they fall between your primary colors on the color wheel. Here's how this works in weaving. These two yarns, magenta and yellow, are primary colors. They weave into an orange plain weave fabric. Mixing a primary and secondary color gives you a tertiary color. There are six tertiary colors, and they fall between the primary and secondary colors on the color wheel. Here's how this plays out in weaving. A green yarn and a yellow yarn blend to make a yellow-green plain weave fabric. Mixing two primary colors produces an equally bright color somewhere between those two colors on the color wheel. In theory, mixing all three primaries in equal amounts should produce gray. It's not usually that neat, but in general, adding a third primary to the mix does dull the color, introducing some gray. So if you want to keep your colors bright, mix only colors that fall between two primaries on the color wheel. Another way of looking at it is that colors that fall between two primaries will mix into equally bright colors.

The elements consist of line, shape / form, color, value, texture, and space. Elements are marked with an asterisk*. *Line- A mark made by the point of a drawing tool. *Shape- An enclosed space determined by a line, color or texture. *Form- A shape that is three-dimensional (height, width and depth) and encloses volume. *Color- The effect produced when rays of light are reflected from an object. White is when all the rays are reflected and black is when all the rays are absorbed. *Value- The lightness or darkness of a color or an object. *Texture- The way something feels or "looks" like it would feel. Pattern- Repeated lines, shapes, colors, or forms in a work of art. *Space-The feeling of depth. It refers to the distance or area between, around, above, below, or within things. Principles of Design- The methods or techniques that artists use to design artworks by controlling the elements of design. The components are balance, emphasis, unity, variety, movement, rhythm and contrast. Principles are marked with two asterisk**. **Balance- The arrangement of visual elements to create stability in artwork. There are three kinds of balances: symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial. **Emphasis- Combining elements to stress the differences between those elements and to create one or more centers of interest in a work. **Unity - The successful combination of the elements that creates a sense of wholeness in an artwork. **Variety- The inclusion of differences in the elements of a composition to offset unity and make the work more interesting.

    UAMN Virtual Early Explorers: Colors Create a Color Wheel Explore how to mix colors by making a play dough color wheel! Materials Needed: Red, yellow, and blue play dough.* Optional: Color wheel printable. *To make your own play dough, try this recipe: www.thebestideasforkids.com/playdough-recipe/ Instructions: Step 1: Roll a ball from each of the primary colors (red, yellow, and blue). If using the color wheel template, place each ball on its matching color. It is okay if the colors of the play dough and color wheel aren’t a perfect match. There are many different shades of each color! Step 2: Mix secondary colors (orange, green, and violet). Roll pieces of red and yellow dough together until the two colors become orange. Do the same for yellow and blue to make green, and blue and red to make violet. Set each secondary color on your color wheel. Step 3: To make tertiary colors, mix a primary color with a secondary color. For example: red + orange = red-orange yellow + green = yellow-green blue + violet = blue-violet Fill in the rest of the color wheel with tertiary colors. Follow your child(ren)’s lead.
