Their significance dilates not only because well organised misfeasance bars them from justice, but also because of sociological and psychological aspects involving far-reaching consequences. In this respect, the extensive destruction brought about by the Armenian Genocide and the substantive occupation of Armenia’s landmass by its astonishingly hostile enemies will remain a multifarious international subject impregnated with significant longevity. Undoubtedly, the intensity of the issue in motion will gather momentum until a categorically justifiable settlement is attained. A broad reconstruction programme appears to be the most reasonable way forward. PREAMBLE 1st. PRELUDE TO GENOCIDE Encompasses the periods referred to as the Armenian Massacres; mainly covering the years 1894 - 96 and Adana 1909. Some titles in the bibliography record the earlier international treaties that failed to protect the Armenians. Only a small number of works have been included, predominantly relevant to this period. -

A Brief History of the Ottoman Greek Genocide (1914-1923) Asia Minor, also called Anatolia (from the Greek for “sunrise”), is a geographic Contemporary Eyewitness Accounts and historical term for the westernmost part of Asia. About the Canadian Hellenic Congress and the Bibliography PREFACE Dear Reader, The Canadian Hellenic Congress has produced this booklet for the purpose of creating awareness among our fellow Canadians and to contribute to the discussion of the need to recognize and acknowledge the first genocide of the 20th Century. Many of the materials used in this booklet are in the public domain and have been written by individuals who want justice to be served for all the victims of genocides. The Hellenic Genocide, part of which is known as the Greek Pontian Genocide, is the forgotten and untold story of the genocide of Hellenic peoples. By decree of the government of the Ottoman Empire (today’s Turkey), Hellenes were deliberately and systematically removed from their ancient homelands of Asia Minor, Anatolia and Pontus. Many fled the acts of terrorism; the labor battalions; the rapes; murders; hangings and fires. Others were driven from their homes in forced marches. Experts state that 1.7 million men, women and children were affected. Our hope is that governments, including our Canadian governments, legislatively recognize and acknowledge this genocide as a crime against humanity. We hope that our brethren, who perished, get justice and further that this heinous crime against humanity is never again permitted to take place against any peoples. -

Reviewed by Matthias Bjørnlund, Danish Institute for Study Abroad The Context Genocide studies—in short, analyzing one or more cases of organized mass destruc- tion—is by now a somewhat established academic discipline. While it is still young, it is, after ‘‘having remained marginal to academic discourse’’ for decades, no longer a mere toddler in the field of humanities and social sciences thanks to a host of factors, from individual achievements to geopolitical shifts.1 Genocide, of course, is not young, not even as a concept. For instance, long before Nazi atrocities were famously dubbed ‘‘a crime without a name’’ by Winston Churchill in 1941, neologisms exactly similar to Raphael Lemkin’s 1943/44 invention of the Greek-Latin hybrid word ‘‘genocide,’’ (ge´nos +-cide, i.e., the murder of a people/nation/race/tribe) were used by Scandinavian and German politicians, diplomats, reporters, and intellectuals from 1915, alongside ‘‘crimes against humanity,’’ ‘‘extermination,’’ and ‘‘race murder’’ to define or encapsulate the ongoing destruction of the Ottoman Armenians and Greeks. These neologisms were, for instance, folkemord, folkmord, and Vo¨lkermord, all combining the words ‘‘people’’ and ‘‘murder.’’ Both before and after that, the Greek genoktonia, the Armenian tseghas- panutiun, and several similar words synonymous with genocide were used -

WE ARE ENCOUARGING EACH AND EVERY STUDENT TO BE AN UPSTANDER. An “upstander” is someone who recognizes when something is wrong and acts to make it right. EACH WEEK WE WILL ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO TAKE PART IN A THEME… Week of April 9th: Help someone this week: hold a door open, help pick up items someone may have accidentally dropped, help your teacher or fellow classmate, help our custodians by cleaning up after yourself or picking up litter around the halls or in the classroom… Make someone smile..Say good morning, good afternoon, or just a simple hello with a smile to everyone you see, sit with someone new at lunch or in the classroom, write something kind on a post it and stick it on their locker or desk. Week of April 16th: Say Thank You this week to anyone who may have helped you, thank your parents, thank your teachers, thank a custodian, thank any staff member who may have assisted you in solving a problem or situation, say thank you to a classmate who may have helped you with something, say thank you to a grandparent, aunt, uncle, say thank you to a police officer… Week of April 23rd: Volunteer: give a little bit of your time this week by volunteering outside of school within the community ..soup kitchen, church, retirement home, tutoring, elementary school, or volunteer your time inside the building maybe you can help someone in the building during lunch or after school. -

The Greek Relief Committee: America’s Response to the Greek Genocide (A Research Note) Nikolaos Hlamides London, UK In studies of the various relief efforts launched in response to the fate of Ottoman Christian minorities in the early twentieth century, much attention is given to the American Committee for Armenian and Syrian Relief and, in particular, to its successors under different names, especially the Near East Relief. The role of other American-based aid organizations has been largely overlooked. This paper serves as an introduction to the Greek Relief Committee, a New York City–based organization that worked alongside other relief organizations from 1917 until 1921, administering aid to the Ottoman Greek population. Unknown Heroes are those ordinary men and women who demonstrated the ‘courage to care’ by protecting, assisting or sheltering victims of mass genocide. Such tales emerge from the darkest and most horrific events in modern history and are important moments in time upon which to reflect. Faced with such large-scale brutality, it is all too easy to become overwhelmed by the horror. One cannot avoid the inescapable question: how can humans behave so inhumanely towards each other? The stories of the ‘unknown heroes’ demonstrate that even in the darkest of times there will always be ordinary people who will stand up and place themselves at risk to protect others from prejudice and injustice, racism, bullying and discrimination. -
