A good demonstration of this effect is the series of works contained by this volume; they have been previously presented, submitted to the thorough analysis and in- depth assessment of the participants to the International Conference titled Ethnicity, Confession and Intercultural Dialogue at the European Union's East Border, with a wide European audience, excellently organized in Oradea between 2 and 5 June 2011, by our colleague Mircea Brie, known for his ongoing and valuable research in this field. Note that the title Ethno-Confessional Realities in the Romanian Area: Historical Perspectives gathers only the works presented at the panel with the same name at the said conference, the other works being the subject of another volume; this fact proves the magnitude of the event and the interest awakened for debates regarding such current and exciting topic. The volume coordinators - Professor Ioan Horga, Professor Sorin Sipos, Dr. Mircea Brie, Lecturer - have grouped the 19 scientific contributions signed by both established historians, and by young researchers, be they historians or not, in three chapters: Confession and Religious Minorities; Ethnicity and Nationalism; and Migration and Assimilation. The first part houses works dedicated to historical realities relative to the Romanian space that are traditionally characterized by ethnic and confessional complexity such as Transylvania - understood in its broad sense - or Bessarabia, during the last three centuries. First, our study follows the impact that the confessionalization process had on the Romanian population in Transylvania, through the emergence of the Greek-Catholic denomination, which broke the previous Orthodox religious bloc, splitting the mostly peasant Romanian society of the time, creating a moment of initial confusion, of exacerbation of emotional states that led to disputes, including violence, before the Greek Orthodox and Catholics believers would accept tolerance, coexistence and cooperation. Religious sensibility and how it affects the 7 Barbu ŞTEFĂNESCU community sociability transcend from the notes left by priests or teachers of previous centuries - subjective evidence, indispensable to the research of peasant mentality, dominated by orality and with little expression in writing. Two papers - signed by Eugen Ghiţă and Corneliu Eugen Pădureanu – address the ethnic and confessional issues in today‘s western Romania from the historical demographics specialist position; in a first case, in the modern world and Arad circumscribed area; in the second case, an overview of the entire region in the period between the two World Wars. The call for statistical data processing, so characteristic to historical demography, is illustrative to marking the quantitative developments of the population in general and its adherence to various denominations. It allows for necessary and illustrative comparisons over time at different chronological landmarks, or in space between administrative units. Integrated in the general history of an era, the findings of these statistical measurements have the merit of capturing the dynamics of the evolution, in its most sensitive nuances. A pertinent analysis of the situation of confessional minorities in the province of Bessarabia turned into a gubernia of the tsarist Russia during the reign of Tsar Nicholas I, with a particular analysis of the Jewish population, is owed to the historian Ion Gumenîi. In his case we have a recurrence of one of the leading researchers of this phenomenon in the mentioned area. A reign – of the said Tsar – so controversial in the today‘s historiography, and concerned with the homogenization of the language and the common denominator of the Orthodox Christian religion, is concerned with solving the Jewish problem from anti-Semitic positions; this is the main message of the Moldovan historian and university professor, transmitted with resources of the specialist accustomed to the research theme and the tools required by such theme. The following contribution to this section signed by Lavinia Buda uses the symbolism of the Rosary introduction to the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church at the turn of XIX-XX centuries, to capture the theological debates and disputes about the possible removal of this denomination from the Eastern ritual matrix, in a context of a broader Catholic

IBAC 2012 vol.2 TOPONIMYS WITH ANCIENT TURK ORIGINS IN THE BALKANS Prof .Ass. Hajiyeva GALIBA Nakhchivan State Univresity, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract One of the sources dealing with the ancient Turkic history are toponyms. Toponymic investigations show that most of the ancient geographical names which have spread in Eurosia, in Central Asia, from North Africa, to Eastern Turkistan even in Siberia and these names were formed before Roman and Byzantine periods. So development of toponymic investigations, study of the history of Turkic peoples and scientific investigation of existing geographical names which keep the history of Turkic peoples have great significance. One of the uninvestigated fields of the Turkic history are geographical names keeping historical facts within are the holy Balkan areas. The toponymic investigations carried on the Balkans show that these territories are the places were the ancient Turkic tribes were firstly settled and possessed. This fact is proved by the Turkic tribe names and by the words of different semantic meaning of the languages of Turkic tribes. The great deal of Balkan geographical names are the names derived out of ethnoniyms thus the names reflecting ancient Turkic tribe names (Astipos//Astepe//Ishtip, Izletdere, Vardar, Sofular, Gilan, Sahsuvar kariyesi, Kosalar village, Tatarli kariyesi, in the Kosova, Uskup, Usturumca, Kumanova, Propishtip, Kochana, Makedonska Kamenika in Makedony, Araz district, Arazli, Azman, Cepine, Coban, Chorlu, Culfalar, Horozlar, Kangirlar, Sakarli, Sungurlar, Karuk, Kaspi, Kaz//Kas, Kazancilar, Kecililer, Kuman, Padarlar, Sofular, Tatar, Uzlar in Bulgaria) show that Balkans historically were Turkic areas. Geographical names are the real witnesses of history. We must pay great attention to the scientific investigations of the geographical names in Balkan states.

One of the defining business conditions of 2009 was the effect of the world economic crisis. Most of our mem- bers experienced lower sales and more difficult bank and financing conditions. Many were forced to pursue cost- cutting measures in order to limit losses and conserve cash liquidity which, in turn, negatively impacted the businesses of their suppliers. AmCham offered both for- mal and informal consultations for our members, direct support for their businesses and modified internal poli- cies, all aimed at easing the economic pressures on our members and helping our members share strategies for dealing with the economic downturn. In a year when most businesses aggressively reduced their costs, virtu- ally all AmCham members maintained their memberships in AmCham, indicating the high value they place on our association and services.

  • The Republic of Budjak: Next in Line?
(https://neweasterneurope.eu/) The Republic of Budjak: Next in line? The idea of the Republic of Budjak appeared at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s within the process of a national awakening triggered by perestroika. The republic was supposed to include the localities where Gagauzians and Bulgarians lived in southern Moldova and, in another variant, were also in the neighboring southern part of the Ukrainian Odesa region. No such scenario was realised, however Gagauzians from Moldova managed to create their (separatist) republic that existed till 1994 when their region was granted autonomous status within a unitary state. From time to time, the idea of the Republic of Budjak had returned. Bessarabia spring of 2015 The “Da Vinci AG” Analytic Group warns in its report that the Republic of Budjak could be established in the spring of 2015. It would be rather called the Bessarabian People’s Republic, alluding to the already existing peoples’ republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, and it would not be limited just to Gagauzians and Bulgarians, encompassing the whole southern part of the Odesa region.

TERRITORIAL SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DISPARITIES WITHIN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ARAD COUNTY IRENA MOCANU Romanian Academy – Institute of Geography, 12 Dimitrie Racovi ţă , 023993, Bucharest, Romania e-mail : [email protected] Abstract: Identifying the territorial disparities in the socio-economic development of Arad County implies taking the following six research stages: selecting the relevant statistical indicators, analysing their socio-economic significance, standardising the absolute values of the indicators, calculating the Complex Index of Development, delimitating and generally characterising both the favourable areas for development and the less favourable ones. The indicators were selected to reflect the specifics of agricultural, industrial and touristic activities, of the health and education systems, of the dwellings and public utility infrastructure, of the labour and inhabiting force. The territorial distribution of the value of the 24 indicators and secondary indexes emphasised in most cases a difference between the ATU (administrative territorial units) from the Eastern and Western parts of the Arad County. The Complex Index of Development (calculated as Hull Score) offered the possibility of separating the areas that were favourable for socio-economic development (generated by the urban areas along two longitudinal lineaments, e.g. Western and Central, and in the irregular areas in the Carpathian depression) from the less favourable areas (62% of the ATU in the Arad County). Dissertation Advisor: Catherine Evtuhov, Ph. D. ABSTRACT Based upon a reading of Ottoman, Russian, and Bulgarian archival documents, this dissertation examines the response by the Ottoman and Russian states to the accelerated pace of migration and spread of disease in the Black Sea region from the outbreak of the Russo-Ottoman War of 1768-1774 to the signing of the Treaty of Hünkar Iskelesi in 1833. Building upon introductory chapters on the Russian-Ottoman Black Sea frontier and a case study of Bulgarian population movements between the Russian and Ottoman Empires, this dissertation analyzes Russian and Ottoman migration and settlement policies, the spread of epidemic diseases (plague and cholera) in the Black Sea region, the construction of quarantines and the implementation of travel document regimes. The role and position of the Danubian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia as the “middle ground” between the Ottoman and Russian Empires
