The Textile Institute Innovation Award 2012 Inaugurated in 1990 The Textile Institute Innovation Award is given to organisations for outstanding achievement in enhancing international textile interests through creativity, commerce, marketing or economic development.

Mr Sadami Sakai, was invited to accept the award for 2012 on behalf Kato Tech Company Ltd which was established in 1961, in Kyoto, Japan.

Kato Tech Co Ltd’s achievement is great and obvious in the world. Innovation is at its outstanding achievement in enhancing international textile interests through creativity and precise equipment’s that Kato Tech Co Ltd has developed over a half century.

Kato Tech equipment has been invented for the objective evaluation of properties for fibrous materials (from a single fibre to fabrics) since being established in 1961. In the 1960’s every company, institute, scientist and technologist had sought comfortable materials/clothes and with an objective evaluation method. Consequently, Kato Tech company has provided the basis not only to connect products, stores, scientist and consumers, but also to connect textile materials and human senses through their objective measuring system. The company has enriched the condition of a factory producing system and research verification and has improved the resultant clothing life. Up to date more than two thousand systems have been placed within organisations, schools and universities in over 50 countries.

The company has recently introduced new areas in medical and in fibre spinning fields. Kato Tech Nano fiber Electro spinning Unit (NEU) is now popular and it can produce Nano fibres from 50nm

to 800nm in diameter. The biggest feature of the NEU is its ability to use electro spinning to easily produce Nano fibres using small amounts of polymer. Currently, the use of Nano fibres in the IT, biotech, healthcare and fabrics industries is expected to increase dramatically, taking advantage of the increased surface area and fineness of materials and textiles made from Nano fibres.

The Textile Institute New Materials Award Established in 2010 to celebrate the centenary of The Textile Institute, the award is presented to an individual or organisation demonstrating outstanding advances in technical textiles and their application.

The awardee in 2012 was Dr Masukuni Mori, director of Mori Engineering Consultant Office. Dr Mori had been working and studying textile technology, dyeing, fabric handling and mechanical properties of wool fabrics since 1950, having worked at Tsuyakin Kogyo Co Ltd up to 1996. After retiring from the company, he worked as the Japan Professional Engineer, receiving a qualified energy manager’s license, he established Mori Engineering Consultant Office.

He has been actively involved in the development of new textile materials not only in Japan but also in many countries: South American countries, China, Korea and Italy.

His knowledge and experience about textiles, especially in dyeing and finishing of wool fabrics, have been absolutely imperative. His policy of creation textiles is for more comfortable, more beautiful and more eco-friendly garments. Fabric treatment methods produced by his scientific and distinguished achievements are: 1) excellent super- black wool fabrics 2) the anti-felting treatment by argon–plasma not using chlorine and resin, and controlling yarns or fibres, he is creating the ‘ideal textile’ for beautiful garments and makes many kinds of fabric types using wool fibre, silk like, linen like, leather like and traditional wool fabrics using his full technological techniques and sophisticated feeling.

Consumers will choose wool garments more and more easily and frequently because of the easy care ability, comfort, beauty and eco-friendly property of wool fibre and textiles. In 2012, Vivienne Westwood used wool textiles in her collection. He also works as a textile designer based on his extensive knowledge. He had a booth and presented his textiles, mainly made of wool fibre and the mixture of Japanese paper (Washi) and wool, using natural dyestuff in Milano in 2010 and captured the European buyers of remarkable fashion brands.
