    PAYING ATTENTION TO PUBLIC READERS OF CANADIAN LITERATURE: POPULAR GENRE SYSTEMS, PUBLICS, AND CANONS by KATHRYN GRAFTON BA, The University of British Columbia, 1992 MPhil, University of Stirling, 1994 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (English) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2010 © Kathryn Grafton, 2010 ABSTRACT Paying Attention to Public Readers of Canadian Literature examines contemporary moments when Canadian literature has been canonized in the context of popular reading programs. I investigate the canonical agency of public readers who participate in these programs: readers acting in a non-professional capacity who speak and write publicly about their reading experiences. I argue that contemporary popular canons are discursive spaces whose constitution depends upon public readers. My work resists the common critique that these reading programs and their canons produce a mass of readers who read the same work at the same time in the same way. To demonstrate that public readers are canon-makers, I offer a genre approach to contemporary canons that draws upon literary and new rhetorical genre theory. I contend in Chapter One that canons are discursive spaces comprised of public literary texts and public texts about literature, including those produced by readers. I study the intertextual dynamics of canons through Michael Warner’s theory of publics and Anne Freadman’s concept of “uptake.” Canons arise from genre systems that are constituted to respond to exigencies readily recognized by many readers, motivating some to participate. I argue that public readers’ agency lies in the contingent ways they select and interpret a literary work while taking up and instantiating a canonizing genre.

    Blogging Glossary Glossary: General Terms Atom: A popular feed format developed as an alternative to RSS. Autocasting: Automated form of podcasting that allows bloggers and blog readers to generate audio versions of text blogs from RSS feeds. Audioblog: A blog where the posts consist mainly of voice recordings sent by mobile phone, sometimes with some short text message added for metadata purposes. (cf. podcasting) Blawg: A law blog. Bleg: An entry in a blog requesting information or contributions. Blog Carnival: A blog article that contains links to other articles covering a specific topic. Most blog carnivals are hosted by a rotating list of frequent contributors to the carnival, and serve to both generate new posts by contributors and highlight new bloggers posting matter in that subject area. Blog client: (weblog client) is software to manage (post, edit) blogs from operating system with no need to launch a web browser. A typical blog client has an editor, a spell-checker and a few more options that simplify content creation and editing. Blog publishing service: A software which is used to create the blog. Some of the most popular are WordPress, Blogger, TypePad, Movable Type and Joomla. Blogger: Person who runs a blog. Also blogger.com, a popular blog hosting web site. Rarely: weblogger. Blogirl: A female blogger Bloggernacle: Blogs written by and for Mormons (a portmanteau of "blog" and "Tabernacle"). Generally refers to faithful Mormon bloggers and sometimes refers to a specific grouping of faithful Mormon bloggers. Bloggies: One of the most popular blog awards. Blogroll: A list of other blogs that a blogger might recommend by providing links to them (usually in a sidebar list).

Sejarah Media Sosial Media sosial kini memiliki peranan penting dalam kehidupan, semula media sosial hanya digunakan untuk bersosialisasi dan berinteraksi antar pengguna.Dalam perkembangannya, media sosial digunakan untuk berbagai kepentingan, mulai dari berbagi pengetahuan, kegiatan sosial, menyebar undangan hingga jualan. Pesatnya perkembangan teknologi sekarang membuat banyak aplikasi media sosial baru yang bermunculan di dunia maya. Kini dengan mengandalkan smartphone yang berhubungan dengan internet, seseorang sudah bisa mengakses beberapa situs sosial media seperti, facebook, twitter, line, wechat, kakao talk dan itu semua bisa kita akses dimana saja dan kapan saja asalkan terhubung dengan koneksi internet dan itu membuat arus informasi semakin besar dan pesat. Perkembangan sosial media yang pesat ini tidak hanya terjadi pada negara negara maju saja, di negara berkembang seperti Indonesia, banyak user atau pengguna sosial media dan perkembangan yang pesat ini bisa menjadi pengganti peran media massa konvensiaonal dalam menyebarkan berita atau informasi. 25 Pada tahun 1920-an, menurut the Oxford English Dictionary orang mulai berbicara tentang media masa dan satu generasi. Kemudian pada tahun 1950-an, orang mulai bicara tentang revolusi komunikasi, namun perhatian terhadap sarana-sarana komunikasi jauh lebih tua daripda itu. Retorika, yaitu studi tentang seni berkomunikasi secara lisan dan tulisan, sudah mendapat tempat yang sangat terhormat di masa Yunani dan Romawi kuno. Retorika juga dipelajari di abad pertengahan, dan dengan semangat yang lebih besar lagi di zaman Renaissance.1 Dalam paruh pertama abad ke-20, terutama sekali ketika munculnya perang dunia ke dua, perhatian para ilmuwan terfokus pada studi tentang propaganda. Baru-baru ini, beberapa ahli teori yang ambisius, mulai dari antropologi prancis Claude Levi-Strauss sampai pakar sosiologi jerman Niklas Luhman telah memperluas konsep komunikasi lebih jauh lagi.

    BAB II KAJIAN TEORI TENTANG PERSEPSI, DAKWAH, DAN BLOG 2.1. Persepsi 2.1.1. Pengertian Persepsi Persepsi merupakan obyek-obyek di sekitar yang ditangkap melalui indera dan diproyeksikan pada bagian tertentu dalam otak sehingga dapat mengamati suatu obyek (Husaini, 1978: 103). Persepsi , adalah inti komunikasi, sedangkan penafsiran (interpretasi) adalah inti persepsi, yang identik dengan penyandian –balik (decoding) dalam proses komunikasi (Mulyana, 2002: 167). Persepsi disebut inti komunikasi, karena jika persepsi tidak akurat tidak mungkin terjadi komunikasi yang efektif. Untuk lebih memahami persepsi, berikut adalah beberapa definisi persepsi menurut para ahli, diantaranya: 1) Desiderato, persepsi adalah pengalaman tentang objek, peristiwa, atau hubungan-hubungan yang diperoleh dengan menyimpulkan informasi dan menafsirkan pesan. Persepsi ialah memberikan makna pada stimuli inderawi (sensory stimuli) (Rakhmat, 1996: 51). 16 17 2) Branca, mendefinisikan persepsi sebagai suatu proses yang didahului oleh penginderaan (Walgito, 2002: 45). 3) Moskowitz dan Orgel, persepsi merupakan proses yang intergrated dari individu terhadap stimulus yang diterimanya (Walgito, 2002: 46). 4) Epstein dan Roger, persepsi adalah seperangkat proses dengan mengenali, mengorganisasikan, dan memahami serapan-serapan inderawi yang diterima dari stimuli lingkungan (Sternberg, 2008: 105). 5) Joseph A. Considered by many (often including the author) as a blatant act of navel-gazing, many bloggers nevertheless seemed to feel the need for some reflection on this relatively new discursive form, a sort of interrogation of its possibilities but also its limitations. In looking back at all of my own posts at The Reading Experience (launched in early 2004), it became clear enough that I did my share of metablogging, but in rereading these posts it also seemed to me that many of them still had resonance in what is now a completely transformed cyber environment. (Few people still speak of the “blogosphere.”) Inevitably, many such posts involved predictions about the form’s future, and while some of my predictions quite clearly did not come to pass, others have mostly proven accurate—it is now seldom disputed that a blog post can be the vehicle for serious and extended analysis, for example.

It is an honor and a privilege to represent the Washington Library Association in this capacity and I look forward to working with you, the members, over the coming two years. I’d like to thank Carolynne Myall for her many contribu- tions to WLA and its culture during her term as president. I’ve heard praise from many about the positive results of her focus on making the association’s legislative actions more open and transparent to the members. I’d also like to thank her for her openness and willingness to share information along the way that helped ease me into my new role. “Washington Connects!” the theme of this year’s annual conference was such an appropriate one. A significant WLA role is to facilitate connections between individuals and libraries, and through those Martha Parsons connections improve services to our customers.
