NIZHNY NOVGOROD REGION Nizhny Novgorod region is a province of the Russian Federation located in the center of the European part of Russia. The total area of the region is 76 900 square kilometers. Nizhny Novgorod is an important economic, transport and cultural center. Its population amounts to 1 255 159 meaning it is the fifth- largest region in Russia in terms of population. The city is also the center of the whole Nizhny Novgorod metropolitan area and its population of 2.08 million makes it the forth-largest in the country. The Nizhny Novgorod region ranks high among the most successfully developed regional economies in Russia. Industrial sector equals to 50-60% of gross product of the city, which is about 40% of the whole turnover of the Nizhny Novgorod region. The most developed industries are the following: mechanic engineering and metal working (about 69% of the whole output in the city), food, ferrous and non-ferrous, medical, machine building, chemical industry, timber industry, pulp-and-paper industry, consumer goods and wood-processing industries. At present the Nizhny Novgorod region supports foreign trade relations with 125 countries of the world attracting actively Russian and foreign investors. International airport, passenger and cargo river ports, powerful railway junction enabled to prolong transnational European corridor up to Nizhniy Novgorod and make the region attractive for investment. Water transport and port Nizhny Novgorod • The Nizhny Novgorod region has access to all the seas washing the European part of Russia and more than 900 km of internal waterways • Located at the confluence of the Oka and the Volga rivers the port is an important cross point of international transport corridors "North - South" and "East- West“ • The Port has licenses for all basic types of activity: loadingunloading service, carriage of passengers and cargoes, production and supplying with non-metal materials, geological prospecting work.
