NIZHNY NOVGOROD REGION Nizhny Novgorod region is a province of the Russian Federation located in the center of the European part of Russia. The total area of the region is 76 900 square kilometers. Nizhny Novgorod is an important economic, transport and cultural center. Its population amounts to 1 255 159 meaning it is the fifth- largest region in Russia in terms of population. The city is also the center of the whole Nizhny Novgorod metropolitan area and its population of 2.08 million makes it the forth-largest in the country.
The Nizhny Novgorod region ranks high among the most successfully developed regional economies in Russia. Industrial sector equals to 50-60% of gross product of the city, which is about 40% of the whole turnover of the Nizhny Novgorod region. The most developed industries are the following: mechanic engineering and metal working (about 69% of the whole output in the city), food, ferrous and non-ferrous, medical, machine building, chemical industry, timber industry, pulp-and-paper industry, consumer goods and wood-processing industries.
