Historical background

The town of Arzamas was founded in 1578 by Ivan the Terrible as a fortress protecting conquered Mordovian lands. In the XVII century Arzamas became an important hub on the trade way between Moscow and the south-eastern parts of the country. In 1954 Arzamas became the administrative centre of the Arzamas Region that existed in 1954—1957. During the Soviet times the town was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honour.

There are 130 cultural heritage sites including 18 heritage sites of federal significance in Arzamas. Main sights:
