• Sustainability of Malay Traditional Music Via a Graded Music Examination System : the Malay Gamelan
The 1st International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Arts Creation and Studies (IICAIC) SUSTAINABILITY OF MALAY TRADITIONAL MUSIC VIA A GRADED MUSIC EXAMINATION SYSTEM : THE MALAY GAMELAN Shahanum Mohamad Shah UniversitiTeknologi MARA, Malaysia [email protected] Zaharul Lailiddin Saidon Sultan Idris University of Education, Malaysia [email protected] Abstract As evidenced by current practices, the traditional musics of Malaysia appear to be sidelined in favour of music which is more accessible and readily available to the younger generation. The lack of exposure to traditional music also breeds unfamiliarity of this music and hence is not appreciated or understood by most Malaysians. As music is an integral part of human culture, it is important for this genre of music to be preserved for the future generation. As compared to the availability of examination systems for western music, there is no mechanism for assessing musical attainment for the local music traditions in Malaysia. A structured system for assessing and awarding certificates based on levels of achievement in the local music traditions is needed which will provide a platform for musicians involved in the local music traditions to benchmark their achievement and obtain the necessary qualifications which can assist them in furthering their studies or gain employment. This paper will discuss how establishing a graded music examination system can help in the sustainability efforts of Malay traditional music in general and the Malay gamelan in particular. Due to the nature of this study, both field work and desk work were used. Research methods used included observation of performances, being a participant-observer during practices, interview sessions and focus groups with various practitioners from Malaysia and Indonesia and audio/visual documentation.

  • Aspects of Regionalism in Java and Bali by Mike Burns
i Gambang Techniques: Aspects of Regionalism in Java and Bali by Mike Burns A project prepared for a Masters Degree in Ethnomusicology, at the University of New England under the supervision of Drs David Goldsworthy and Andrew Alter Fig 1: Pak Kurnadi playing gambang at Hotel Bentani, Cirebon Prologue He sits at the gambang. The beaters in his hands travel up and down the wooden keys. It is a sound you hear outside the bungalows of Bali, in the wayang kulit of Java, in Sundanese wayang golek, and during the tourist oriented angklung shows. The music is in perpetual motion, but with frequent bounces and syncopations. The tuning is called slendro, the scale with no semitones. Is he making it all up? What patterns are evident, and are the choices his, his cultures or both? Why does this instrument carry so much melody and rhythm? ii Abstract This thesis investigates the use of wood and bamboo keyed xylophones, often known by the name gambang, throughout the islands of Java and Bali; analysing playing styles in the dominant cultural centres of Java (Solo and Yogyakarta), Sunda (Bandung), and of the gambang areas of Bali (Negara and Tenganan), and thus to create broad divisions within the thesis; examining playing patterns from lessons and transcriptions and placing those variations and developments in an historico-cultural context; and examining in particular the xylophone practices of the border regions of Banyuwangi and Cirebon, comparing them with general models for the regions surrounding them, thus seeking signatures distinctive to each area. In so doing the thesis investigates issues of local, regional and national identity, and questions in what ways these have affected the distinctive styles of each area, and whether any dominant cultures (including the West) have changed the old and new traditions of Indonesian gambang playing.

  • JAVANESE GAMELAN TERMINOLOGY Barry Drummond Gamelan Laras Tentrem
JAVANESE GAMELAN TERMINOLOGY Barry Drummond Gamelan Laras Tentrem Instruments of the Gamelan Gamelan Generic term for ensembles of predominantly percussion instruments of Indonesia, especially in Java and Bali. Bronze is the preferred material for the gongs and metallophones, but brass and iron are used as well. The instruments constituting a complete gamelan in present-day Central Java are: Gong Ageng The largest of the hanging gongs, approximately 80-100 cm in diameter. Gong Suwukan Sometimes called Siyem. Mid-size hanging gongs, approximately 50-60 cm in diameter. Gamelan Terminology 2 Kempul The smallest hanging gongs, approximately 30-40 cm in diameter. Kenong The largest of the horizontal gongs resting on racks. Kethuk and Kempyang Two small horizontal gongs which form a pair. The above instruments form the gong structure in gendhing (musical compositions, see below) with the gong ageng marking the largest sections, called gongan, and the kenong usually dividing these into either two or four sections called kenongan. The kempul, in forms that use them, usually divide a kenongan in half while the kethuk and kempyang mark the pulse of the structure in between stronger beats. In addition, some gamelan have two small hanging gongs (± 25 cm), engkuk and kemong, which, in certain sections and irama (tempo/density level, see below) of slendro pieces, replace the kempyang. Slenthem Sometimes called Gender Panembung since its construction is like the gender described below, i.e., keys suspended over individual tuned resonators. Saron Demung Commonly shortened to Demung. Pitched an octave above the slenthem, its keys, like the other saron, lie atop a trough resonator.

Singa Nebah: Adapting a Javanese Gamelan Composition for a Western Percussion Ensemble Brian C.W. Pfeifer A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts University of Washington 2014 Reading Committee: Thomas Collier, Chair Michael Crusoe Lawrence Starr Program Authorized to Offer Degree: School of Music ©Copyright 2014 Brian C.W. Pfeifer University of Washington Abstract Singa Nebah: Adapting a Javanese Gamelan composition for a Western Percussion Ensemble Brian C.W. Pfeifer Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Thomas Collier, Director of Percussion Studies School of Music It has become increasingly common for Western musicians to arrange and adapt music of other cultures for their ensembles. This is especially true for the percussion ensemble where Afro- Cuban, Brazilian, Indian, and other traditions are well represented. Many of these styles of music are well suited to performance by a Western ensemble due to their heavy reliance on drumming and their shared scale systems. The music of Java, specifically the gamelan however, has not seen the same amount of interest. Many students are exposed to Javanese music through college or high school music classes, but they are usually limited to listening to recordings as most institutions do not have the resources to own a gamelan. The purpose of this study is to create a framework for the composer who wishes to arrange gamelan music for Western percussion instruments. Discussed within are issues such as: instrument selection, tuning, improvisation, and authenticity. These questions are approached carefully so as to represent the original source as accurately and authentically as possible.

  • Javanese Gamelan
ARTICLE Musical Practice of the Javanese Gamelan In 1827, in an account of the celebration of King George IV's birthday in the April 26 th issue of the Singapore Chronicle held by the Resident of Singapore, at that time, Robert Fullerton, we are offered a description of the event where we come across an interesting excerpt: On the 23 rd the Hon: the Resident gave an entertainment in celebration of the anniversary of His Majesty’s birth, unequalled perhaps in the annals of Singapore festivity. As night approached, the Government Hill was lighted up with innumerable lamps…spread mats in a square of considerable extent, surrounded by seats which received the visitors as they arrived whilst the area was occupied by a groupe of Javanese musicians and dancers . The music of these performances was, to our ear at least, not unpleasing, but the dancing of the Javanese, if this could be considered a fair specimen of it, has little to recommend it….the sex of these professors formed matter of considerable speculation but whichever it may have been formed they formed a curious and characteristic groupe which occupied the attention of the company. 1 In a court in Singapore between 5 th and 23 rd March 1898, a Captain Crauford instituted a suit against a Mr. Wee Soon Chew under Section 290 of the Penal Code. The evidence he proposed to call would show that for the last few months defendant had been holding what was called a Chinese wayang , the loud beating of drums, and gongs or other metal instruments, and this had gone on almost every night until the summons was taken out.
