TBA Mindfulness Sessions Tuesdays, 7:45 PM, July 21, July 28, August 4, August 11, August 18, August 25, September 1, September 8, Septem- ber 15, September 22, September 29, October 6, October 13, October 20, October 27, November 3, November 10, and November 17, 2020. In this workshop we will continue to explore what Jewish mindfulness is. We will touch on the first level of the deep dive into ourselves that this dimension offers. The Jewish tradition has many tools accessi- ble to us, if only we allow for an unconventional perspective. Talmud with Max Edwards, Rabbinical Assistant Thursdays, July 30 , August 13 & 27, 1:00 to 2:00 PM Come join us this summer for a bi-weekly dive into the sea of literature that is the Talmud. In this course, we’ll survey a range of Talmudic texts dealing largely with the theme of “community.” We’ll explore the ways in which our Rabbis sought to shape the contours of their own community structures, as well as their roles within community structures not their own. We’ll bring in our own voices to this millennia-long conversation and examine where we fit ourselves in, especially given the political and social crises we’re facing today. All are welcome! No background in Talmud neces- sary; all texts will be taught using English translation. “The Goldberg Variations: Class, Ethnicity, and Identity in “The Goldbergs “ with Cantor Jessica Epstein . Zoom classes: July 23, August 20, 27 & September 2, at 7:00 PM. (TBA members only) In each session, we will watch an episode of The Goldbergs through a screen-share on Zoom, and discuss together. “Yoo-hoo, is anybody?” “That’s Molly Goldberg, folks. A woman with a place in every heart, and a finger in every pie.” From 1929 until 1946, you could hear Gertrude Berg as Molly ask that question six nights a week. From there to a run on Broadway and eventually several years on television, The Goldberg pre- sented a Jewish family as a matter of fact—a heartwarming serial and sitcom that never shied away from the reality of the Jewish experience. Berg created and wrote the series as well, a pioneer at the time in a male-dominated field. The 1950s changed all of that. After a stable seventeen years on radio and a successful Broadway run, the television show bounced between networks, was rocked by the HUAC and blacklisting of one of the leads, and ended after try- ing to adjust to a different format and setting. As the television landscape grew more homogenous in tone and setting, Berg shifted from an urban to a suburban setting—from striving to assimilation—but something was lost along the way. This class will explore ways in which the Jewish family—and the Jewish mother in particular—were portrayed. We will also examine how the gradual removal of their ethnicity echoed the general trend toward homogenization in 1950s television. And we will look at how Berg broke ground for creators and influenced countless films and television series that came after. TBA Book Group with Rabbi David Z, Vaisberg Wednesday, August 12, 7:30 PM Between The World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, to- day, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion.
