5 TBA SUMMER CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING VIRTUAL LEARNING For information on all Zoom Classes, email [email protected] or call 973.994.2290 and leave a message. TBA Mindfulness Sessions Tuesdays, 7:45 PM, July 21, July 28, August 4, August 11, August 18, August 25, September 1, September 8, Septem- ber 15, September 22, September 29, October 6, October 13, October 20, October 27, November 3, November 10, and November 17, 2020. In this workshop we will continue to explore what Jewish mindfulness is. We will touch on the first level of the deep dive into ourselves that this dimension offers. The Jewish tradition has many tools accessi- ble to us, if only we allow for an unconventional perspective.

Talmud with Max Edwards, Rabbinical Assistant Thursdays, July 30 , August 13 & 27, 1:00 to 2:00 PM Come join us this summer for a bi-weekly dive into the sea of literature that is the Talmud. In this course, we’ll survey a range of Talmudic texts dealing largely with the theme of “community.” We’ll explore the ways in which our Rabbis sought to shape the contours of their own community structures, as well as their roles within community structures not their own. We’ll bring in our own voices to this millennia-long conversation and examine where we fit ourselves in, especially given the political and social crises we’re facing today. All are welcome! No background in Talmud neces- sary; all texts will be taught using English translation.

“The Goldberg Variations: Class, Ethnicity, and Identity in “The Goldbergs “ with Cantor Jessica Epstein . Zoom classes: July 23, August 20, 27 & September 2, at 7:00 PM. (TBA members only) In each session, we will watch an episode of The Goldbergs through a screen-share on Zoom, and discuss together.

“Yoo-hoo, is anybody?” “That’s Molly Goldberg, folks. A woman with a place in every heart, and a finger in every pie.” From 1929 until 1946, you could hear Gertrude Berg as Molly ask that question six nights a week. From there to a run on Broadway and eventually several years on television, The Goldberg pre- sented a Jewish family as a matter of fact—a heartwarming serial and sitcom that never shied away from the reality of the Jewish experience. Berg created and wrote the series as well, a pioneer at the time in a male-dominated field.

The 1950s changed all of that. After a stable seventeen years on radio and a successful Broadway run, the television show bounced between networks, was rocked by the HUAC and blacklisting of one of the leads, and ended after try- ing to adjust to a different format and setting. As the television landscape grew more homogenous in tone and setting, Berg shifted from an urban to a suburban setting—from striving to assimilation—but something was lost along the way.

This class will explore ways in which the Jewish family—and the Jewish mother in particular—were portrayed. We will also examine how the gradual removal of their ethnicity echoed the general trend toward homogenization in 1950s television. And we will look at how Berg broke ground for creators and influenced countless films and television series that came after.

TBA Book Group with Rabbi David Z, Vaisberg Wednesday, August 12, 7:30 PM Between The World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, to- day, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free our- selves from its burden?

6 TBA SUMMER CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING VIRTUAL LEARNING Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’s attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son—and readers—the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children’s lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward. Available for purchase online at Amazon or at other booksellers.

Raising Social Consciousness Through Film: A Cinema Series Addressing Moral Issues Mondays, July 20, August 3, & 17, 7:30 PM sponsored by the Social Action Committee

Watch the films—all available on Netflix— before the discussion date, and then every two weeks, we will gather via Zoom to discuss the film.

“Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those rip- ples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”—Robert Kennedy Film can exert a powerful influence on how we see the world and the way we consider problems facing society. This summer, we will watch four films and discuss the problems they highlight and how they have affected our world view our world view.

-Monday, July 20, 7:30 PM American Factory, directed by Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert; executive producers Michelle and Barack Obama (2019; 110 minutes; Netflix) American Factory (美国工厂; 美國工廠) is a 2019 American documentary film directed by Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert. In this Sundance award-winning documentary, high-tech China clashes with working-class America when a Chinese billionaire repurposes a defunct GM plant in Dayton, Ohio, and hires 2,000 blue-collar workers, only for the two sides to struggle finding common ground. The new would-be savior is Fuyao Glass America, a Chinese windshield manufacturer that rehired about two-thirds of the 3,000 workers laid off by GM. However, the inclusion of hundreds of Chinese workers that Fuyao flew in to with the grateful Ohioans ends up becoming a source of great tension. Shot in an immersive cinema-verite style, American Factory reveals the absurd everyday conflicts that prevent the workers from cohering and the ensuing culture clash.

-Monday, August 3, 7:30 PM Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution, directed by Nicole Newnham and Jim Lebrecht; executive producers Michelle and Barack Obama (2020; 108 minutes; Netflix) Crip Camp shines a light on the individuals who spent most of their adult lives fighting for human rights, with many having attended a camp for disabled teens called Camp Jened in the 1970s. Incredible archival footage from this camp opens the film, but we then follow the various people we’ve met as they spend the next few decades embroiled in activism to pass legislation to make the world accessible for those with disabilities. It’s a fight that never should have had to be fought in the first place, and it’s both inspiring and infuriating to see how tirelessly these individuals had to push and push and push to affect even the tiniest bit of change. – Adam Chitwood

-Monday, August 17, 7:30 PM The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, written, directed by and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor (201; 113 minutes; Netflix) The film is based on the memoir The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer.Born in Kasungu, Malawi, 13-year-old William Kamkwamba comes from a family of farmers who live in the nearby village of Wimbe. William also dabbles in fixing radios for his friends and neighbors and spends his free time looking through the local junkyard for salvageable electronic components. By the mid-2000s, failing crops due to drought and the resulting famine have devastated William’s village, leading to riots over government rationing and William’s family’s being robbed of their already meager grain stores. People soon begin abandoning the village, and William’s sister elopes with his former teacher in order to leave her family “one less mouth to feed.” Seeking to save his village, William invents an unconventional way to save his family and village from famine.

7 TBA Virtual Gala California Dreamin’ Honoring Rabbi Dantowitz

“I, Rufino Fernandez, Jr., Mayor of the Township of Livingston, do hereby proclaim Saturday, June 20, 2020 to be known now and forever as RABBI FAITH JOY DANTOWITZ DAY,” is how the proclamation began honoring Rabbi Faith Joy Dantowitz who left Temple B’nai Abraham to join her husband in California, whose career has taken him to Northern California this past year. She will become the rabbi of Congregation Emeth in Morgan Hill, California in August The TBA congregational family honored Rabbi Faith Joy Danowitz with a virtual online gala event entitled “California Dreamin’ ” on June 20.

The virtual evening on a Zoom webinar began with a showing of the virtual ad journal, which was well sup- ported by TBA members, the community, and Rabbi Faith Joy Dantowitz’ s family and friends. Commencing with a welcome message from event and Ways and Mean co- chairs Erica Facktor and Illana Lebersfeld, this virtual event was a combination of pre-recorded messages from TBA clergy, leadership and members, local clergy colleagues, as well as vocal performances by her family: husband David, sons Ezra, Benjamin, Samuel, and Daniel (a highlight of the evening) with live messages from Rabbi Dantowitz and TBA Senior Rabbi David Z. Vaisberg, and Havdalah led by Rabbi Vaisberg, Rabbi Dantowitz, and Cantor Jessica Epstein. The webinar was then followed up by a live Community Toast Zoom room where all who wished to do so could interact with and speak directly with Rabbi Dantowitz with their well wishes. The TBA family wishes Rabbi Dantowitz well on her next chapter.
