This was the impetus for other male victims to share their own difficult memories on the topic; most messaged me privately. Their jaw-dropping events are included in this book to open dialogue on what is and what is not sexual assault. I personally think it’s counter-productive for all minds to take one narrative on sexual assault, to have specific expectations of how a victim should feel or act after an attack. Some of the Bill Cosby accusers were demeaned with, “Liars! If it happened 30 years ago, why wait until now to say something?” or, “Liar! No one would hang around someone after being raped!” Those are dangerous and false assumptions. I hung around my sexual assaulter and I didn’t tell anyone for 30 years. I go into more detail in my book, YOUNG, GAY & RESTLESS: My SCANDALOUS On-Screen & Off-Screen Sexual Liberations, but basically at 21 in Hollywood a photographer drugged me and as I collapsed in the chair, he removed my pants and was blowing me. I have no idea what he did that night as I lay helpless and unconscious. Scrambling for my clothes the next morning, and driving home in a fog, I hit two cars. At 21, it did not occur to me I should alert the police as the photographer may be a serial rapist. My thoughts were: Damn. That was horrible. What an asshole. But what’s done is done. How do I make the best of this? Later that day I did make a phone call. But it was not what most would expect. I called the photographer to make an appointment to get the free photos he promised me, careful never to take a pill or drink from him again. People are shocked that’s how I dealt with this event, but to me it made perfect sense. I made lemonade from lemons and got great headshots to begin my Hollywood career. I was also sexually assaulted three other times, but very minimally compared to the accounts in this book, and none of my sexual assaults traumatized me. That being said, I am quite neurotic and have been traumatized by other things in my life, situations which would not worry others in the least, but the instances when men whom I was not attracted to put their unwanted hands on me or shoved their tongues in my mouth was not a big deal to me. I was just creeped out and took it as a compliment. Strangely, if a woman had done similar, I think that would have been traumatizing to me. I am not sure I can explain why. Different things traumatize people. None of my assaults were physically or mentally painful so I chose to ignore them, and could. There’s no doubt I would have been severely traumatized if I endured any of these horrific violent rapes reported in this book, and so I understand why these survivors are indeed traumatized, and hope they understand why I am not. Another reason I queried men on their sex assault histories was because as a child I craved attention from my male relatives. I even fantasized making love with them, and disclose in my YOUNG, GAY & RESTLESS book that I still masturbate to incest porn fantasies. But incest REALITY is another thing altogether, something I know nothing about. These upcoming pages were quite an education! Because I am in the public eye, a gay actor/activist and so open 2 about my sexual history, men feel very comfortable reaching out to me

Clare Sears Ph.D. Associate Professor HOW SHOCK PORN SHAPED AMERICAN SEXUAL CULTURE Alicia Marie Jimenez San Francisco, California 2017 This paper is about the lasting impact of “2 girls 1 cup” on American sexual identity. I analyze reaction videos focusing on three key themes; Fame, fear, and humor to understand how shock porn and internet culture came together in 2007. Centered around the creation of viral video, internet stardom, and a deep investment in American sexuality I focus very specific moment that allowed for viral stardom and the multitude of reaction videos recorded. The pop culture controversy surrounding “2 girls 1 cup” is part of a long history of abjection and censorship for explicit content.. I outline the widespread preoccupation and fascination with shock porn, as well as its lasting impacts on Americans’ sense of sexual self. • Casting Couch
The Casting Couch The ‘casting couch’ scenario: Impact of perceived employment benefit, reporting delay, complainant gender, and participant gender on juror decision-making in rape cases. Shona Mcintosh and Josh P Davis Department of Psychology, Social Work and Counselling, University of Greenwich, UK Correspondence to: Dr Josh P Davis Reader in Applied Psychology School of Human Sciences University of Greenwich London, SE10 9LS, UK [email protected] Keywords Casting couch, Jury decision making, juror decision making, rape myths, sexual assault Thanks To Bethan Burnside and Katy Weatherley for help with this project. 1 The Casting Couch Abstract Recent media reports of contemporary and historical rape and sexual assault cases have focused on the entertainment industry, particularly around the notion of the ‘casting couch’. This scenario in which a powerful figure obtains sexual acts from subordinate actors in exchange for employment was used to explore the influence of rape myths and Sexual Economic Theory on mock-juror decision-making. Participant-jurors (n = 907) viewed video and written testimony of a male or female complainant, accusing a male producer of rape. Delay before reporting the incident to the police (immediately, six months, ten years), and whether the complainant secured the acting role or not were varied. Females (79.7%) were significantly more likely than males (62.7%) to deliver a guilty verdict and to recommend longer prison sentences. When the complainant did not secure the acting role, and they delayed reporting the incident for six months, there was a trend for guilty verdict rates to be slightly higher when the complainant was male (80.5%) than female (64.5%).

  • Ingeborg Bachmann's Literary Critique of the Journalistic Media
“Es ist ein unglaublicher Betrug.” Ingeborg Bachmann’s literary critique of the journalistic media by Gisela Nittel A dissertation submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for admission to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2008 Department of Germanic Studies The University of Sydney Abstract Despite the consistency and regularity of Bachmann’s critique of journalists and journalistic content, there has been to date no dedicated study of her portrayal of the journalistic media in individual works or her work as a whole. This dissertation addresses this gap in Bachmann studies by undertaking a detailed and comprehensive analysis of Bachmann’s literary portrayal of the journalistic media from the time she first came into the literary spotlight in the early 1950s until her 1972 Simultan collection, the last work to be published in her lifetime. The primary focus of this dissertation is a close textual analysis of literary works in which Bachmann makes significant references to journalists and journalism, examining these references closely in the context of existing scholarly analyses. In a systematic analysis of each literary genre that Bachmann tackled—poetry, radio plays, short prose and novels—this study demonstrates that Bachmann’s critique of journalists and journalism recurs with notable frequency and consistency throughout her work from 1952 onwards. The detailed analyses show that Bachmann’s critique of the “fourth estate” ranges from the mildly critical to the vitriolic, and constantly returns to a core set of concerns about the misrepresentations perpetrated by the journalistic media. The negativity of Bachmann’s critique is, however, almost always offset (and even undercut) by evidence that the journalistic media are not always successful in their (according to Bachmann’s portrayal) deceitful and destructive practices.

I put recent research in surveillance studies, particularly work on informational doubling, in conversation with the concepts of the uncanny and the doppelgänger to reconsider the legacy of screen theory and cinematic discipline in relation to the ongoing ideological struggle between normativity and queerness. I begin my investigation in and around the Stonewall era examining the gothic roots and incarnation of gay identity.

RUNNING HEAD: THE TRUTH ABOUT CASTING BOSTON COLLEGE MORRISSEY COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION THE TRUTH ABOUT CASTING: AN ANALYSIS OF TYPECASTING IN THE BOSTON THEATRE MARKET A SENIOR HONOR THESIS BY NOELLE E. SCARLETT DECEMBER 2017 THE TRUTH ABOUT CASTING 2 Abstract As a young woman who plans on pursuing acting after graduation, I have begun to learn how I must craft myself in the professional world. In theatre, the importance of accurately portraying one’s “type” is a concept that has been consistently stressed. One sees the irony of “type” if they consider the very premise of acting, to portray someone other than oneself. If acting is actually “living truthfully under imaginary circumstances” as Meisner suggests, then any actor should be able to play any role. However, actors are constantly pigeonholed into roles that objectify them to a particular type. Academic research has failed to sufficiently address casting conventions, especially in theatre. My study aims to address this gap by gaining insight on casting practices from the director’s perspective. To put it simply, it is my hope that this thesis will reveal the intricacies of casting, including the prevalence of type. Consequently, this will generate a better understanding of the process so that others and myself can learn how to breed success and simultaneously maintain our dignity whilst adhering to a field that requires one to brand themself.

This study has also determined that there exists a relationship between these differing gender representations and concurrent changes in the gender norms of films created for the primary target audience the United States with secondary international audiences. This determination was aided by a detailed examination of the gender norms in multiple genres including science fiction, action, horror, and hybrid mixtures of these three.
