  • 13 White Woman Listen! Black Feminism and the Boundaries of Sisterhood
13 White Woman Listen! Black Feminism and the Boundaries of Sisterhood Hazel V. Carby I'm leaving evidence. And you got to leave evidence too. And your children got to leave evidence.... They burned all the documents.... We got to burn out what they put in our minds, like you burn out a wound. Except we got to keep what we need to bear witness. That scar that's left to bear witness. We got to keep it as visible as our blood. (Jones 1975) The black women's critique of history has not only involved us in coming to terms with "absences"; we have also been outraged by the ways in which it has made us visible, when it has chosen to see us. History has constructed our sexuality and our femininity as deviating from those qualities with which white women, as the prize objects of the Western world, have been endowed. We have also been defined in less than human terms (Jordon 1969). Our continuing struggle with History began with its "discovery" of us. However, this chapter will be concerned with herstory rather than history. We wish to address questions to the feminist theories that have been developed during the last decade; a decade in which black women have been fighting, in the streets, in the schools, through the courts, inside and outside the wage relation. The significance of these struggles ought to inform the writing of the herstory of women in Britain. It is fundamental to the development of a feminist theory and practice that is meaningful for black women.

Introduction: The Politics of Producing Pleasure CONSTANCE PENLEY, CELINE PARREÑAS SHIMIZU, MIREILLE MILLER-YOUNG, and TRISTAN TAORMINO he Feminist Porn Book is the frst collection to bring together writ- ings by feminist porn producers and feminist porn scholars to Tengage, challenge, and re-imagine pornography. As collaborating editors of this volume, we are three porn professors and one porn direc- tor who have had an energetic dialogue about feminist politics and por- nography for years. In their criticism, feminist opponents of porn cast pornography as a monolithic medium and industry and make sweep- ing generalizations about its production, its workers, its consumers, and its efects on society. Tese antiporn feminists respond to feminist por- nographers and feminist porn professors in several ways. Tey accuse us of deceiving ourselves and others about the nature of pornography; they claim we fail to look critically at any porn and hold up all porn as empowering. More typically, they simply dismiss out of hand our abil- ity or authority to make it or study it. But Te Feminist Porn Book ofers arguments, facts, and histories that cannot be summarily rejected, by providing on-the-ground and well-researched accounts of the politics of producing pleasure. Our agenda is twofold: to explore the emergence and signifcance of a thriving feminist porn movement, and to gather some of the best new feminist scholarship on pornography. By putting our voices into conversation, this book sparks new thinking about the richness and complexity of porn as a genre and an industry in a way that helps us to appreciate the work that feminists in the porn industry are doing, both in the mainstream and on its countercultural edges.

Master of Arts In Human Sexuality Studies by Alicia Marie Jimenez San Francisco, California May 2017 Copyright by Alicia Marie Jimenez 2017 CERTIFICATION OF APPROVAL I certify that I have read How Shock Porn Shaped American Sexual Culture by Alicia Marie Jimenez, and that in my opinion this work meets the criteria for approving a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree Master of Arts in Sexuality Studies at San Francisco State University. Clare Sears Ph.D. Associate Professor HOW SHOCK PORN SHAPED AMERICAN SEXUAL CULTURE Alicia Marie Jimenez San Francisco, California 2017 This paper is about the lasting impact of “2 girls 1 cup” on American sexual identity. I analyze reaction videos focusing on three key themes; Fame, fear, and humor to understand how shock porn and internet culture came together in 2007. Centered around the creation of viral video, internet stardom, and a deep investment in American sexuality I focus very specific moment that allowed for viral stardom and the multitude of reaction videos recorded. The pop culture controversy surrounding “2 girls 1 cup” is part of a long history of abjection and censorship for explicit content.. I outline the widespread preoccupation and fascination with shock porn, as well as its lasting impacts on Americans’ sense of sexual self. I certify that the Abstract is a correct representation of the content of this thesis. • Belle Knox's Rhetorical Construction of Pornography and Feminism
Alter Egos / Alternative Rhetorics: Belle Knox's Rhetorical Construction of Pornography and Feminism By Copyright 2016 Emily Meredith Bosch Submitted to the graduate degree program in Communication Studies and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. ________________________________ Chairperson Dr. Dave Tell ________________________________ Dr. Beth Innocenti ________________________________ Dr. Scott Harris Date Defended: July 14, 2016 ii The Thesis Committee for Emily Meredith Bosch certifies that this is the approved version of the following thesis: Alter Egos / Alternative Rhetorics: Belle Knox's Rhetorical Construction of Pornography and Feminism ________________________________ Chairperson Dr. Dave Tell Date approved: July 18, 2016 iii Abstract In early 2014, Miriam Weeks, more famously known as “the Duke Porn Star” was exposed for acting in pornography to pay her exorbitant Duke tuition bills. Throughout the media saga that followed her outing, Weeks defended her decision to act in pornography, arguing that it was a feminist affirmation of her sexual agency. However, Weeks’s defense of her pornography career is not monolithic, but rather, takes two distinct forms. The first form is characterized by structural or intersectional rhetoric, focused on the contextual factors that implicate the meaning of both pornography and feminism. Contrasting this rhetorical pattern is another that emerged in Weeks’s defense of pornography, characterized by neoliberalism. This rhetoric focused on the affirmation of individualism. Weeks’s neoliberal rhetoric constructed pornography as an openly- accessible option to solve economic shortcomings, regardless of the individual’s social location. Not only is pornography constructed neoliberally, feminism is also constructed neoliberally.

TRACES OF HERSTORY: REINVENTING WOMANHOOD IN THE KATE FANSLER MYSTERY SERIES BY AMANDA CROSS Emma Domínguez-Rué Universitat de Lleida [email protected] Although the American writer and Columbia professor Carolyn Gold Heilbrun (1926-2003) is best known for her best-selling mystery novels, published under the pseudonym of Amanda Cross, she also authored remarkable pieces of non-fiction in which she asserted her long-standing commitment to feminism. Taking Heilbrun’s essays in feminism and literary criticism as a basis and her 1990 novel The Players Come Again as substantiation to my argument, this paper will illustrate the ways in which her detective novels became an instrument to reach a mass audience of female readers who might not have read her theoretical work, but who were perhaps finding it difficult to reach fulfillment as women under patriarchy. My aim is to reveal the extent to which Heilbrun’s seemingly more superficial and much more commercial novels were used a catalyst that informed her feminist principles while vindicating the need to repair women’s historical invisibility. Keywords: Amanda Cross, Carolyn Heilbrun, feminism, detective fiction, female readership “As long as women are isolated one from the other, not allowed to offer other women the most personal accounts of their lives, they will not be part of any narrative of their own” (Heilbrun 1988: 46). Although the American writer and Columbia Professor Carolyn Gold Heilbrun (1926-2003) is best known for her best-selling mystery novels, published under the pseudonym of Amanda Cross, she also authored remarkable pieces of non-fiction in which she asserted her long-standing commitment to feminism.

  • Digital Infringements and the Responsibility of Digital Platforms
COPENHAGEN BUSINESS SCHOOL Digital Infringements and the Responsibility of Digital Platforms by Christian Skettrup A master’s thesis written for the degree of Master of Business Administration and E-business Student ID: 117547 – Character count: 145.888 Supervisor: Nanna Bonde Thylstrup 15.05.2020 1 Abstract Private companies with digital platforms such as Facebook, are using discursive work and strategical positioning to situate themselves in a favorable position in the eyes of their users, advertisers, legislators and the general public. Despite repeatedly facilitating the distribution of some of the worst content that humanity has to offer, the society fails to hold them responsible for their part in the illegal activities. This is partly because most digital platforms are surrounded by a legal framework that exempt them from legal liability when their users conduct illegal activity, and partly because of secretive and opaque practices that makes it difficult to decipher the dynamics of commercial content moderation. With a grounded theory approach, this paper will show how digital platforms are not just neutral technological intermediaries that exist in a vacuum, but rather socio-technical objects that exist in complex political, economical and technological environments, from where they afford their users certain things. In practice they gain a quasi-legislative role, from which they can shape their users’ ability to exercise their fundamental rights. The Umbrella case provides a rare glimpse into the opaque and secretive regulation and moderation practices conducted by Facebook. Practices that makes it possible for digital platforms to implement their self-defined regulation through technical measures. 2 Contents Abstract ............................................................................................................................................................
