WRITTEN QUESTION E-3503/07 by Donata Gottardi (PSE) and Sepp Kusstatscher (Verts/ALE) to the Commission Subject: Quarry and cement production plant at Caprino Veronese and Rivoli Veronese This question is designed to draw the Commission's attention once again to the project to extend the quarry and build a cement factory in the municipality of Caprino Veronese in the province of Verona. The earlier question E-0752/07 explained that the area concerned borders on the site of Community interest SCI No IT3210022 and the special protection area SPA No IT3210041 and that a cement factory would have an extremely adverse effect on the environment and the lives of the local community. The present situation is that a screening study of the environmental impact on the SCI and the SPA carried out by the company that owns the quarry has been submitted to the province of Verona. The screening concluded that there is no need for an environmental impact assessment because 'it is unlikely that there would be significant effects on the Natura 2000 site 'Monte Baldo East' (SCI/SPA IT 3210041)'. Does not the Commission consider that the local authorities involved - municipality, province and region - should demand that an environmental impact assessment be carried out in accordance with Directive 85/337/EEC1 on the assessment of the effects of certain public and private projects on the environment (the EIA Directive, as amended by Directive 97/11/EC2 and by Directive 2003/35/EC3) with regard to this project to extend a quarry and build a cement factory? The project takes place with the cooperation of both municipal and state museums, gathering together all the coins found in the region or belonging to historical collections. The coin finds are published in the multi-volume series of the Ritrovamenti monetali di età romana in Veneto, and the entire numismatic heritage of the museums of Veneto is catalogued in a numismatic computer database that will be available on the regional website. This paper offers some examples of the filing scheme for both the volumes and the database, illustrating research tools that can be used to find a specimen or to process data for further studies. Some results of these projects are also shown in the paper. The publication plan for coin finds and numismatic research in the town of Verona is also illustrated, in particular the forthcoming volume covering the coins found in the historical centre. • Cantine Lenotti Veneto
CANTINE LENOTTI VENETO According to an enological map dated 1906, the name LENOTTI was already known in the past for the production of the classical wine Bardolino. At that time the farm sold wines exclusively in butts or demijohns. In the following years until 1968 the farm constantly increased its production, making wine from local grapes and supplying the numerous bottlers of the neighborhood. Since 1968, the farm has been bottling and selling the wines directly. From 1971 to 2004 the farm and its facilities have undergone several enlargements. The most important of them was carried out in 2004/2005 with the modernization of the vinification, ageing equipement and the bottling line. At present the farm is run by the family Lenotti. All its members are involved in the winery: Father Giancarlo is the oenologist , production manager and facilities supervisor; mother Marina handles sales for the home market; and their son Claudio is export manager. The farm CANTINE LENOTTI is situated in Bardolino, a town in the North of Italy, 25 Km from Verona, on the banks of Lake Garda. Lake Garda, in the province of Verona, is the largest lake in Italy. It is famous all over the world for its mild climate and its natural and artistic beauties that attract a great number of tourists all through the year. The beneficial effect that the lake exerts on the climate and the morphological features of the hills surrounding the banks of the lake have favored the development of a flourishing agriculture based almost exclusively on vine and olive growing.

ITALY Viva Veneto! THE DIVERSE WINE REGION IN NORTHEASTERN ITALY IS WORTH DISCOVERING story and photos by Allison Levine amous for the canals of Venice, renowned for the architecture of Palladio and fabled for star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet, the Veneto region, in north- Feastern Italy, is equally celebrated for the fruit of the vine. Five of the region’s seven provinces produce wine: Verona, Vicenza, Padua, Treviso and Venice. With 25 DOCs and 11 DOCGs, the Veneto is responsible for producing 20% of all Italian DOC wines. A recent trip to the region was spent exploring and learning about the provinces and their wines, ranging from familiar names such as Prosecco, Soave, Valpolicella and Amarone, to lesser-known wines such as Bardolino, Raboso, Tai Rosso, Lison and many others. There are also many international varietals grown in the region, but below we honor some of the indigenous wines in each province. Verona Some of the region’s most recognized wines come from the province of Verona. The Soave area, which includes Soave DOC and two DOCGs (Soave Recioto and Soave Superiore), holds the largest vineyard expanse in Europe, with 6,500 hectares planted. Made with at least 65% Garganega and up to 30% Trebbiano di Soave, Soave is a fragrant, fresh, medium-bodied wine. Vaona et al. BMC Health Services Research (2017) 17:565 DOI 10.1186/s12913-017-2508-5 RESEARCHARTICLE Open Access Data collection of patients with diabetes in family medicine: a study in north-eastern Italy Alberto Vaona1, Franco Del Zotti1, Sandro Girotto1, Claudio Marafetti1, Giulio Rigon1 and Alessandro Marcon2* Abstract Background: Studies on data collection and quality of care in Italian family medicine are lacking. The aim of this study was to assess the completeness of data collection of patients with diabetes in a large sample of family physicians in the province of Verona, Veneto region, a benchmark for the Italian National Health System. Methods: We extracted the data on all the patients with diabetes from the electronic health records of 270 family physicians in 2006 and 2009. We reported the percentage of patients with data recorded for 12 indicators of performance derived from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence diabetes guidelines. Secondarily, we assessed quality of care using the Q-score (the lower the score, the greater the risk of cardiovascular events). Results: Patients with diabetes were 18,507 in 2006 and 20,744 in 2009, and the percentage of patients registered as having diabetes was 4.9% and 5.4% of the total population, respectively (p < 0.001). Data collection improved for all the indicators between 2006 and 2009 but the performance was still low at the end of the study period: patients with no data recorded were 42% in 2006 and 32% in 2009, while patients with data recorded for ≥5 indicators were 9% in 2006 and 17% in 2009.

  • Leave the Flashcards Handout
Few countries of the wine world intimidate us more than Italy. Her complexities of regions, provinces, regulations, and caveats rarely leave the consumer with sure footing and firm grasp of what’s in the bottle. At some point, we make the effort to delve deeper into the mystery; we make lists; we make up mnemonic devices; we make flashcards. The triumphant feeling of rifling through a stack of ‘three by fives’ with minimal mistakes leaves us with the false sense of mastery; we know the answers, right? Then it happens. Someone has a question; time to show them what we’ve learned. A simple query on the geography of Veneto, but for whatever reason, we’re flummoxed. So this is how Deep Blue felt when the Russian won. Perhaps we need to look at what truly lead to our defeat. Did someone just ask the wrong question? Imagine each piece of information we learn about Italian wine is a thread of fabric. The fewer the threads, the looser the fabric, and the greater chance that things may fall through the gaps of our understanding. It’s like trying to catch a bucket of marbles with a deep-sea fishing net. We need to go beyond the relevancy of what’s just inside the bottle, we need to take the time to learn the culture, geography, and historical context of each region, individually, in order to create a fabric of knowledge that can support the weight of our goal. Let’s start with the basics. Italy is divided into 20 regions, which are further divided into provinces, which are then made of communes, or towns/cities.

NEGRAR In Valpolicella, a stone’s throw from Verona INDEX Negrar IN VALPOLICELLA, A STONE’S THROW FROM VERONA p. 2 Valpolicella THE ORIGINS p. 4 VILLAS I p. 6 PARISHES AND CHURCHES II p. 12 STONE AND FOOTPATHS III p. 18 EXCELLENCE OF THE TERRITORY IV p. 24 1 Negrar IN VALPOLICELLA, A STONE’S THROW FROM VERONA Nestled amongst the hilly vineyards and cherry trees and divided by a seasonal watercourse or “progno”, the territory of Negrar extends towards the most easterly part of Valpolicella, the ancient Val Veriacus, which meets up with the Lessini mountains in the north. The name Negrar is believed to derive from the late Latin Nigrariu, meaning “place of the black soil”. The presence of man since prehistoric times is evidenced by the discovery of many man-made artefacts in flint dating from the Paleolithic period and by the “castellieri”, fortified villages strategically positioned on high ground and dating back to the Bronze and Iron Age. In Roman times the territory belonged to the Pagus of the Arusnates, however the finding of an inscription dedicated to the cult of Jupiter and also of a villa confirm that the area was already inhabited during the Roman Empire. View of Valpolicella 2 All over the valley are scattered ancient “torri colombaie”, or dovecotes, which are either isolated or situated within the courtyards or attached to the villas. The municipality includes the villages of Arbizzano, Prun, Fane, Mazzano, Montecchio, Santa Maria, San Peretto, San Vito, Torbe and a series of small localities dotted around the territory.
