There are many activities in America that are illegal, even though they potentially harm only willing participants. These are called consensual crimes. Thomas Jefferson once said, "The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts as are only injurious to others." This would not reflect the moral legislation in today's America. Some consensual crimes in America include: illegal gambling, assisted suicide, prostitution, illegal drug use, jaywalking and wearing safety devices like seat belts. These activities potentially harm only consenting participants, so why has the government made them illegal? Maintaining consensual crimes is a drain If consensual crimes on American society. According to consensual crimes author Peter were legal, it would McWilliams, the government spends more than $29 billion a year just to not only save prevent drug use. This does not include America money, it the enormous amounts of money required to incarcerate consensual crime would help it earn criminals. The Bureau of Justice Statistics says prison costs have been going up more. over the years. In 2001, state correctional facilities cost $15.6 billion, and prison expenditures were another $29.5 billion. According to http://tnjn.com/2008/nov/16/drugs-prostitution-and-gamblin/ Page 1 of 6 TNJN - Drugs, prostitution and gambling could help save the economy 11/18/12 4:52 PM McWilliams, about four to six million people are arrested each year for consensual crimes. Think how much money the country would save if these activities were legal. If consensual crimes were legal, it would not only save America money, it would help it earn more. The Office of National Drug Control Policy estimates that Americans spend about $66 billion dollars a year on just drugs. This money does not usually enter the regular economy, but stays in the black market of drugs. This does not include the money earned from other consensual crimes like illegal gambling and prostitution. If these activities were legal, they could be taxed and the money spent would move into the legitimate market. With a national debt of more than $10 trillion and rising, America could sure use the billions of dollars that would be gained from legalizing consensual crimes. Not only could America tax consensual crimes if they were legal, it could also regulate them. The Food and Drug Administration and other organizations would have to impose health standards, thus making the drugs safer than they would be on the streets. Production of things like recreational drugs could also be made in America, creating countless new jobs and another level to tax. What is the difference between drug use Not only could and smoking? One is legal and the other is not. Why can the government tell a America tax person that they must wear a seat belt while driving? The laws seem to be in consensual crimes if place to promote some sort of national they were legal, it morality. Well, there is no national morality. Every American should be could also regulate allowed to do whatever he or she wants as long as it does not harm the property them. or person of any non-consenting other. One only has to look at history to see the folly of consensual crimes. Alcohol was once made a consensual crime during prohibition. America still drank plenty of booze, but it did get the lovely gift of strong organized crime. Current organized crime is run like a business, and what is the economic base of these organizations: consensual crimes like drugs, prostitution and gambling. Even if one disregards the monetary advantages, the benefit of greatly reducing the power of organized crime seems obvious. America is not a nation of children, and the government is not its parents. As a member of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition I, of course agree with all the drug related comments. In addition, I want to mention that if we legalized and regulated drugs, we would have plenty of money for education and treatment of those addicted. We have people addicted to interactive games, the shopping channel and many other vices. After alcohol prohibition we didn't become a nation of stumbling drunks. Most people use alcohol http://tnjn.com/2008/nov/16/drugs-prostitution-and-gamblin/ Page 2 of 6 TNJN - Drugs, prostitution and gambling could help save the economy 11/18/12 4:52 PM become a nation of stumbling drunks. Most people use alcohol responsibly. In case anyone is looking, where is all the cocaine being consumed in this nation. Right, by the middle class and up. They are running businesses, holding down jobs and raising families. Let's find one lock them up and put their kids in foster care and prevent them from voting. Way to go. 1 △ ▽ • Reply • Share › Wyetwyq • a year ago how much does the US government spend a year on illegal prostitution? 0 △ ▽ • Reply • Share › DrugLord • 3 years ago I think drugs should be legal and those who want to get high so be it, because you can't ever stop the black market to sell drugs regarding the fact that here always will be people who will buy.And prostitution also should be legal and practiced in special places with all the paper works done.If this will happen I bet there wont be anymore killing amoung the prostitution industry if i can call it like that.I dont know if you guys agree with me but I am thinking that if you cant make something disappear why dont you try to get the best of it and try live with it, it is easier to come up with a solution to make bouth parts happy then to make one disappear. ________________________________ Alcohol Detox 0 △ ▽ • Reply • Share › Kristin Barton • 4 years ago The perpetrators are Johns and Pimps. Prostitution is violence against women. Many, many women in prostitution are beaten and raped on a regular basis, and law enforcement only rarely takes crimes against women in prostitution seriously, unless they have to deal with bodies in dumpsters (when it's too late). Just because our laws fail to recognize that Johns perpetrate brutality upon the women who are sexually exploited, it does not follow to reason that prostitution is a victimless crime. Yes, we can argue semantics until the sun comes up, but prostitution is related blatantly to EVERY other social ill that we fight as a society. For verifiable information, see the following. I agree John's are perps, but pimps are low life scumbags. My main points in any of this http://tnjn.com/2008/nov/16/drugs-prostitution-and-gamblin/ Page 3 of 6 TNJN - Drugs, prostitution and gambling could help save the economy 11/18/12 4:52 PM but pimps are low life scumbags. My main points in any of this dialogue are that like drug prohibition and the drug war, the laws against prostitution (the cure) make it much more dangerous than it needs to be. Legalize it and it becomes safer (I point to Europe again). The pimps would be gone, as would the drug dealers if we legalized and regulated drugs. The black market and the criminal element disappear.
