422 WacanaWacana Vol. Vol.18 No. 18 2No. (2017): 2 (2017) 422-454 Bangsawan prampoewan Enlightened Peranakan Chinese women from early twentieth century Java Didi Kwartanada ABSTRACT The end of the nineteenth century witnessed paradox among the Chinese in colonial Java. On one hand, they were prospering economically, but were nonetheless held in contempt by the Dutch, encountered legal discrimination and faced challenges if they wanted to educate their children in European schools. Their marginal position motivated them do their utmost to become “civilized subjects”, on a par with Europeans, but they were also inspired to reinvent their Chinese identity. This contribution will highlight role played by “enlightened” Chinese, the kaoem moeda bangsa Tjina. Central to this movement were the Chinese girls known to the public as bangsawan prampoewan (the noblewomen), who wrote letters the newspaper and creating a gendered public sphere. They also performed western classical music in public. Considering the inspirational impact of bangsawan prampoewan’s enlightening achievements on non-Chinese women, it is appropriate to include them into the narrative of the history of the nation’s women’s movements. It depicts the various cultures and ethnicities that live together in Semarang. However, this city branding is considered insufficient to meet the tourism target. This research aims to develop a new branding for Semarang as a Cinematic City. This concept is derived from the success of several cities which famous as shooting locations, for example Oxford in England, Seoul in South Korea, and New Zealand as the filming sites of The Lord of the Rings. The main aim of this research is to map out the potential locations for Semarang’s new branding as a Cinematic City. This research is conducted for three popular movies: Gie, Ayat-Ayat Cinta and Soekarno which those movies used Semarang City as the major filming sites. The result found there are three separated areas in Semarang that can be built as the main points of the city branding. Specifically located in the Old Town District there are Srigunting Park, State Financial Building, Cockfighting site, Berok Bridge, Blenduk Church, Jakarta Lloyd Building, and Berok River. In total, there are nine locations that can be developed as a tourism hub which served as a brand attributes of the effort to construct a Semarang as a Cinematic City. -

benedict anderson EXIT SUHARTO Obituary for a Mediocre Tyrant n 1971, the indonesian presidential machine informed the public that Suharto and his wife were planning a mauso- leum for themselves on a spur of Mount Lawu, the dormant, 3,000m sacred volcano that lies to the east of the ci-devant royal IJavanese city of Surakarta.1 The site had been carefully chosen, respect- fully situated some metres below the early tombs of the Mangkunegaran dynasty—the second most insignificant of the four small Central Java principalities instituted by colonial authority in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Mrs Tien Suharto—by then already quietly mocked as Tientje (Ten Per Cent)—claimed some connection with the little dynasty which had barely survived the revolution of 1945–49. For Suharto, who always insisted that he was of simple peasant stock, but was rumoured to be the illegitimate son of a Chinese tycoon, the site represented a social step up; and a normal one, since hypergamy was common among the army officer corps in the 1940s and after, and families were traditionally uxorilocal. Still, the construction of this expensive, unprecedented mau- soleum for the future dead had something creepy about it, since Suharto himself was a healthy 50-year-old at the time. I visited Surakarta in the spring of 1972, after the Suharto government had discovered that I had entered the country by roundabout methods and had informed me that I would be deported. After some negotiations, I was allowed two weeks to wind up my affairs and say farewell to friends. -

Indonesian Historiography in the New Order (274 pp.) Director of Thesis: William H. Frederick This thesis discusses one central problem: What happened to Indonesian historiography in the New Order (1966-98)? To analyze the problem, the author studies the connections between the major themes in his intellectual autobiography and those in the metahistory of the regime. Proceeding in chronological and thematic manner, the thesis comes in three parts. Part One presents the author’s intellectual autobiography, which illustrates how, as a member of the generation of people who grew up in the New Order, he came into contact with history. Part Two examines the genealogy of and the major issues at stake in the post-New Order controversy over the rectification of history. Part Three ends with several concluding observations. First, the historiographical engineering that the New Order committed was not effective. Second, the regime created the tools for people to criticize itself, which shows that it misunderstood its own society. Third, Indonesian contemporary culture is such that people abhor the idea that there is no single truth. -

BAB IV KIPRAH ABDUL RAHMAN BASWEDAN DALAM MEMPERJUANGAN KEMERDEKAAN INDONESIA TAHUN 1934- 1947 A. Peran Abdul Rahman Baswedan Pada Masa Kolonial Belanda Tahun 19341942 Abdul Rahman Baswedan lahir ditengah-tengah masyarakat yang diisolasi oleh pemerintah kolonial, namun pergaulan yang ia rintis jauh melampaui batas-batas etnisnya, Ia bergaul erat dengan kawan-kawan dari golongan Tionghoa, terutama dengan sesama aktifis. Abdul Rahman Baswedan berkawan baik dengan Liem Koen Hian pendiri Partai Tionghoa Indonesia (PTI) yang kemudian menginspirasinya untuk mendirikan Partai Arab Indonesia (PAI) suatu saat nanti. Sejak muda A.R. Baswedan kerap berkomunikasi dengan siapapun dari kalangan manapun karena ia tidak pernah membeda-bedakan seseorangan untuk diajak berteman dan 91 92 bertukar pikiran.1Abdul Rahman Baswedan banyak belajar tentang keindonesiaan semenjak berkenalan dengan tokoh nasionals yaitu Dr. Sutomo. Di tambah lagi dengan mondoknya dalam keluarga tokoh Partai Syarikat Islam (PSI) Soerowijono.2 Sebelum abad ke-20, lingkungan kehidupan untuk masing-masing etnis dibedakan satu dengan yang lainnya oleh pemerintah kolonial Belanda yang menerapkan kebijakan politik segregasi yaitu membagi penduduk menjadi tiga golongan berdasarkan rasnya, kelas paling rendah adalah Inheemschen (atau Inlender), golongan bumi putra (pribumi) ; diatasnya adalah Vreemede Oosterlingen (Timur Asing ) yang meliputi suku Arab ,Tionghoa, India, dan yang paling tinggi adalah golongan warga kulit putih yaitu Eropa, Amerika, Jepang. DAWA PENDAHULUAN Pada 1995, Institut DIAN/Interfidei menerbitkan sebuah buku yang sebagian besar berisi makalah yang didiskusikan dalam seminar bertajuk “Konfusianisme di Indonesia,” yang diadakan pada tahun sebelumnya oleh Institut DIAN/Interfidei juga. Judul buku itu adalah Konfusianisme di Indonesia: Pergulatan Mencari Jati Diri.1 Buku ini memang khusus bicara soal Konfusianisme di Indonesia. Namun, percakapan tentang Konfusianisme tidak bisa dilepaskan dari percakapan tentang orang-orang Tionghoa, yang sebagian besar memeluk keyakinan ini. Karena itu, bicara tentang pergulatan Konfusianisme yang mencari jati dirinya di bumi Indonesia tidak bisa tidak juga menyentuh para pemeluknya, orang-orang Tionghoa. Buku itu hanya salah satu dari sekian banyak buku yang pernah ditulis tentang orang-orang Tionghoa. Sejak terbitnya buku itu, persoalan siapa dan di mana orang Tionghoa dalam kehidupan berbangsa dan bernegara Indonesia pun tidak pernah selesai dibicarakan. His mother is Ho Kiem Hoa Nio (or Lucy Ho), the seventh wife of Oei Tiong Ham. Oei Tjong Tjay received primary education in the Netherlands, and secondary and university education in Switzerland. He then went to the United States for graduate study in economics. He returned to Indonesia in 1948, and managed its operation for several years after his half-brother Oei Tjong Hauw died in January 1950. He left Indonesia in late 1957, but headed its board of directors until 1961 when the Indonesian government took over the Indonesian operation of Oei Tiong Ham Concern. In the next few years, he organized a legal defense to fight the confiscation in Indonesia. He now heads the Kian Gwan group in the Netherlands and lives in Switzerland. Interview 1. CHAPTER EIGHT THE OEI TIONG HAM CONCERN AND THE CHANGE OF REGIMES IN INDONESIA, 1931–1950 Peter Post Introduction The central decades of the twentieth century posed tremendous chal- lenges for ethnic Chinese family firms in Indonesia. During this period the late colonial Dutch regime was forcefully replaced by a short-lived but highly significant Japanese military administration and followed by the independent Republic of Indonesia. Each of the regime transi- tions was accompanied by widespread anti-Chinese violence resulting in many deaths and great material damage to Chinese shops, trading firms, manufacturing industries, and agricultural enterprises. Since each of the regimes professed different economic policies and created highly different sets of economic institutions (partly because of the changes in the global economic environment, partly because of different ideolo- gies), ethnic Chinese firms were forced to adapt and adjust themselves constantly in order to sustain their businesses. Some were successful, others failed. The mechanisms underlying the various Chinese busi- ness responses towards the enforced institutional changes during these crucial decades in Indonesian history have so far hardly been studied, let alone understood. The major reason seems to be that most writ- ings on the ethnic Chinese experience during the Japanese military administration and the Sukarno regime have used political frameworks, rather than business perspectives. The powerful nation-state paradigm fitted the indigenous bourgeoisies and U.S. hegemonizing efforts in the region. In the post-war debates on modernization, development and nation-state building simplified dichotomic frameworks ruled the dice, and within these frameworks no need was felt to delve deeper into the experiences of the ethnic Chinese business elites, since they were simply seen as collaborators and profiteers of an unjust colonial order and exploiters of the indigenous populations, actually preventing their emancipation rather than supporting it. -

25 BAB II PERAN SERTA ETNIS TIONGHOA PADA MASA REVOLUSI KEMERDEKAAN REPUBLIK INDONESIA A. Masuknya Etnis Tionghoa di Indonesia Menurut Kong Yuanzhi, Etnis Tionghoa1 diketahui telah lama datang ke Indonesia sejak berabad-abad yang lalu.2 Kedatangan mereka mempunyai tujuan, yaitu untuk keperluan berdagang, membuka hubungan politik, mengembangkan 1 Dalam skripsi ini digunakan istilah Tionghoa bukan Cina atau China, dengan mengacu pada keputusan Presiden Nomor 12 Tahun 2014 tentang Pencabutan Surat Edaran Presidium Kabinet Ampera Nomor SE- 06/Pred.Kab/6/1967 tanggal 28 Juni 1967. Termasuk penulisan Kampung Cina dirubah menjadi Kampung Tionghoa. 2 Kong Yuanzhi menyimpulkan bahwa suatu kemungkinan besar bagian utama bangsa Indonesia berasal dari selatan Asia, sedangkan bukan mustahil daerah sekitar Yunnan, Tiongkok Barat Daya, merupakan satu tempat bertolak bagi orang Melayu purba yang menyebar dalam jumlah besar ke selatan, sampai di Kepulauan Nusantara sehingga terjalinlah hubungan darah antara bangsa Tionghoa dengan bangsa Indonesia. Bukti-bukti sejarah yang berupa benda-benda dan catatan-catatan dari Tiongkok menerangkan bahwa adanya kontak atau hubungan antara kerajaan-kerajaan yang ada di Nusantara dengan dinasti-dinasti yang berkuasa di Tiongkok .
