  • Changing Settlements in a Hungarian Forest in the Middle Ages1
PILIS: CHANGING SETTLEMENTS IN A HUNGARIAN FOREST IN THE MIDDLE AGES1 Péter Szabó Pilis is a still visible forest in the heart of historical Hungary, covering an area of approximately fifty-five thousand hectares. In the Middle Ages, it was surrounded by the most significant lay and ecclesiastical centres of the Hungarian Kingdom: Esztergom, where one of the archbishops of Hungary is based; Buda, the most important royal centre from the thirteenth century on; and Visegrád, a royal castle of primary importance. Including a fourth town (Fehérvár) at a relatively small distance, the territory was called medium regni in the Middle Ages. Although the history of the four towns has been studied often and from many points of view,2 not much has been said about the territory that lies among them: the Pilis forest. The region comprises two separate mountains, one is called Pilis, the other one Visegrádi mountain. Nevertheless, the traditional usage is to refer to the whole area as Pilis. To the north and east, its boundary is the Danube, whereas to the southwest the border-line is the valley of Pilisvörösvár, enclosing a triangularly shaped territory, with the three castles on the edges. Before one attempts to examine the settlement structure of Pilis, some preliminary remarks on the history of the area are inevitable. The most important fact is that Pilis was a royal forest all through the Middle Ages, which means that it was under deliberate protection and control of the royal family, and also served as a most favoured hunting preserve. The second significant element in the history of the region was the strong presence of two monastic orders: the Cistercians and the Paulines, with one and three monasteries, respectively.

  • Land Reform and the Hungarian Peasantry C. 1700-1848
Land Reform and the Hungarian Peasantry c. 1700-1848 Robert William Benjamin Gray UCL Thesis submitted for a PhD in History, 2009 1 I, Robert William Benjamin Gray, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 25th September 2009 2 Abstract This thesis examines the nature of lord-peasant relations in the final stages of Hungarian seigneurialism, dating roughly from 1700 to the emancipation of the peasantry in 1848. It investigates how the terms of the peasants’ relations with their lords, especially their obligations and the rights to the land they farmed, were established, both through written law and by customary practice. It also examines how the reforms of this period sought to redefine lord-peasant relations and rights to landed property. Under Maria Theresa land reform had been a means to protect the rural status quo and the livelihood of the peasantry: by the end of the 1840s it had become an integral part of a liberal reform movement aiming at the complete overhaul of Hungary’s ‘feudal’ social and economic system. In this period the status of the peasantry underpinned all attempts at reform. All reforms were claimed to be in the best interests of the peasantry, yet none stemmed from the peasants themselves. Conversely, the peasantry had means to voice their grievances through petitions and recourse to the courts, and took the opportunity provided by the reforms to reassert their rights and renegotiate the terms of their relations to their landlords.

Statement of Significance The Medieval Royal Seat and Forest at Visegrád is a unique complex of a medieval royal seat: castles, palace, garden, Franciscan friary and a Royal Forest, all composing elements of this outstanding cultural landscape, which was formed from the eleventh to the fifteenth centuries. The site is one of the last surviving examples of a once typical combination of a royal seat and hunting ground. Visegrád, some monuments of which are the first products of Renaissance outside Italy, is also a symbol of medieval co-operation among the kingdoms of Central Europe, providing a constant source of inspiration for the repeatedly interrupted modernisation of the region. 1.2. Role of the Proposed World Heritage Status for the Site The area of the proposed World Heritage site is under multiple protection.
