One of Sarajevo’s best-kept secrets is the quality of the coffee served in the city. Its population lives on caffeine, many having coffee up to five times a day. The traditional way of serving the real Bosnian coffee, the Bosanska kafa, looks very much like the Arabic version, or the Turkish, where raw beans are first roasted then ground into a fine powder using a hand grinder. Served on copper pots called dzezva, boiling water is added to the powder. The dzezva is put on a tray with a small ceramic cup called fildzan, white sugar cubes, and some pastries, most notably the rahat lokum (don’t call it Turkish delight, even if it looks and tastes just like it, after all, we are in Bosnia, not Anatolia).

SARAJEVO COOKBOOK Sarajevo is the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is its administrative, economic, cultural and educational center. The city center of Sarajevo is a unit of local self-governance, which consists of four municipalities: Old City, Center, New City and New Sarajevo. Sarajevo is the place where the East meets the West. The city is famous for its traditional religious diversity, with adherents of Islam, Orthodoxy, Catholicism and Judaism coexisting there for centuries. Due to its long and rich history of religious and cultural variety, Sarajevo is often called "Jerusalem of Europe". Nestled within the greater Sarajevo valley, it is surrounded by the Dinaric Alps and situated along the Miljacka River in the heart of Southeastern Europe and the Balkans. Because of its geographical position, Sarajevo was chosen to host the 1984 Winter Olympic Games. Though settled from the prehistoric times, the modern city arose as an Ottoman stronghold in the 15th century. Bosnia and Herzegovina was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1878 until 1914, when the assassination of the Archduke in Sarajevo sparked the World War I. Sarajevo was also the first city in Europe and the second city in the world to have a full-time operational electric tram network running through the city, the first being San Francisco. The modern history of the city is no less interesting and turbulent, so everybody is invited to take a walk through Sarajevo’s streets and capture the atmosphere of this fascinating town. Sarajevo has mild continental climate. It is located in Central European Time Zone (GMT +1).

Sarajevo had to be the place, June 28th 2014 the date, for the start of the European commemorations for the centenary of the First World War. Driven by this conviction, we, together with the producer Fabienne Servan- Schreiber, set off for Sarajevo. Once there, we very soon met with some of our companions in this extraordinary adventure: the then mayor of Sarajevo, Alija Behmen, to whom we would like to pay tribute, Francis Bueb and the group of people at the Centre André Malraux, brothers to the city in its darkest hours, the Sarajevo Film Festival and the Sarajevo Jazz Fest, both embody Sarajevo’s cultural excellence. The French Ambassador in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Roland Gilles, convinced Europe to join us on this adventure. Sarajevo had long aspired to the honor of being European Capital of Culture. The year of commemoration of the outset of the First World War fulfilled this ambition, at last. Peter Sorensen, the special representative of the European Union in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Pierre Mirel, then director of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Enlargement, immediately believed in the project. Sarajevo may not be European Capital of Culture in 2014, but for a few weeks around the symbolic date of June 28th it will be the “Heart of Europe”.

The Siege and Urbicide of Leningrad and Sarajevo: Testimonies from Lidiya Ginzburg and Dževad Karahasan2
Giustina Selvelli1 (PhD Candidate, University Ca' Foscari of Venice) THE SIEGE AND URBICIDE OF LENINGRAD AND SARAJEVO: TESTIMONIES FROM LIDIYA GINZBURG AND DŽEVAD KARAHASAN2 In this paper I will present a comparison between the experience of the siege of Leningrad and the one of Sarajevo through the analysis of the works of two writers: Lidiya Ginzburg's “Zapiski blokadnogo cheloveka” and Dževad Karahasan's “Dnevnik Selidbe”. My contribution will focus in particular on the topic of the relationship between the citizens and their city, viewed as an attempt to overcome the opposition between individualism and commonality and the manifestation of the collective resistence to practices of “urbicide”. The latter will be treated as an issue of crucial importance in understanding the symbolic dimension of city's destructions. In their works, both of the authors depict with accuracy the agony of the isolated city, trying to find out what remains of the human being and his environment after complete destruction and disillusion. Through the analysis of these works on the siege we can identify the traces of a humanity that does not surrender, continuing to carry on essential cultural and social values notwithstanding the extreme war circumstances. From this point of view, the siege reveals itself as an incommensurable experience allowing both of the authors to reflect on the the fundamental principle of “staying human”. The evidence here set forth, where space does not permit of lengthy quotation from the sustaining documents which are mentioned, is the result of our eye-witness investigation; it is not second-hand. There was available to us an enormous amount of corroborating evidence, much of it from Americans and others who have lived in Yugoslavia for months or years, which we have not included in this report. The material on the status of religious life in Yugo slavia in no case came from the government but from personal interviews with leaders of churches in the four republics we visited-Roman Catholic, Serbian Orthodox, Jewish, Moslem and Protestant. Since we are all clergymen, and three of us editors of religious journals, it was both natural and sound procedure for us to seek our information on religious affairs from leaders in the field of religious life. We must emphasize in reference to what we say briefly about the case of Archbishop Stepinac that our sources of information were Roman Catholic-the most incriminating documents were the files of the Roman Catholic diocesan news papers, concerning the authenticity of which there can be no question-and while we found division of opinion among Catholics as to his conviction, many Catholic leaders frankly admitted the truth of the background data.
