CCC Newsletter # 03-14

Well happy March Everyone!

I hope you're all enjoying your classics as much as I'm enjoying mine. I got one of mine out for the first time since last Summer! Started it up without much trouble, but after driving it for a bit remembered why I put it away. Really need to work on the shift linkage so I can figure out what gear I might be going into. Oh well, that's why we love our classics . . . because they always need us.

Speaking of “needing”, here are several classics that are looking for a new home: • 1987 Chevy Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe that the seller is asking $6,000.00 for; and . . . • 2000 Pontiac Firebird; 6 cylinder convertible with 27K original miles. Owner believes this may be a “one of a kind” car. Asking $22K. Both cars are featured here with pictures: www.californiacarclubs.com/forsale.htm Check them out!

And now how about some automotive trivia! This one is simple, and straight forward; • What is a “Trafficator”?

And the bonus trivia question; • What American car was the first to offer factory installed turn signals as standard equipment?

And now on to what you're waiting for . . . the upcoming shows!

Trivia Answer! • OK, a “trafficator” is . . . an early version of the turn signal. It was a mechanical arm that would raise and point the direction of the drivers intended turn; much like a semaphore flag. They were usually mounted high on the door pillar. Used by the railroad industry as early as 1890, they found their way into cars in the early 1900's.

Bonus Trivia Answer: • It wasn't Ford, nor Cadillac or Packard. It was the Buick! Introduced in 1939 as a safety feature, the new-fangled feature was advertised as the "Flash-Way Directional Signal" operated from a switch on the new "Handi-shift" column-mounted shifter. But the flashing signals only operated on the rear lights; so in 1940 Buick enhanced the directional indicators by extending the signals to front lights and adding a self-canceling mechanism.

My wife has been working hard staring at license plates, so now let's take a look at what she's come up with. By the way, she really appreciates all the submissions she's getting from some of you, so please keep it up! And if you see one of interest, please let her know.

OK, now on to . . .

March 2014

Since we’re heading toward Spring, I decided to list license plates this month that reflect going to the lake, the mountains, Yosemite, etc. and activities that happen there. My interpretations are also listed. I don’t make any of these up – I just look at plates all the time while driving!

MNTN LDY (mountain lady) Yosemite Plates: MTMN (mountain man) LTSGOHK (let’s go hike) MTVIEWS (mountain views) YOCMT SM (Yosemite Sam) MTN LIVN (mountain living) AF DOME (half dome) CRZHNTR (crazy hunter) BASSSLK (Bass Lake) 2DCABIN (to the cabin) Lake Tahoe: NTR LVRS (nature lovers) OH TAHOE STELHED (fisherman) 2LKTAHO MTN ♥ER (mountain lover) UP4TAHO 1H2OSKI (1 water ski)

Thanks to some members of our car club, Pontiacs of Central California, I have been receiving vanity plate “donations” for this monthly column. These are from Jack Fusari:

BLONGKA (Blanca, Spanish for “white” – guess it was a white car) FROSTYS (on a Mercedes) PKRS NO1 (I interpret this as Packers #1) POR DADY (poor daddy) HATS 4 ME (on a Range Rover) DAHHHHH (yes, in German – on a VW GTI)

Other readers sent:

FRID RYC (fried rice – on a Honda Civic) so clever, right? R 6 T V (our ’65 – on a ’65 Mustang) I R ONRY (I are ornery)

Please send any crazy signs, vanity plates or other fun stuff to me at [email protected] Drive safe.

♥ “Someday is not a day of the week.” ♥ – from a church sign Sometimes I get questioned why some show listings are so long . . . “I sent my flyer in but only got a few lines about it posted” . . . I'm sure some of you are guessing the reason already. The nice long, descriptive posts you see and read were sent in that way. That is the big advantage in writing it yourself! The obvious benefit is this allows you to say what you think is important regarding your show. If the information is sent is as a flyer only, your fate is dependent on how much spare time I have at the moment I'm working on yours. I'm also asked why I don't set up an automated system so you can post them directly yourself. I have several reasons . . . foremost I want to read them for “family friendly” content before they are posted, and I also like to try and correct any obvious typos that might be lurking. So feel free to type away when you submit your next show, it is greatly appreciated!

Well I guess that's it for now. Don't forget, if you do not wish to be on this distribution list, simply bounce the newsletter back with “remove” in the subject line. You will be notified of your removal and that's it.

On the other hand, please feel free to pass this newsletter on to all your gear head friends. If they wish their own, they can send me an email with “add me” in the subject line, and they're in!

As a reminder, I do not share, loan, sell or otherwise give this list to anyone! (And yes, I've been asked several times.) As I've done in the past, I will pass on information they may have that I feel is of sufficient interest to you.

With all that said, please send me all your show information you want posted! This newsletter is nothing without your support. Don't forget that the website also lists clubs (www.californiacarclubs.com/list.htm) so make sure your club is listed. If you have a website that is of interest to us gear heads, let me know so it can be listed too: www.californiacarclubs.com/links.htm.

So that's it, have a great March driving your classic!
