MARCH 2020 | ThunderRoadsFlorida.com | 5 PONY TALES By LuLu WOW I can’t believe it has been 14 Bike Weeks since our very first edition of Thunder Roads Florida!!! What an insane ride this life of motorcycling has been! I reflect on all the great people I have met and particularly those who no longer ride this Earth with us, and I am in awe at the sheer number of friends this magazine has graced me with. For those of you who have known me since the first edition I want you to know I still miss Bull and his zest for life. No one loved the lifestyle of two wheels more. I only wish he could have seen what the magazine has become. I must thank Bull when I cross over to the other side for all the friends this magazine created. It took T. J. at the reins to make it financially sound…I must admit I wasn’t good at the financial part of the business as I simply couldn’t seem to do it all by myself. Writing, photography, events, etc. were a piece of cake but sales, billing, collections, and distribution were a struggle for me. With T. J.’s help we were finally named Publishers of the Year! For those of you visiting our state for Bike Week please remember we have lots of critters on our roads and it seems they are getting braver each year…deer and bears are often racing across the highways even during the day. The police are another critter to watch for…I say that lovingly as one of my favorite nephews is a police officer. But they are only doing their job when they pull you over for running with blue or red LED lights, no sunglasses, loud pipes, ape hangers over the height limit, etc., but these reasons for pulling you over can lead to a DUI if you over imbibe…so drink responsibly and don’t ruin your trip. Drinking responsibly also means drink plenty of water. And finally, as I always close my Pony Tales, wear sunscreen. Even when it isn’t out the sun can fry your skin and since we don’t have anything to shield us while we ride the Sunshine State, sunscreen is a must. We have lots of new ad clients who are responsible for us being able to bring this monthly free magazine to you so please use the Motorcycle Friendly Directory as you travel the state and spend your money with those who truly are Motorcycle Friendly!!! Visit the Bayer tent at Iron Horse or Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona H-D and thank them for the free samples, sign up for information at the Concealed Carry booth too and as I already mentioned don’t forget your sunscreen! The Tarmac Cowboys: An Ethnographic Study of the Cultural World of Boy Racers By Zannagh Hatton Abstract Through my varying degrees of engagement with the street car culture which existed around the area where 1 lived in Comwall, 1 had become aware of the extent to which cars played an important role and represented the norm of daily discourse, entered into by others, and particularly young men. Yet as one of the dominant forms of mobility, the car appears to have been a neglected topic within sociology, cultural studies and related disciplines. Furthermore, 1 was unable to find a great deal of academic literature on the combined subjects of young men and motorcars, and in particular how consumption of the car and car related activities are used by some young men to express self-definition. This ethnographic study which has examined the cultural world of boy racers aged between 17 and 24 years is the result of my enquiry.

  • Day 2 We Met up with Hughy, a Friend of Randy and Carols from Washington in AM Before We Left Pendleton
Rat Bike Run st th August 1 thru September 4 2003 As seen through the Authors eyes; MILO ANDERSON Day1 August 1, 2003. I, Milo Anderson, my wife Joni Anderson, Randy and Carol Fergusen, Mitch and Jan Myers, Gino Benidetti, Bonnie Fender and Gordon Spezza left on our trip to Sturgis South Dakota. I was on my 1970 Shovelhead Rat Bike that I’ve been riding for 28 years. Joni was on her 2003 Heritage Soft Tail Classic. Randy was on his 2002 Soft Tail Deuce. Carol was on her 1999 Road King Classic. Gino and Bonnie were on his ’90 Springer. Mitch and Jan were on his ’95 Soft Tail and Gordon was driving the C & R Stripping truck and trailer with his 1978 Low Rider in back. We made it to Pendleton OR for the first day. It was also to be the day of the closest near tragedy of the whole trip. Joni, my wife, was going through a sweeping left hand corner with the river on the right side of the road. Her foot board bracket was scraping the asphalt in the middle of the turn. She looked down to see what was scrapping and when she looked up again she went straight off the road and into gravel. It was pretty scary for her, as well as for Mitch and Jan who were riding behind her. At approximately 40 MPH she had the back wheel try to slide out in the gravel and was sliding sideways. Joni remembers what we have told her in the past.

  • Introduction to R&C Database Compilation & Index
Introduction to R&C Database Compilation & Index I have a long history and fondness for Rod & Custom magazine. This is the first magazine I purchased at age 10, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I often refer back to my collection, but find it hard to quickly lay my hands on a given article. This is for fellow HAMB members who share a love for this little magazine. This Index covers Rod & Custom Magazine from May 1953 through May 1974. I stopped at 1974 since R&C went out of print then. R&C was restarted in December 1988 and lasted until October 2014. This index is created for general reference, technical reference, research, tracing automobile histories, and genealogy. I have attempted to use a consistent categorization or article grouping scheme across all 20+ years, even though editors or previous compilations may not have used this convention. This index contains the following specific information: Title of each article along with a descriptive supplement such as club affiliation, noted customizers, past owners, professions, etc. The author’s and/or photographer’s name where space allowed. Featured vehicle year, make, model, & engine and/or engine displacement where available or where space allowed. Vehicle owner name, city and state. Where the country is other than the United States, I listed the country Product manufacturer name, city and state. Address may be included if space allowed. The month and page number of each feature article or photograph. The index is sorted by year, and a title at the top of each page indicates which year.

CCC Newsletter # 03-14 Well happy March Everyone! I hope you're all enjoying your classics as much as I'm enjoying mine. I got one of mine out for the first time since last Summer! Started it up without much trouble, but after driving it for a bit remembered why I put it away. Really need to work on the shift linkage so I can figure out what gear I might be going into. Oh well, that's why we love our classics . because they always need us. Speaking of “needing”, here are several classics that are looking for a new home: • 1987 Chevy Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe that the seller is asking $6,000.00 for; and . • 2000 Pontiac Firebird; 6 cylinder convertible with 27K original miles. Owner believes this may be a “one of a kind” car. Asking $22K. Both cars are featured here with pictures: www.californiacarclubs.com/forsale.htm Check them out! And now how about some automotive trivia! This one is simple, and straight forward; • What is a “Trafficator”? And the bonus trivia question; • What American car was the first to offer factory installed turn signals as standard equipment? And now on to what you're waiting for . the upcoming shows! March 2014: 1st: • Bakersfield, CA: Super Cruise Car Show; Hosted by the Bakersfield Car Club Council and the Society for Disabled Children. My godfather, Jim O'Brien, called him “kind-of a hippie and kind-of a redneck,” and this project is kind-of a biography of him. Acknowledgements Thank you to Jeff Meikle for taking me on as an advisee knowing full well that I would be a shameful laggard, for employing me as his T.A. and providing inspiration with his brilliant lectures, for letting me pursue this demented project as I envisioned it and pushing me in the right direction when I needed it, and for his patient efforts as an editor.
