2 3 Harley-Davidson was born in a wooden shed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1903. Five years later, our first police motorcycle was delivered. Our unwavering commitment has kept us at the front of the motorcade ever since. Today, the vast majority of motor units in the United States ride Harley-Davidson® Police motorcycles. We consider it an honor to serve people who make enormous contributions—and sometimes sacrifices—to keep the rest of us safe and free. WE ANSWERED THE CALL IN 1908. AND WE STILL HEAR IT TODAy. To a motor officer, the call of duty is so powerful. It can echo across generations. Around the country, there are countless examples of motor officers who have passed the torch to their children, who sometimes pass it on to yet another generation, creating a family legacy of duty, honor, and service. We approach our work with the same kind of passion they do, a passion that elevates our job into a calling too. 4 5 That first order for police motorcycles in 1908 went to the Detroit Police Department. The DPD Motor Unit is steeped in traditions, at least two of which carry on to this day. One of them is that the uniform of a motor officer includes a leather bow tie. The other is that the uniform of a motor officer also includes a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle. THE ONLy POLICE MOTORCyCLE OF HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE. By the late 1920s, Harley-Davidson® motorcycles were a familiar sight in America, performing important work for more than 3,000 police departments and government agencies.

The Tarmac Cowboys: An Ethnographic Study of the Cultural World of Boy Racers By Zannagh Hatton Abstract Through my varying degrees of engagement with the street car culture which existed around the area where 1 lived in Comwall, 1 had become aware of the extent to which cars played an important role and represented the norm of daily discourse, entered into by others, and particularly young men. Yet as one of the dominant forms of mobility, the car appears to have been a neglected topic within sociology, cultural studies and related disciplines. Furthermore, 1 was unable to find a great deal of academic literature on the combined subjects of young men and motorcars, and in particular how consumption of the car and car related activities are used by some young men to express self-definition. This ethnographic study which has examined the cultural world of boy racers aged between 17 and 24 years is the result of my enquiry.

Performing Organization Monash University Accident Research Centre Wellington Road Clayton Victoria 3168 Sponsoring Organization Victorian Health Promotion Foundation 333 Drummond Street Carlton Victoria 3053 Abstract This study is an exploratory one, aiming to assess the magnitude of the problem of motorcycle-related injuries (both on- and off-road) to children and adolescents, to characterise the crashes and resulting injuries and to suggest possible countermeasures. Analyses of hospital admission data (Victorian Inpatient Minimum Dataset - VlMD) showed that Police-reported data account for only 80.4% for 18-20 year old motorcyclists involved in on-road crashes and only 37.4% for under 18 year olds in on-road crashes. On- and off-road crashes were each responsible for a total of more than 4000 hospital bed-days in Victoria in 1991. This comprised 2822 and 1282 hospital bed-days for on- and off-road injuries, respectively. From information derived from the Victorian Injury Surveillance System (VlSS) and the VlMD, it is estimated that motorcycle injuries to riders and passengers aged under 21 result in 1868 presentations to Emergency Departments in Victorian hospitals per year.

Rat Bike Run st th August 1 thru September 4 2003 As seen through the Authors eyes; MILO ANDERSON Day1 August 1, 2003. I, Milo Anderson, my wife Joni Anderson, Randy and Carol Fergusen, Mitch and Jan Myers, Gino Benidetti, Bonnie Fender and Gordon Spezza left on our trip to Sturgis South Dakota. I was on my 1970 Shovelhead Rat Bike that I’ve been riding for 28 years. Joni was on her 2003 Heritage Soft Tail Classic. Randy was on his 2002 Soft Tail Deuce. Carol was on her 1999 Road King Classic. Gino and Bonnie were on his ’90 Springer. Mitch and Jan were on his ’95 Soft Tail and Gordon was driving the C & R Stripping truck and trailer with his 1978 Low Rider in back. We made it to Pendleton OR for the first day. It was also to be the day of the closest near tragedy of the whole trip. Joni, my wife, was going through a sweeping left hand corner with the river on the right side of the road. Her foot board bracket was scraping the asphalt in the middle of the turn. She looked down to see what was scrapping and when she looked up again she went straight off the road and into gravel. It was pretty scary for her, as well as for Mitch and Jan who were riding behind her. At approximately 40 MPH she had the back wheel try to slide out in the gravel and was sliding sideways. Joni remembers what we have told her in the past.

Understanding the challenge 6 2.1 Motorcycle collisions and casualties 6 2.2 Motorcycling in London 6 3. Understanding the causes 8 3.1 Motorcycle risk in London in context: who, where, when? 8 3.2 Motorcycle collisions: why? 12 3.3 In depth analysis of police motorcycle fatality investigations 13 3.4 Personal protective equipment 15 3.5 London’s motorcycling population 16 4. Actions to reduce motorcyclist injuries in London 18 5. Monitoring outcomes 26 2 Foreword Many Londoners choose motorcycles to get around our city as they provide flexible personal mobility. Yet motorcyclists face the highest levels of collision risk on our roads – a situation we are determined to improve. London has a long history of successful initiatives to increase the safety of motorcyclists. Since 2000 the number of motorcyclists killed in the Capital has been halved. In 2013 the Mayor and Transport for London (TfL) published Safe Streets for London: an ambitious and comprehensive plan to reduce further the number of people killed or seriously injured in London by 40 per cent by 2020. To achieve this target, and work towards the ambition of a future with roads free from death and serious injury, this Motorcycle Safety Action Plan, a first for London, sets out 29 actions. These cover many areas, including an ambitious programme of engineering, education and enforcement, together with increased investment in road safety. Collaborative working will be critical to success. We have already put this at the centre of our approach with the establishment of the Road Safety Steering Group for London, as well as a Motorcycle Safety Working Group to ensure that we are working with partners across the Capital to make motorcycling safer.

  • Introduction to R&C Database Compilation & Index
Introduction to R&C Database Compilation & Index I have a long history and fondness for Rod & Custom magazine. This is the first magazine I purchased at age 10, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I often refer back to my collection, but find it hard to quickly lay my hands on a given article. This is for fellow HAMB members who share a love for this little magazine. This Index covers Rod & Custom Magazine from May 1953 through May 1974. I stopped at 1974 since R&C went out of print then. R&C was restarted in December 1988 and lasted until October 2014. This index is created for general reference, technical reference, research, tracing automobile histories, and genealogy. I have attempted to use a consistent categorization or article grouping scheme across all 20+ years, even though editors or previous compilations may not have used this convention. This index contains the following specific information: Title of each article along with a descriptive supplement such as club affiliation, noted customizers, past owners, professions, etc. The author’s and/or photographer’s name where space allowed. Featured vehicle year, make, model, & engine and/or engine displacement where available or where space allowed. Vehicle owner name, city and state. Where the country is other than the United States, I listed the country Product manufacturer name, city and state. Address may be included if space allowed. The month and page number of each feature article or photograph. The index is sorted by year, and a title at the top of each page indicates which year.
