Susan and I had a great time on Opening Day. With a theme like a lot of us who are mostly out there just for the “Making Memories,” what better yacht to make our flagship than fun. Don’t be surprised at the occasional water Chuck Kellogg’s classic yacht, , and who better to race us balloon or squirt gun competition and I am around the course than Flag Captain (and sometimes racecar driver) always pleasantly surprised at the number of M/V folks, with roots Harry Braunstein. - 2 - VOLUNTEERS by Steve Gordon

Come on now we’re marching to the sea Got a revolution PORTLIGHT Got to revolution publisһed montһly by tһe Who will take it from you We will and who are we We are volunteers of Jefferson Airplane - Volunteers PORTLAND YACHT CLUB Normally, you’d be reading from me about some party, cruise or event at PYC with the usual 2341 NE Marine Drive blend of sarcasm, humor and fiction; but this time, it’s serious. I say serious because as Portland, Oregon 97211 every year passes, it becomes more and more evident that there is a lowering of respect and 503-285-1922 • 503-283-4960 (f) admiration for the very people that take their time to to either help run the club [email protected] or serve on various committees. Thus, you can consider this column my first editorial since www.portlandyc.com starting to write for the Portlight years ago. Editor – Susan Dorn

Let’s consider the amount of time that is required to keep this club running on a daily basis, Officers and Trustees

which is considerable. Sure, we have management and associated staff that assist in sending Commodore Christopher Dorn (sail)

you a bill, serving you at the bar and in keeping things running smoothly - but they are paid Vice Commodore Larry Justice (power)

employees. Everyone else, from the Commodore to the member seen cleaning the bathrooms Secretary/Treasurer Gil MacGregor (sail)

at the Outstation, is not paid; they are Volunteers. Just from an operations perspective, it Rear Commodore Larry Cirotski (power)

would cost 10X (my estimate) what it currently costs to run this club if we didn’t have our Trustee Dale Richards (power)

community of Volunteers. That means your monthly moorage bill and membership fees Trustee Mary Stainsby (sail)

could be as much as $1,000 or more. Are you willing to pay that? Trustee Terri Entler (sail)

Trustee David Stuckey (power) With Volunteers we have a club that can function, truly, as a member owned club. You can Trustee Al Parr (power) enjoy the Outstation, for example, because Volunteers keep it running and upgrade it with free labor and time. Events at the clubhouse such as dinners or New Year’s parties exist 100% FOR SALE BY OWNER because of Volunteers who plan the event, secure the entertainment, decorate and basically do everything behind the scenes that you don’t see. All Volunteers deserve a huge pat on the back and a sincere thank you. What they don’t deserve is disrespect and frivolous complaints. I could fill a whole column based on the things we all hear about regarding what goes on at PYC and the political discussions pertaining to whatever the issue of the week happens to be. This is disconcerting because at the end of the day, nobody you see helping out or leading a committee or volunteering to be on the board is getting paid one dime for their time.

Consider this the next time you see a member on the docks painting a railing or another member serving you food at a cruise. It’s all volunteer labor; and for that, we should all be 40’ BILL GARDEN DESIGNED thankful. DIESEL EXPRESS CRUISER

- 3 - SAILING NEWS FROM OUR SAILING CAPTAINS – VICTORIA & TIMM LESSLEY

On April 11th Portland Yacht Club held its traditional “Sailor’s Dinner” with a major break-away from the traditional awards night format. There was an awesome crowd that enjoyed LIVE Fire/LED Hoop Dancers, Americas Cup Video Footage, a LIVE performance by Patrick Lamb AND great food! Next up, if you were there, you will remember Portland Yacht Club’s 2014 Spring Regatta on April 26th and 27th! The notable weather will not be forgotten! We faced thunder, lightning, rain, hail, and massive squalls. Through it all we were able to get 5 races off. Please see results at SailPDX.org. Lastly, we want to report the results of the 2014 Oregon Offshore International Yacht Race (shown below). Congratulations to the following PYC boats: “California Girl”, “Riva”, “Anam Cara” and “Velocity”. Everyone enjoyed a wild ride up the Oregon/Washington coast for a wildly suc- cessful race! - 4 - BOYS WILL BE BOYS! 2014 Stag Cruise, April 25 - 27

It would appear that another successful Stag Cruise enters the PYC history books. According to the photos, everything seems to have been fantastic! Looks like good weather, great food, plenty of male bonding, big boats and little boats. Thanks to Dale Richards and his team of organizers.

- 5 - - 6 - OPENING DAY | RIVER YACHTING ASSOCIATION (CRYA) By Ken Kudrna

Opening Day is behind us and as reported elsewhere, PYC took five awards in the parade!

As to CRYA’s role in Opening Day, I see much better just how much work and planning goes into getting ready for this event now that I am an officer. One of the big jobs is that of the Opening Day Coordinator, a position held by our own Larry Justice. Thanks Larry, and a job well done.

As the lead club for next year, PYC’s role this year was to provide the lunches for all of the people on the six review vessels. Organizing that was my responsibility and was made easier with our Chef Brien’s help. He managed to find time after the Friday night cookout and before the Saturday breakfast to make the wonderful sandwiches. Getting them delivered to the review vessels before they departed from various club docks was no small challenge.

In my new role, I find myself attending more Marine Board and State Parks meetings in Salem. One such meeting regarded a probable increase in fees we pay for our State Boat Registration. The $3/foot fee we have been paying for 12 years will be going up in the near future. Various amounts are being considered with doubling as a possibility. I’ll have more on this later. Also, State Parks is actually looking at upgrading the docks at Rooster Rock and (don’t hold your breath) the possibility of dredging the channel into the lagoon. We’ll see what happens and when. I’ll keep you posted.

Ken Kudrna PYC Delegate to CRYA LONG RANGE PLANNING (LRP) REPORT By 2014 Long Range Planning Chair

With the opening of boating season on May 3, the LRP opened its planning meetings. Chair, Rodney Wells, met with the group and laid out three major areas for review.

First and foremost the group will be reviewing the progress and planning for the Open Moorage. As reported by the Moorage Upgrade Committee, the permit process is entering its final phase (we hope) and the committee is charged to report to the membership on the expected final plan. Given the magnitude of this project, the LRP and Moorage Upgrade committees expect to hold membership informa- tional meetings on 3 consecutive Saturdays in September followed by a Special Meeting of the Membership in October to move forward on approving a final build out plan. As envisioned by the original plan, the project is constrained by our annual cash flow that is generated. However, the cost of a new A row will probably require some form of short term financing. Both committees along with the Finance Com- mittee are committed to developing strategies that the membership will embrace without the need for any form of member assessment.

Second, the LRP has been charged with defining House and Grounds capital projects so that a short term (3-5 year) plan is made available to the Board of Trustees to follow. Former Commodore, Heather Adams, is leading a work-group to prioritize the projects. Also former Commodore, Bob Lyons, is leading another work-group to do the same prioritization for the Outstation Projects.

Finally, later in the fall, this Committee will focus on Membership areas and Finance.

- 7 - OPENING DAY | SATURDAY, MAY 3RD 2014

While dressed in our fine yachting attire our Club Staff fed us a well. The crowd was moderate yet the event was BREAKFAST represented by the true-to-tradition members and guests of Portland Yacht Club.

- 8 - Every year we have the opportunity to gather together for a short period of time to be serious about how CEREMONY far Portland Yacht Club has come and where it is hopefully headed. The ceremony came off without a hitch and we want to give “Special Thanks” to members, and others who volunteered to make this day as important as it is.

Thank you, Walter Witschard, for helping us to reflect on our club’s history.

Thank you, Gayle Timmerman, for giving us pause as we listened to your profound Invocation which made us think about the coming year and pray for those we have lost.

Thank you, Sea Scouts, for a precision flag ceremony that was representative of the code you commit to; As a SEA SCOUT I promise to do my best.

Thank you, Former Commodores and First Mates, for being present and continuing your commitment to Portland Yacht Club.

Thank you, Terry Johnson, for the professional-grade photographs of this event and so many others.

Thank you, club members and guests, for being present in support of this special day.

- 9 - WATER PARADE The Opening Day Water Parade is always a sight to behold and this year’s was just as spectacular. Our Fleet Captain, Gil MacGregor, created a sure “plan” for our fleet placement and communicated the plan during the Skippers Meeting after the ceremony.

Those who chose to bring their boats out executed their mission with precision.

Thanks to those of you who participated for the first time and to others who have been involved in Opening Day for as long as they can remember.

ADVERTISER APPRECIATION COOKOUT

Every year there is a small group of dedicated PYC members that volunteer to be in charge of selling advertising for our Roster. This is a big job with a big return; and for 2014, Adrianne Peterson and her team came through again. Community businesses buy an opportunity to advertise their goods and services in a publication that is used by most PYC members on a regular basis throughout the year. The businesses who advertise get plenty of exposure and Portland Yacht Club gets to use the adver- tising proceeds to pay for all, or part, of the Roster/Yearbook. This endeavor is obviously a win, win! The Advertiser Appreciation Cookout on Friday, June 6th is PYC’s way of saying “Thank You” to all of the advertisers who make our annual Roster possible.
