What Is the Physics Behind the Noise Created by the Didgeridoo? Christopher Courrejou What is the physics behind the noise created by the didgeridoo? Christopher Courrejou The didgeridoo is a wind instrument most commonly known as the main instrument used by the aboriginal tribes of Australia. It’s simply just a branch that has been hollowed out from termites, and then is hand carved and painted to complete the didgeridoo. The didgeridoo is known as a natural trumpet in the music world, because the majority of the instruments playing abilities come from the natural process it goes through. All aspects of the didgeridoo, length, weight, shape, etc, affect the sound the didgeridoo makes. The harmonics created by the didgeridoo are what makes the didgeridoo so mysterious. It has the ability to make sounds that all other man made instruments fail to perform. The secret to its incomparable abilities lies within all the physical properties that separate the didgeridoo from all other wind instruments. These physical properties lead to the abnormal harmonics projected by the didgeridoo, which will be discussed in full throughout the talk. The Message from Water Lausatianragit Thanabordin The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of sound in water. Sounds have different structures and can be good sounds or noise. Music is one kind of sound and music is one way for people to relax. This seminar shows the structure of water when exposed to music of different types. It helps to know the differences of sound in music and in words. Various Applications of an Optical Trap Brad Holmes An optical trap system uses an infrared laser to manipulate a microscopic particle in a solution. The particle experiences a force linearly proportional to the distance it travels away from the laser. This relationship is approximated with Hooke’s law. Using the optical trap, the Brownian motion of a particle in a solution will be represented by studying the position and force over time. The system will also be used to trap E.coli bacterium and to study how it moves through its environment. Finally, an attempt will be made to determine the molecular orientation of a liquid crystal sample. .

While talking about Yaroomba, Lyndon stated this area too was and is ‘bunya country’. Windolf (1986, p.8) writes about the first Qmber-ge?ers who came to the ‘Coolum District’ in the 1860’s.

    John Gould and David Attenborough: seeing the natural world through birds and Aboriginal bark painting by Donna Leslie* Abstract The English naturalist and ornithologist, John Gould, visited Australia in the late 1830s to work on a major project to record the birds of Australia. In the early 1960s, around 130 years later, the English naturalist, David Attenborough, visited Australia, too. Like his predecessor, Attenborough also brought with him a major project of his own. Attenborough’s objective was to investigate Aboriginal Australia and he wanted specifically to look for Aboriginal people still painting in the tradition of their ancestors. Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory was his destination. Gould and Attenborough were both energetic young men, and they each had a unique project to undertake. This essay explores aspects of what the two naturalists had to say about their respective projects, revealing through their own published accounts their particular ways of seeing and interpreting the natural world in Australia, and Australian Aboriginal people and their art, respectively. The essay is inspired by the author’s curated exhibition, Seeing the natural world: birds, animals and plants of Australia, held at the Ian Potter Museum of Art from 20 March to 2 June 2013. An exhibition at the Ian Potter Museum of Art, Seeing the natural world: birds, animals and plants of Australia currently showing from 20 March 2013 to 2 June 2013, explores, among other things, lithographs of Australian birds published by the English naturalist and ornithologist John Gould [1804-1881], alongside bark paintings by Mick Makani Wilingarr [c.1905-1985], an Aboriginal artist from Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory (Chisholm 1966; McCulloch 2006: 471; Morphy 2012).

It plays an integral part in Australian Aboriginal history, spirituality, rituals and ceremonies. Didgeridoo playing is solely based on oral tradition with varying techniques and interpretations among Aboriginal communities. For non-Aboriginal musicians and composers, the didgeridoo lacks the status of a “serious” instrument and is often viewed as a novelty instrument. This may be why there is a lack of didgeridoo notation and its misrepresentation in the western notation world. This paper presents a “Didgeridoo Notation Lexicon” which will allow non-didgeridoo composers to understand a readable legend and incorporate the didgeridoo into their compositions. The need for didgeridoo notation will be discussed and analyzed in comparison to previous notation attempts of composers and musicologists such as Sean O’Boyle, Liza Lim, Harold Kacanek and Wulfin Lieske. In the past, the inclusion of the didgeridoo in orchestral contexts has predominately been focussed on its associated Aboriginal imagery regarding dreamtime and spirituality. Conversely, my original composition fully integrates the didgeridoo within the orchestra as an equal instrument, not a focal point to advance a particular theme. I travelled to Cairns, Australia to interview world-renowned didgeridoo player, David Hudson. Hudson’s insight, experience and knowledge of the Aboriginal community supported the creation of a Didgeridoo Notation Lexicon.

The Music Department at the University of Sheffield has a long, distinguished record for teaching and research in ethnomusicology, and this year is the third time the BFE Annual Conference has been held at Sheffield; the first was in 1985 and the second in 2000. Sheffield is renowned for its thriving folk music scene and the BFE conference immediately follows a one-day conference on “Digital Folk”. This forms part of a large-scale research project at Sheffield University, and gives delegates the opportunity to attend both events and explore dialogues between their related themes. The suggested talking point of “Tradition Today” for the Annual Conference reflects the research strengths of Sheffield’s ethnomusicology programme while inviting delegates from around the world to share their insights on aspects of tradition and innovation in music and in ethnomusicology itself. Proposers have also been invited to submit research in any area of ethnomusicology, and the conference programme amply reflects the diverse interests of the BFE, from innovation in ethnomusicology and traditional music to musical migration, from ecoactivism to digital research and practice, and from soundscapes to the ethics of studying music and violence. BFE conferences are a chance for us to socialise and make music together, as well as share our research, and the stimulating programme of papers and panels is complemented by a host of other exciting events.
