A gender/sex SCT diagram. 135 ix LIST OF APPENDICES Appendix A: Gender/Sex Diversity Beliefs Scale, Preliminary Item List 127 Appendix B: Gender/Sex Diversity Beliefs Scale 133 Appendix C: Sexual Configurations Theory – Gender/Sex Diagram 135 x ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the structure and significance of beliefs about the nature of gender/sex categories, or gender/sex diversity beliefs, across a series of empirical studies. In Chapter 1, I describe the recent history of the study of gender/sex categories and gender/sex diversity beliefs, and implications for the current sociopolitical situation of gender/sex minorities. Claims about the nature of gender/sex and the meaning of gender/sex categories are contentious both within and beyond feminist discourses, including in public policy and academic research, and this dissertation clarifies their implications for understanding gender/sex majorities’ attitudes about minorities. Next, in Chapter 2, I take a bottom-up approach to understanding heterogeneity in gender/sex diversity beliefs by examining variation in individuals’ definitions of gender/sex categories. I analyze the presence of sociocultural and/or biological content in participants’ definitions of the words woman, man, feminine, masculine, female, and male. Further, I examine the complexity of participants’ definitions and the role of social location factors, particularly gender/sex and sexual minority/majority status. In Chapter 3, I explore in-depth a sub-sample of transgender-exclusionary radical feminists Who participated in the research described in Chapter 2 to disrupt and control it. I contextualize why my research Was targeted in particular and I describe implications for online diversity-related research more generally. In Chapter 4, I develop the Gender/Sex Diversity Beliefs Scale (GSDB), a survey measure of beliefs about the nature of gender/sex that are especially relevant to gender/sex minority identities. I create an item list with feedback from community experts (i.e., gender/sex xi minority individuals) and academic experts on gender/sex diversity and/or beliefs about the nature of social categories. Across multiple studies, I test the factor structure and test-retest reliability of the GSDB. Further, I examine the relationship of the GSDB to sociopolitical ideologies and attitudes about gender/sex minorities. Finally, in Chapter 5, I develop an intervention to improve gender/sex majorities’ attitudes about gender/sex minorities and gender/sex diversity beliefs.

Gender is a complex issue, constituents of which encompass styles of dressing, patterns of moving as well as ways of talking rather than just being limited to biological sex. Over the years, the perception of the issue ‘gender’ has been changing and developing from essentialism to social constructionism. Essentialism suggests that gender is a biological sex, by contrast, social constructionism suggests that gender is constructed within a social and cultural discourse. Due to its complex nature, gender intrigues numerous debates over the extent to which gender is a biological construct or a social construct. Social constructionists employ discourse analysis as a method for research on gender identity. Discursive psychology is one of most important approaches within discourse analysis in the field of social psychology.

My argument will present how applying transgender as an analytical category to vegetarian eco-feminisms, can be contributive in expanding ethical and political solidarity within feminist projects, which apply gender identity politics to their conceptualizations and argumentations. I will outline the potential to transcend usages of gender identity politics upon a cisnormative canon of vegetarian eco-feminisms lead by Carol J. Adams’ The Sexual Politics of Meat (1990). Adams’s canon of vegetarian eco-feminisms appropriates diet as a central resource of their political projects, which contest speciesism and cis-sexism. Like Adams’ canon, my analysis will consider diet as always having political connotations and implications, both for individuals and their embodiments, within broader socio-political realms. Alongside diet, transgender as an analytical category will be employed within analysis, due to its potential of exposing how genders as social categories and constructs are re-formed. My analysis will be based on narrative interviews, which will explore the multi-directional ethical and political implications of meat non-consumption and cisgender non-conformity among members of Berlin’s transgender / cisgender non-conforming and meat non-consuming subcultures.

However, queer theorists, such as Butler, pointed out that the sex/gender dichotomy is too simplistic, problematic even, in that it marginalizes other gender, sex and sexuality identities through its hegemonic framework of heteronormativity. The ambiguity now led to asking the fundamental question: What is gender? In return, there are two stances that attempt to answer the ontological aspect. Gender realism states that gender is real in that gender is essential and universal in all human beings. On the other hand, gender nominalism states that gender is not real in that sense but in that it is and ought to be promoted by external factors such as social construction and the foundations for a rigid identity politics. This paper aims to explain the narrative through the defences and drawbacks behind both stances of the debate in order to see the various ways of how feminists account for gender despite having the same objective to abolish oppression that the patriarchy promotes. Furthermore, in order to see the significance of it all further in the present day society, I will bring the debate into the light of the Trans community.

    Feminist Gender Theory: Charlotte Witt and Gender Uniessentialism A thesis submitted to the faculty of the Athenaeum of Ohio/Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts (Catholic Studies) By Jonathan M. Jergens Cincinnati, Ohio May 2018 Abstract Professor Charlotte Witt, of the University of New Hampshire, has developed a new gender theory that is unique in the contemporary feminist movement. Her gender theory rests on a form of essentialism called “uniessentialism.” The primary aim of this thesis is to articulate Witt’s theory, and specifically that of uniessentialism, in light of Aristotle. Aristotle serves as a foundation for many of Witt’s arguments, including essentialism, which will be analyzed. This thesis will seek to clarify Witt’s gender theory and enable a reader, in light of various perspectives and critiques of her theory, to make a determination on whether her theory is coherent. Several analyses on Witt’s gender theory will be presented, including contemporary feminist critiques of her position, a critique of biology and sexual difference in light of her arguments, an analysis of a traditional understanding of essence, and ending with an alternative view of gender from a combined Aristotelian/Thomistic viewpoint. The author maintains a neutral position while articulating the theory of Witt and Aristotle and the critiques in the final chapter. However, with respect to Witt’s theory, the author’s biases include disagreement on the reality of sexual difference, disagreement on her explanation of personhood and the social individual, and disagreement about essentialism and the constitution view.

The UN Security Council’s groundbreaking resolutions on Women Peace, and Security (WPS) — and U.S. law implementing these commitments — rest on the assumption that women’s participation in peace and security matters will lead to more sustainable peace, because women presumably “perform” in ways that reduce conflict, violence, and extremism. This idea is of heightened importance today because women are still vastly underrepresented in positions of leadership in the peace and security field, having yet to “shatter that highest and hardest glass ceiling” as Commander-in- Chief in the United States or rise to the role of Secretary-General in the United Nations.
