Coles2 1 Department of Biology, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87131, U.S.A. 2 Mollusca Section, Department of Biodiversity, National Museum of Wales, Cathays Park, Cardiff CF10 3NP, U.K. Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract: The Pupillidae form an important component of eastern North American land snail biodiversity, representing approx. 12% of the entire fauna, 25-75% of all species and individuals at regional scales, at least 30% of the species diversity, and 33% of individuals within any given site. In some regions pupillids represent 80-100% of total molluscan diversity within sites, notably in taiga, tundra, and the base-poor pine savannas and pocosins of the southeastern coastal plain. Adequate documentation of North American land snail biodiversity thus requires investigators to effi ciently collect and accurately identify individuals of this group. This paper presents a set of annotated keys to the 65 species in this family known to occur in North America east of the Rocky Mountains. The distinguishing taxonomic features, updated county-scale range maps, and ecological conditions favored by each are presented in hopes of stimulating future research in this important group. Vertigo moulinsiana is a minute land snail spe- cies which requires high humidity conditions and is found in wet, temporarily inundated habitats. The species is listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species under the VU (vulnerable) category and is considered a high conservation priority. It is also mentioned in Annex II of the EU Habitat Directive, which imposes the obligation to monitor the species in member countries. The monitoring of V. moulinsiana is based on counting individuals attached to plants in the field, and thus any results may only be properly evaluated when the behavior of the species is understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the light–dark cycle of both adults and juveniles within the species as well as to compare activity patterns of both age groups in dark conditions in tem- peratures of 6 ºC and 21 ºC. Observations were carried out under laboratory conditions, at a high and constant humidity (humidity was at or nearly 100 %). -

Introduction
1 2 INTRODUCTION The terrestrial gastropod fauna of the Midwest includes a number of the rarest animal taxa in North America. This fact was recognized as early as the late 1800's when the Pleistocene Hendersonia occulta was discovered alive along the Upper Mississippi River valley (Pilsbry 1948). Since then, a number of Midwestern endemics or near endemics have been identified including Catinella exile, Catinella gelida, Discus macclintockii, Hawaiia n.sp., Stenotrema hubrichti, Vertigo hubrichti, Vertigo 'iowaensis , Vertigo mermacensis, and Vertigo morsei (Hubricht 1985, Frest 1990, Frest 1991). Previous investigations into terrestrial gastropod biodiversity in the upper Midwest have been largely limited to the Paleozoic Plateau ('Driftless Area') and the Iowan Erosional Surface in northeastern Iowa, and the Black Hills of South Dakota (Frest 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986a, 19866, 1987, 1990, 1991, Frest and Johannes 1991). As these areas were beyond the limit of Wisconsin glaciation, they were presumed to be the only potential refuges for glacial relict taxa However, investigations made from 1995-1998 from eastern Wisconsin to southern Ontario documented that these relicts were not as geographically restricted as previously believed. Four habitats were found to harbor the bulk of important land snail species in this area (Nekola et al. 1996; Nekola 19986). Carbonate cliffs support populations of at least seventeen rare Michigan and Wisconsin taxa, nine of which are likely glacial relicts. The fauna of these sites, while bearing marked similarity to algific talus slope and maderate cliff sites of the Paleozoic Plateau, are unique and support a higher frequency of northeastern species at (or beyond) their normal range limits (Nekola et al. -

DICKSON2 The Loess Hills and Missouri Alluvial Plain landform regions of western Iowa were surveyed for molluscs in July and August, 1982. We focused on the modern fauna and that of the late Woodfordian (Wisconsinan) Peoria Loess, but a few localities with older and younger Pleistocene and Holocene faunas were also collected. Systematic bulk samples were taken at 95 localities: fauna! lists for 7 5 are included herein. The modern land snail fauna comprises 40 species, most of which are small, drought-resistant cosmopolitan or Interior Province forms. -

The form of presentation has been determined by the fact that, in the first place, the paper is intended to serve as a basis for further scientific work and, in the second place, to serve as a reference text for teachers of zoology in Utah colleges and high schools and as an aid to amateur collectors. The article is based primarily upon a study of upward of one thousand sets of shells collected during the year 1927 and a lesser number collected during 1928, all of which are now deposited in the Zoological Museum o.f the University of Utah. Trips totaling approximately three thousand miles, within the borders of the state, were taken to secure these specimens. An accompanying map is given to facilitate reference to the principal localities visited or referred to. Such Utah material as is contained in the Dr. Orson Howard collection, also deposited in the University, has been in cluded ; but that collection is largely of fresh-water bivalves from all parts of the United States. In most cases identifications have been checked by comparison with reliably determined specimens from other localities. -

Wisconsin Wildlife Action Plan 3.5 Invertebrate Species of Greatest Conservation Need 3.5 Invertebrate Species of Greatest Conservation Need This is an overview of Wisconsin’s invertebrate Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) and their associations with Natural Communities and Ecological Landscapes. This section also identifies invertebrate species that are not classified as SGCN, but are classified as BasicSINS (species with information needs), RankingSINS, or species that had sufficient information to assess them with confidence and did not meet the SGCN criteria (e.g., ranked S4 or S5, ranked S3G5 or S3S4G5, or did not meet the additional criteria considered after assessing S/G-Ranks). See Section 2.6 for more explanation on ranking and SINS. The issues, challenges and conservation actions that will be important for most or all invertebrate SGCN over the next ten years are presented in the second half of this section along with those applicable to one or a few invertebrate species. The discussion of the issues and challenges facing invertebrate SGCN and their habitat, and the conservation actions that address them, follows nomenclature developed by the Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation.1 The Open Standards classification for Conservation Actions, with some modification for circumstances particular to Wisconsin, is presented in Appendix 2.1 at the end of Section 2. When dealing with invertebrates, it is often necessary to reconcile conflicts in the scientific nomenclature used by different researchers. Such conflicts result from advances in the description and documentation of previously undescribed invertebrate species and a changing understanding of evolutionary relationships. To ensure the most up-to-date taxonomic labels, scientific names from the Tree of Life Web Project (The University of Arizona 2004) were used. -

Over 72,500 shells from at least 28 species of terrestrial and 23 species of freshwater mollusc have been recovered, an abundance and diversity far higher than previously reported from the region. The molluscan assemblages are dominated by land snails, especially members of the genus Vallonia, represented by five species including Vallonia tenuilabris and two poorly known species Vallonia kamtschatica and Vallonia cf. chinensis. Other noteworthy species recovered include Gastrocopta theeli, Carychium pessimum, Vertigo extima (southernmost record), Vertigo microsphaera and the first Asian records of three other taxa (Vertigo geyeri, Vertigo genesii and Vertigo parcedentata). Illustrations are provided for the critical species, since opinions differ about the status of various taxa and the correct names that should be used. -
