Lyropupa cookei Clench, 1952, is shown to be a synonym of Lyropupa anceyana Cooke & Pilsbry in Pilsbry & Cooke, 1920. The sole Hawaiian record for the North American Strobilops aeneus Pilsbry, 1926, is almost certainly based on a mislabeled specimen, and accordingly this species should be removed from the Hawaiian faunal list. Lyropupa cookei Clench , 1952 Lyropupa Pilsbry, 1900, is a genus of pupilloid land snails endemic to the Hawaiian islands. in their monograph of the genus, Pilsbry & Cooke (1920 in 1918–1920: 253–254, pl. 26, figs. 3, 6) published a description of “ Lyropupa anceyana C. & P., n. sp.,” based on specimens from ola‘a on the island of Hawai‘i held in the collections of Bishop Museum and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. They stated that their new species had previously been misidentified by Ancey (1904:124) as Lyropupa lyrata (Gould, 1843) . Several pages earlier, in their systematic treatment of that species, Pilsbry & Cooke (1918–1920: 235) had also set forth their conclusion that Ancey had misidenti - fied Gould’s species and stated that in fact Ancey’s “description of lyrata was based on specimens of an unnamed species for which the name L. -

Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge consists of important water resources for wildlife and in particular for waterfowl. The water source for the wildlife comes from numerous springs on the eastern side of the Fish Springs Range. The springs are known for a diversity of mollusk (Russell, 1971 ), an endemic species Stagnicola pilsbryi, and species of high interest as Valvata and Tryonia. Because the springs occur within the jurisdiction of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and because several aquatic species in Bonneville Basin are becoming rare and endangered, some of the springs at Fish Springs are suitable for relocation of native aquatic fauna as the Least Chub. However, the exotic mosquito fish Gambvsia efficiently competes with the Least Chub, and prior to the introduction of the Least Chub, the mosquito fish must be removed. This limited survey of House and Percy Springs molluscan fauna is to determine if unique molluscan species occurs within the springs and whether these molluscan species would be jeopardized by the rotenone fish treatment. Methods. Various microhabitats in House Spring and its outflow and Percy Spring and its outflow were sampled by a food strainer 12 em diameter. These microhabitats included spiny naiad Najas matina, stonewort Chara, bottom sediment, and bottom samples where molluscan shells accumulated. House Spring was drawn down very low and this made sampling accessible at the numerous springs within the House Spring complex. Percy Spring was maintained at a high level, making sampling rather difficult. -

In some regions pupillids represent 80-100% of total molluscan diversity within sites, notably in taiga, tundra, and the base-poor pine savannas and pocosins of the southeastern coastal plain. Adequate documentation of North American land snail biodiversity thus requires investigators to effi ciently collect and accurately identify individuals of this group. This paper presents a set of annotated keys to the 65 species in this family known to occur in North America east of the Rocky Mountains. The distinguishing taxonomic features, updated county-scale range maps, and ecological conditions favored by each are presented in hopes of stimulating future research in this important group. Knowledge of present-day communities and ecosystems resembling those reconstructed from the fossil record can help improve our understanding of historical distribution patterns and species composition of past communities. Here, we use a unique data set of 570 plots explored for vascular plant and 315 for land-snail assemblages located along a 650-km-long transect running across a steep climatic gradient in the Russian Altai Mountains and their foothills in southern Siberia. We analysed climatic and habitat requirements of modern populations for eight land-snail and 16 vascular plant species that are considered characteristic of the full-glacial environment of central Europe based on (i) fossil evidence from loess deposits (snails) or (ii) refugial patterns of their modern distribu- tions (plants). The analysis yielded consistent predictions of the full-glacial central European climate derived from both snail and plant populations. We found that the distribution of these 24 species was limited to the areas with mean annual temperature varying from À6.7 to 3.4 °C (median À2.5 °C) and with total annual precipitation vary- ing from 137 to 593 mm (median 283 mm). -

We conclude that these two forms represent distinct species. This underused combined approach proves to be a powerful tool in dis- tinguishing among closely related species within the genus Pupilla, and we suggest that it should be more widely adopted when sorting out complexes in other groups. A portion of this remnant, composed of wetland, grassland and forest, is protected by the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) in southern Manitoba. This heterogene- ous ecosystem has rich biodiversity; however, gastropods have not been surveyed in Canada’s tall grass prairie. We studied gastropods in Prairie, Wet Meadow, Forest, and Wet Forest habitats of the Manitoba Tall Grass Prairie Preserve that vary with respect to land management practices (prescribed burning, grazing by cattle). Gastropod community composition was unique in the Prairie where mounds of grass litter form permanently moist cavities harbouring aquatic species, while dry-habitat species colonized the upper parts of these mounds. Gastropod communities in Prairie habitats were negatively affected by grazing and burning that occurred in the five years prior to our survey. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Vertigo botanicorum sp. nov. is described from the Russian Altai Mountains. The species was recorded in 8 out of 118 study sites and totally 21 live individuals and 15 empty shells were collected. It is a medium-sized Vertigo species living in various tall-forb meadows, shrubby and forest habitats; avoiding only dry and strictly open sites. Mostly it was found in rather acidic sites of higher altitudes (above 1300 m a.s.l.). Key words: Vertigo, terrestrial microgastropods, new species, southern Siberia, distribution, ecology Introduction The terrestrial snail genus Vertigo O.F. Müller, 1774 includes approximately 70 described living species distributed mainly throughout the Holarctic, with the global diversity centre of the genus in North America (see Nekola & Coles 2010) and with ca. 30 species distributed in Eurasia (Pokryszko 2003; von Proschwitz 2007; Pokryszko et al. 2009; Sysoev & Schileyko 2009). The members of this genus have ovoid to cylindrical shells that generally range between 1.5 and 3 mm in height and have a rounded aperture with 0–9 lamellae at maturity. -

Animal Biodiversity and Conservation, 41.1: 109–115, Doi: https://doi.org/10.32800/abc.2018.41.0109 Abstract The light–dark cycle of Desmoulin’s whorl snail Vertigo moulinsiana Dupuy, 1849 (Gastropoda, Pulmonata, Vertiginidae) and its activity patterns at different temperatures. Vertigo moulinsiana is a minute land snail spe- cies which requires high humidity conditions and is found in wet, temporarily inundated habitats. The species is listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species under the VU (vulnerable) category and is considered a high conservation priority. It is also mentioned in Annex II of the EU Habitat Directive, which imposes the obligation to monitor the species in member countries. The monitoring of V. moulinsiana is based on counting individuals attached to plants in the field, and thus any results may only be properly evaluated when the behavior of the species is understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the light–dark cycle of both adults and juveniles within the species as well as to compare activity patterns of both age groups in dark conditions in tem- peratures of 6 ºC and 21 ºC. Observations were carried out under laboratory conditions, at a high and constant humidity (humidity was at or nearly 100 %). -
