Born July 23, 1929, in Danville he was a son of the late Carl Bryan and Nell 1923, in Boyle County, she was a daughter of the late George Morrissey Acton. He was a former employee of Shell Oil and Betty Chambers Cox. She was a homemaker and a Company, attended SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Baptist. She was the widow of Lee Adams. Survivors include was a Korean War Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, six daughters, Barbara Grimes of Nicholasville, Carolyn Davis Lois Massey Acton; four daughters, Emily Everett of Moores of Jessamine County, Wanda Peavler, Stella Johnson and Hill, Ind., Linda Nelson of Carmel, Ind., Caroline Matukonis of Elsie Johnson, all of Garrard County, and Joyce Phillips of Palm Coast, Fla., and Jane Stephens of Bardstown; and six Madison County; four sons, Richard Adams and Johnny grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, John Adams, both of Garrard County, Donnie Adams of Mercer Milton Acton III. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. County and Gary Adams of Jessamine County; two sisters, Wednesday at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Margie McElroy of Danville and Clara Moore of Lawrenceburg; Richard Sullivan. Visitation will be 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The questions addressed are: In what ways are women represented in WWII era comic books? What ways are they represented in Post 9/11 comic books? How are the representations similar or different? In what ways did the outside war environment influence the depiction of women in these comic books? In what ways did the comic books influence the women in the war outside the comic pages? This research will closely examine two vital periods in the publications of comic books. The World War II era includes the genesis and development to the first war-themed comics. In addition many classic comic characters were introduced during this time period. In the post-9/11 and Operation Iraqi Freedom time period war-themed comics reemerged as the dominant format of comics. McDermott Introduction By the mid-1970’s, many fans of the “Golden Age” of comic books had grown up to become writers and ultimately editors for the comics publishers, sometimes setting the nar- rative histories for their favorite childhood characters themselves. ​Many of these fans-turned- pro produced comics series that attempted to recapture the Golden Age’s excitement, patriotic fervor and whiz-bang attitude. ​The most successful of these titles were produced by Roy Thomas, who fashioned a coherent history of costumed heroes during World War II, and rec- onciled the wildly inconsistent stories of the 1940’s with tightly patrolled continuity initiated with the “Silver Age” of the 1960’s. ​With The Invaders (1975-1979), Thomas focused on the hitherto unrevealed wartime exploits of Marvel Comics’ early mainstays Captain America, the Human Torch, and Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner. ​In 1980, he moved to DC Comics and launched All-Star Squadron, which juggled the histories of the Justice Society of Amer- ica and nearly a hundred secondary characters.

STOLER Before the actual beginning of debate on the Nebraska measure of 1854, the “Appeal of the Independent Democrats” was given to the public. It was the the work of Senator Salmon P. Chase. It was signed by him, Senator Charles Sumner and four members of the House.2 The “Appeal” was widely pub- lished, and excerpts from it appeared in a vast number of newspapers. By the time the Kansas-Nebraska Act became a law in May, a great opposition to the abrogation of the anti- slavery restriction of the Missouri Compromise had developed. Much of this was certainly due to the effectiveness of the “Ap- peal”, which included the following passages well calculated to arouse deep hostility to the measure championed by Doug- las : We arraign this bill as a gross violation of a sacred pledge; as a criminal betrayal of precious rights; as part and parcel of an atrocious plot to exclude from a vast unoccupied region immigrants from the old world, and free laborers from our own States, and convert it into a dreary region of despotism, inhabited by masters and slaves. Take your maps fellow citizens, we entreat you and see what coun- try it is which this bill, gratuitously, proposes to open to slavery. We appeal to the people. We warn you that the dearest interests of freedom and the Union are in imminent peril. Demagogues may tell yon that the Union can be maintained only by submitting to the de- mands of slavery.
