Presented in Sovereignty is a selection of works from over the past decade. Andrew’s silkscreen prints, from the Hope and Peace series of 2005, deftly connect the traditions of pop art and political posters in a form of agit-pop. Alongside these are presented two sculptural works: a large, soft sculpture Maralinga clock 2015, based on a souvenir clock in the collection of Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum which commemorates the British nuclear test explosions on the desert homelands of the Tjarutja people; and The weight of history, the mark of time (sphere) 2015, a living, breathing balloon form adorned with a distinctive design inspired by the artist’s Wiradjuri heritage. -

This was a Google Forms survey. The first Google Forms survey (n = 1176) was Survey 2017 about SBS. The earlier (non Google Forms) surveys were conducted in 2013: A study of 2044 viewers of SBS television on advertising, Charter, relevance and other matters (n = 2044); and 2008: One Minute Survey (n = 1733). In mid May 2018, 1249 people took part in this online Google Forms Programs on SBS survey 2018 . The survey was open nation-wide to anyone with internet access. Across all four surveys, four different cohorts totalling 6202 SBS viewers nationally have been surveyed in every State and Territory. The data collated here is conveyed in easy to read colour coded graphs. The survey asked questions in five categories: Program content; Program titles; SBS platforms; Competition; and Advertising. SaveOurSBS.org supporters & friends of SBS page 2 of 82 Key points Of the 1249 people who participated in the survey– Most thought SBS to be a valuable public service (range per SBS outlet/platform: 58% to 88%). Almost three-quarters (70%) said SBS currently has insufficient niche programming and 69% said the programs on SBS are now of the type expected on commercial broadcasters rather than a public broadcaster compared to more than 10 years ago. -

School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry Faculty of Humanities Connecting the Dots: Case Studies into the ‘Invisible Presence’ of Aboriginal People Living in Victoria Jessi Coyle This thesis is presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Curtin University January 2019 To the best of my knowledge and belief this thesis contains no material previously published by any other person except where due acknowledgement is made. This thesis contains no material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma in any university. Signed: Date: 15 January 2019 ABSTRACT Aboriginal Victorians have been rendered as an ‘invisible presence’ by the various discourses of race and culture that emerged in 19th-century forms of colonialism, which remain influential today. This thesis demonstrates how (white) belonging is constructed within national narratives by drawing on case study analyses of contemporary Victoria’s central and western goldfields districts, and of Aboriginal Victorian participation in Australian (Rules) Football. Semi-structured interviews were conducted across two case studies, with 28 Aboriginal participants and four non- Aboriginal participants. Interviews were analysed using a grounded theory framework, which prioritises culturally respectful and transparent research by positioning the research around participant testimony rather than the 19th-century colonial research conventions that are still influential and popular today. Working within critical theory, this thesis draws on race and settler colonialism to position the invisible presence of Aboriginal people within the ‘(white) settler colonial psyche’. A central feature of the (white) settler colonial psyche is the maintenance of settler sovereignty, as imagined through (white) belonging. -

AWG Submission to the Inquiry on Australian Content on Broadcast, Radio and Streaming Services WHO WE ARE The Australian Writers' Guild (AWG) is the proFessional association For Australian screen and stage writers principally in film, television, theatre, radio and digital media. On behalF oF its members, the AWG seeks to protect and promote the rights oF writers, advance their creative rights and promote the Australian cultural voice in all its diversity. The AWG has Fought For over 50 years to improve proFessional standards, conditions and remuneration within the industry. It has been instrumental in protecting and supporting Australian and children's content, including the introduction oF quotas on commercial television in the 1960s and 1970s, and being pivotal to the introduction oF the New Eligible Drama Expenditure for subscription television in the late 1990s. INTRODUCTION The AWG appreciates the Environment and Communications ReFerences Committee’s interest in the Australian film and television industry and welcomes the opportunity to contribute and oFFer assistance where possible to this inquiry. For the purpose oF this submission, we will Focus on the matters where we consider our contribution may be most valuable to the Committee. We will limit this submission to the specific areas of our expertise and avoid duplicating issues already addressed by other industry organisations. Our submission will argue that the government should, through policy intervention, promote and deFend Australian culture by supporting Australian screen content. We submit that the current regulatory Framework is fit for purpose, but that it must be updated to be platForm-neutral and to create parity between the commercial broadcasters and online content providers, both Foreign and domestic.
