NPS Form 10-800-a OMB Approval No. 1024-0018 (6-86) B-3685 United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet Section number _7 Page J SUMMARY DESCRIPTION The Coca-Cola Company Baltimore Branch Factory, constructed from 1921 to 1935, is an early 20th century industrial complex constructed to house Coca-Cola's syrup-making operations. The complex, which spreads over a 9.4 acre site south of East Fort Avenue in an industrial area of Locust Point, is composed of a two-story brick syrup factory/sugar warehouse and an earlier two-story brick mattress factory (the Simmons Building) that Coca-Cola acquired and adapted in the 1930s. Coca-Cola extended the 1921 Syrup Factory, designed by Arthur C. Tufts, to the south in 1935 when they built the Sugar Warehouse addition, designed by Robert & Co. The facades of both the Simmons Building and the 1921 Syrup Factor}' are detailed with a modular pier and spandrel system; the Sugar Warehouse addition is a brick box with punched windows. The Simmons Building and the Sugar Warehouse employ steel frame construction; the 1921 Syrup Factory has a reinforced concrete structural system. The interiors of the Simmons Building and the Sugar Warehouse addition consist of open plan space; the interior of the Syrup Factory consists primarily of open plan space with partitioned offices along the perimeter of the south and west walls of the second floor. In a manner typical of industrial complexes, the Coca-Cola Company Baltimore Branch Factory has been altered over the years.

ABSTRACT HISTORY TATE. RACHANICE CANDY PATRICE B.A. EMORY UNIVERSITY, 1987 M.P.A. GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY, 1990 M.A. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN- MILWAUKEE, 1995 “OUR ART ITSELF WAS OUR ACTIVISM”: ATLANTA’S NEIGHBORHOOD ARTS CENTER, 1975-1990 Committee Chair: Richard Allen Morton. Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2012 This cultural history study examined Atlanta’s Neighborhood Arts Center (NAC), which existed from 1975 to 1990, as an example of black cultural politics in the South. As a Black Arts Movement (BAM) institution, this regional expression has been missing from academic discussions of the period. The study investigated the multidisciplinary programming that was created to fulfill its motto of “Art for People’s Sake.” The five themes developed from the program research included: 1) the NAC represented the juxtaposition between the individual and the community, local and national; 2) the NAC reached out and extended the arts to the masses, rather than just focusing on the black middle class and white supporters; 3) the NAC was distinctive in space and location; 4) the NAC seemed to provide more opportunities for women artists than traditional BAM organizations; and 5) the NAC had a specific mission to elevate the social and political consciousness of black people. In addition to placing the Neighborhood Arts Center among the regional branches of the BAM family tree, using the programmatic findings, this research analyzed three themes found to be present in the black cultural politics of Atlanta which made for the center’s unique grassroots contributions to the movement. The themes centered on a history of politics, racial issues, and class dynamics.

Cook, Chair Professor Philip J. Deloria Professor Susan J. Douglass Professor Penny Von Eschen © Laura A. Hymson 2011 Acknowledgements I owe an extraordinary debt to the people and institutions that helped and supported me as I worked to complete this dissertation. While working on this project, I spent time in several cities, including: Ann Arbor, New York, Atlanta, Urbana- Champagne, Alexandria, Washington, D.C, Newark, and Hartford. In all of these places where I have lived, researched, or taught, I have been shown incredible kindness and I am grateful for everyone who has helped me along the way. Thanks first to the chair of my dissertation committee, Jay Cook, who has been exceptionally generous with his time. Without his insightful feedback, invaluable advice, and thoughtful comments this dissertation would not have been possible. I can only hope to be as effective and compassionate as a teacher and mentor as he has been to me. My entire dissertation committee was composed of scholars whose work I truly admire and I am grateful for the time they devoted to my ideas and my work. Penny Von Eschen and Phil Deloria provided important feedback on drafts, and made suggestions for research and writing that helped advance my thinking on a number key issues at the heart of this project.
