Many of these assets are tangible in nature, such as our facilities, classrooms, and the academic and technological resources in them. Yet it is the intangible assets encompassed by our human capital, intellectual property, knowledge activities, and collaborations with other scholars, business leaders, and the surrounding community that I find of most value. This distinction between tangible and intangible assets often helps to frame my thinking when I consider those aspects of our school that make us distinctive. One such aspect, the Goizueta network—the theme of this issue of Emory Business—differentiates us in important ways from our competitors. In spite of our size, we enjoy active alumni engagement, strong ties to business and industry, and committed faculty, staff, and students who come together in myriad ways for the good of the school and one another. The commitment and passion of alumni for Goizueta—intangibles that lead to everything from a helpful phone call to a changed career—have helped create our truly outstanding network. One of the greatest benefits of a Goizueta education is membership in one of the best business networks in the world. Broad participation is key to its ever- increasing value. In order to leverage our vibrant community, I encourage you to be an active participant in Goizueta’s diverse network of smart, accomplished, and ambitious business leaders. Lawrence M. ABSTRACT HISTORY TATE. RACHANICE CANDY PATRICE B.A. EMORY UNIVERSITY, 1987 M.P.A. GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY, 1990 M.A. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN- MILWAUKEE, 1995 “OUR ART ITSELF WAS OUR ACTIVISM”: ATLANTA’S NEIGHBORHOOD ARTS CENTER, 1975-1990 Committee Chair: Richard Allen Morton. Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2012 This cultural history study examined Atlanta’s Neighborhood Arts Center (NAC), which existed from 1975 to 1990, as an example of black cultural politics in the South. As a Black Arts Movement (BAM) institution, this regional expression has been missing from academic discussions of the period. The study investigated the multidisciplinary programming that was created to fulfill its motto of “Art for People’s Sake.” The five themes developed from the program research included: 1) the NAC represented the juxtaposition between the individual and the community, local and national; 2) the NAC reached out and extended the arts to the masses, rather than just focusing on the black middle class and white supporters; 3) the NAC was distinctive in space and location; 4) the NAC seemed to provide more opportunities for women artists than traditional BAM organizations; and 5) the NAC had a specific mission to elevate the social and political consciousness of black people. In addition to placing the Neighborhood Arts Center among the regional branches of the BAM family tree, using the programmatic findings, this research analyzed three themes found to be present in the black cultural politics of Atlanta which made for the center’s unique grassroots contributions to the movement. The themes centered on a history of politics, racial issues, and class dynamics.

  • 2002-02-28 -- OSE-EIS Numbered Memo: Requirement and Funding for Specialized Transportation Services
MEMORANDUM TO: Local and Intermediate School District Superintendents, Business Managers, Directors of Transportation FROM: Jacquelyn J. Thompson, Ph.D., Director DATE: February 28, 2002 SUBJECT: Requirement and Funding for Specialized Transportation Services Local school districts have asked the Department of Education many questions lately regarding the requirement to transport special education pupils. The purpose of this memo is to clarify those requirements and to describe what data is required to receive appropriate funding for providing specialized transportation services. Requirement to Transport Students with Disabilities (Handicapped Pupils) The requirement to transport students with disabilities (handicapped pupils) is found both in federal legislation and in Michigan’s Revised School Code. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Section 300.24 defines the transportation of students with disabilities (handicapped pupils) as a related service. As such, transportation needs of the pupil should be discussed and if necessary, described at each individual educational plan (IEP) meeting. Section 1751 of the Revised School Code also requires a school district to provide transportation for special education pupils who could not otherwise benefit from public education. Rule 388.383 of the Administrative Rules for State Aid for the Transportation of School Children further requires that special education pupils be transported on regular education bus runs whenever possible. When a school district determines that a pupil cannot be transported in a regular education vehicle, or a regular education vehicle with modifications (approved baby seats, transportation aides, special seating arrangements, etc.), then the district may provide specialized transportation services through the use of a special education transportation vehicle. The district may also contract with a third party for the provisions of specialized transportation services.
