Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. Our primary purpose is to educate and inform parents about this alarming trend as well as to ask the industry to exercise self-restraint. Some say there is no cause for concern. We believe there is. Teen pregnancies and teenage suicide rates are at epidemic proportions today. The Noedecker Report states that in the United States of America we have the highest teen pregnancy rate of any developed country: 96 out of 1,000 teenage girls become pregnant. Rape is up 7 percent in the latest statistics, and the suicide rates of youth between 16 and 24 has gone up 300 percent in the last three decades while the adult level has remained the same. There certainly are many causes for these ills in our society, but it is our contention that the pervasive messages aimed at children which promote and glorify suicide, rape… and so on, have to be numbered among the contributing factors…. Now that more and more elementary school children are becoming consumers of rock music, we think it is imperative to discuss this question. What can be done to help parents who want to protect their children from these messages if they want to? Since the position's creation, both Presidents and the public have wanted First Ladies to be seen and not heard. Some First Ladies have stayed within these confines, either by doing no more than simply supporting their husbands, or by taking care to exercise power only behind the scenes. Several First Ladies in this century, however have followed the lead of Eleanor Roosevelt, who broke barriers in her vigorous campaigns for various social causes, and they have brought many worthy issues to the forefront of the American consciousness.' Most recently, with the rumblings of discontent with the role's limited opportunities for independent action that accompanied the arrival of the women's movement, Rosalynn Carter and Hillary Clinton attempted to expand the role of the First Lady even further by becoming policy-makers during their husbands' presidencies.3 This evolution in the office of First Lady parallels women's general progress in society.

Conservative Christians deplore the left-wing bias of the mainstream media and the saturation of popular culture by sex and violence and are promoting strate- gies such as faith-based home-schooling to protect children from the chaotic moral relativism of a secular society. Liberals in turn condemn the meddling by Christian fundamentalists in politics, notably in regard to abortion and gay civil rights or the Mideast, where biblical assumptions, it is claimed, have shaped us policy. There is vicious mutual recrimination, with believers caricatured as paranoid, apocalyptic crusaders who view America’s global mission as divinely inspired, while lib- erals are portrayed as narcissistic hedonists and godless elit- ists, relics of the unpatriotic, permissive 1960s. A primary arena for the conservative-liberal wars has been the arts. While leading conservative voices defend the tradi- tional Anglo-American literary canon, which has been under challenge and in flux for forty years, American conservatives on the whole, outside of the New Criterion magazine, have shown little interest in the arts, except to promulgate a didac- tic theory of art as moral improvement that was discarded with the Victorian era at the birth of modernism. Liberals, on the other hand, have been too content with the high visibility of the arts in metropolitan centers, which comprise only a fraction of America. Like many other young children, Karenna had heard Prince’s music on the radio and wanted to hear more. Upon listening to the full album Karenna alerted her mother to the provocative nature of some of Prince’s lyrics, such as the track “Darling Nikki,” which contained the lyrics “I knew a girl named Nikki/Guess you could say she was a sex fiend/I met her in a hotel lobby/Masturbating with a magazine.”1 Tipper and Karenna Gore were embarrassed and ashamed that they were listening to such vulgar music, that they were doing so in their home. Deviance and profanity, something that one would expect to find in the street or back alleys had gotten into their home, albeit unwittingly. Tipper Gore soon realized that similar content was being broadcast into their home through other mediums, such as the new, wildly popular Music Television (MTV).
