Aj v tomto kalendárnom roku ponúkame čitateľom nášho časopisu Notitiæ historiæ ecclesiasticæ opäť zaujímavé príspevky z oblasti cirkevných dejín. Spolu deväť do- kumentov pripravili autori s úmyslom ponúknuť výsledky svojho bádania. Prvý príspevok nám poslal Ladislav Varga, doktorand Pápežskej univerzity sv. Tomáša Akvinského v Ríme – Materský vzťah Márie voči kresťanom a Cirkvi v období cirkevných otcov. Jozefa, so špecifickým zbožným titulom na výrazné uctievanie. Na tejto konferencii vy- stúpili prednášatelia so zaujímavými príspevkami. Zvlášť možno spomenúť zverej- nenie podoby tvárí svätých: Marka Križina, Štefana Pongráca SJ a Melichara Gro- deckého SJ. Táto rekonštrukcia ich podoby vznikla prostredníctvom antropologic- kého skúmania a digitalizáciou pozostatkov umučených kňazov. Na záver nášho predstavenia obsahu toho čísla chceme popriať našim čitate- ľom príjemné čítanie a obohatenie o nové poznatky. Redakcia časopisu 6 Notitiæ historiæ ecclesiasticæ 1/2019 Štúdie, články | Studies, Articles MARY’S MATERNAL RELATIONSHIP TOWARDS CHRISTIANS AND THE CHURCH IN THE AGE OF CHURCH FATHERS Ladislav Varga MATERSKÝ VZŤAH MÁRIE VOČI KRESŤANOM A CIRKVI V OBDOBÍ CIRKEV- NÝCH OTCOV Abstract: In 1964 Pope Paul VI solemnly proclaimed a new Marian title, Mother of the Church. This article follows the first signs of a relationship coming from the title. It is Mary’s relationship towards all men, Christians and consequently also towards the Church. From the time of the first Christian authors and apologists, the person of Mary as the mother of Jesus became a part of many writings. The development of an understanding of her relationship towards Jesus was the result of defending the true human body of Jesus and thus the Incarnation as well. During that time, another relationship of Mary was slowly arising = her relation towards the disciples, Christians and later consequently to all men and women. The first one was defined in the dogma of Theotokos. The second one was defined as a doctrine centuries later. However, its development began during the time of the Church Fathers. This article focuses on writings and homilies of that period showing the gradual development. A list of authors includes the Church Fathers like St. Ambrose and St. Augustine. At the same time, the interesting point of this development

Ad Caeli Reginam accepted so that with the encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam, of October 11, 1954, Pope Pius XII instituted the feast of the Queenship of Mary.[2] 2 Basic teachings According to Catholic teaching Mary should be called Queen, not only because of her divine motherhood of Je- sus Christ, but also because God has willed her to have an exceptional role in the work of salvation. Mary was cho- sen as Mother of Christ in order that she might become a partner in the redemption of the human race: “As Christ, the new Adam must be called a King not merely because He is Son of God, but also because He is our Redeemer, so, analogously, the Most Blessed Virgin is queen not only because she is Mother of God, but also because, as the new Eve, she was associated with the new Adam.”[3] 3 Context The Church has always taught that Mary is far above all other creatures in dignity, and after her Son possesses pri- macy over all. Germanus of Constantinople says: “Your honor and dignity surpass the whole of creation; your Botticelli, the coronation of the Virgin greatness places you above the angels.” And St. John Damascene goes so far as to say: “Limitless is the dif- Ad Caeli Reginam is an encyclical of Pope Pius XII, ference between God’s servants and His Mother.” [4] given at Rome, from St. Peter’s Basilica, on the feast of Pius XII quotes his predecessors: Pope Pius IX, “With a the Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the eleventh heart that is truly a mother’s,” does she approach the prob- day of October, 1954, in the sixteenth year of his Pon- lem of our salvation, and is solicitous for the whole hu- tificate.

  • The Immaculate Heart of Mary in the Theology of Reparation
The Immaculate Heart of Mary in the Theology of Reparation Arthur Burton Calkins I. Introduction One can never speak of the Immaculate Heart of Mary without direct reference to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus because these two persons, one divine and one human, of whom their Two Hearts are symbols, were from all eternity united in the mind of God. Blessed Pope Pius IX declared this solemnly in the Bull Ineffabilis Deus in which he proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception when he stated that God by one and the same decree, had established the origin of Mary and the Incarnation of Divine Wisdom [ad illius Virginis primordia transferre, quæ uno eodemque decreto cum divinæ Sapientiæ incarnatione fuerant præstituta.]1 Precisely because these two persons are not equal we cannot speak of them in exactly the same way and yet they are not entirely different. Thus, we must speak of them in terms of the principal of analogy or “likeness in difference” and then the analogy between the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I trust that this necessary preliminary treatment will prove to be of value in the end. II. The Principal of Analogy Analogy, in the classical sense in which this term is used by St. Thomas Aquinas and his followers, denotes “a kind of predication midway between univocation and equivocation.” 2 Here is the Angelic Doctor’s own description of what he meant by analogous predication: It is evident that terms which are used in this way [i.e. analogically] are intermediate between univocal and equivocal terms.

* * * I. On the Nature of a Consecration Generally speaking, a consecration means a dedication of persons or things to the divine cult.

MARIOLOGY: PART II MOTHER OF THE CHURCH, ASSUMPTION, QUEEN OF HEAVEN AND MARIAN DEVOTION BY: REV. FR. PHILIP-MICHAEL F. TANGORRA, STL, JCL MOTHER OF THE CHURCH • As Mother of God (Mother of the True Body of Christ), Mary is Mother of the Church - the Mystical Body of Christ: Mary’s motherhood of the People of God, the Church, flows from her union with her Son, Jesus Christ. “This motherhood of Mary in the order of grace continues uninterruptedly from the consent which she loyally gave at the Annunciation and which she sustained without wavering beneath the cross, until the eternal fulfilment of all the elect. Taken up to heaven she did not lay aside this saving office but by her manifold intercession continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation .... Therefore, the Blessed Virgin is invoked in the Church under the titles of Advocate, Helper, Benefactress, and Mediatrix. (Vatican II, dogmatic constitution on the Church Lumen gentium 62: AAS 57 (1965) 63.)” • Pope St. Paul VI: (from the papal audience of Nov. 18, 1964, where Mary was given the title “Mother of the Church”: “Maria, as we know, occupies a most singular position, she too is a member of the Church, she is redeemed by Christ, she is our sister, but according to her election as the Mother of the Redeemer of humanity, and in accord with her perfect and eminent representation of the human race, she can rightly be called morally and typically the mother of all humanity, and especially ours, of us believers and redeemed, the Mother of the Church, the Mother of the Faithful.” ASSUMPTION • Body and Soul in Heaven: Seeing that Mary is Immaculate, her body already redeemed from the moment of her conception by the power of the Cross of Christ, after she died, her body and soul received their glorification — in accord with the post-Resurrection glory of Christ’s body — and she was brought into heaven.
