NOR ABSTRACT Scales are calcium carbonate and collagen-contained structures embedded within the fish epidermis and useful for species identification. This study aimed to describe morphological characteristics of scales and use the differences to prepare keys to species. Fishes were sampled from selected rivers of Tembat Forest Reserve, Hulu Terengganu. Specimens caught were from 3 families (Cyprinidae, Channidae, Nandidae) and 17 species. Each species was represented by ten individuals (size ranges 2.5 - 50 cm TL). The scales were removed, soaked in H2O2 (0.5%), NH3 (0.3%), DH2O and mounted between a pair of glass slides for digital photographing. The morphological descriptions were based on types of scales, distinctiveness of radii arrangement at the anterior field, radii cover, radii distribution, overall shape, focus position and focus pattern. Keys to species were constructed based on these scale morphological characters described. Measurements of scale total length (L), total width (W), rostral field length (L1) and caudal field length (L2) of the scales were taken using Image J software. The inter-specific variation among scales was indicated by L1/L, L2/L, L1/L2 and W/L indices through multiple comparison tests (ANOVA). It was found that all 17 species showed significant differences with at least one other species in all four indices. -
Percomorph Phylogeny: a Survey of Acanthomorphs and a New Proposal

David Johnson and Colin Patterson ABSTRACT The interrelationships of acanthomorph fishes are reviewed. We recognize seven mono- phyletic terminal taxa among acanthomorphs: Lampridiformes, Polymixiiformes, Paracan- thopterygii, Stephanoberyciformes, Beryciformes, Zeiformes, and a new taxon named Smeg- mamorpha. The Percomorpha, as currently constituted, are polyphyletic, and the Perciformes are probably paraphyletic. The smegmamorphs comprise five subgroups: Synbranchiformes (Synbranchoidei and Mastacembeloidei), Mugilomorpha (Mugiloidei), Elassomatidae (Elas- soma), Gasterosteiformes, and Atherinomorpha. Monophyly of Lampridiformes is justified elsewhere; we have found no new characters to substantiate the monophyly of Polymixi- iformes (which is not in doubt) or Paracanthopterygii. Stephanoberyciformes uniquely share a modification of the extrascapular, and Beryciformes a modification of the anterior part of the supraorbital and infraorbital sensory canals, here named Jakubowski's organ. Our Zei- formes excludes the Caproidae, and characters are proposed to justify the monophyly of the group in that restricted sense. The Smegmamorpha are thought to be monophyletic principally because of the configuration of the first vertebra and its intermuscular bone. Within the Smegmamorpha, the Atherinomorpha and Mugilomorpha are shown to be monophyletic elsewhere. Our Gasterosteiformes includes the syngnathoids and the Pegasiformes -

Small ornamental species are mostly preferable in aquarium industry. BK Mahapatra Gourami is one of the most valuable and popular in small ornamental fish world. In India presently 8 ICAR-Central Institute of indigenous Gourami species are very common and highly demanding. Ctenops nobilis is one of the Fisheries Education, Salt Lake highly demanding and important among the 8 indigenous Gourami species. It is the only known species City, Kolkata, India in its genus. The fish is mainly cold water species. The species is widely distributed but it is a naturally scarce species. As per IUCN Red list, 2010 status the species is assessed as Near Threatened for its J Maity Vidyasagar University, population declines in the wild. Very little data available of the fish resulting problems occur during Midnapore, West Bengal, India maintenance of the fish in aquarium. So the proper study on the fish, captive breeding and rearing procedure of the fish is very important to meet the increasing demand of the fish among aquarium hobbyist. -

A total of 57 species of fish belonging to 38 genera, 20 families and 8 orders were recorded from Kyunmyityoe In, Ayeyarwady river segment, Banmaw. Among the collected species order Cypriniformes was most dominant with 23 fish species (40%) followed by Siluriformes with 16 species (28%), Perciformes with 11 species (19%), Synbranchiformes with 3 species (5%), Clupeiformes, Osteoglossiformes, Beloniformes and Tetraodontiformes with one fish species (2% each). The largest number of species 46 species in each month of December and January and the smallest number of 20 species in April were recorded during the study period. Fish diet provides protein, fats and vitamins A and D. A large amount of phosphorous and other elements are also present in it. They have a good taste and are easily digestible (Humbe et al., 2014). Fishes have formed an important item of human diet from time immemorial and are primarily caught for this purpose. Though the freshwater bodies contribute only 0.1% of the total water of the planet, it harbors 40% of fish species. Fish displays the greatest biodiversity of the vertebrates with over 27,500 species including 41 percent of freshwater species (Nelson, 1994 and 2006). -

The limnological habitats are receptors of pollution, thus local fish species richness is a plausible biological indicator to reflect the quality of a particular water body. However, database on species occurrence that corresponds with the water physico-chemistry constituents is often not available. The problem is compounded by the lack of species identification description to assist those working on river and freshwater resource conservation projects. This paper attempts to fill the gaps in the context of Kampar River drainage. Based on sampling exercises conducted from October 2015 to March 2017, an annotated list with visual data for 56 species belonging to 44 genera and 23 families is presented. The water physico-chemistry data is also summarized with the corresponding visual data of limnological zones studied. The species diversity results are further compared with other local drainages and the correlation between area size and their relationship is expressed by y = 17.627e0.0601x. -

Rizal & Amirrudin B.A* Pusat Pengajian Sains Marin dan Sekitaran, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 21030 Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, Malaysia *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Tasek Bera Ramsar Site is an alluvial swamp with small area of open water and is an im- portant and unique freshwater ecosystem in Peninsular Malaysia. Research on fish fauna of Tasek Bera began more than 60 years ago. A recent survey has collected a total of 52 species belonging to 20 families of freshwater fishes bringing the total number of fish species known to date to 127 species from 30 families. Thirteen species are newly recorded for the ecosystem, comprising of mainly small, cryptic and bottom dwelling species that can be found among riparian vegetation or root system of riparian plants. The remaining species are common and can be found widely distributed throughout Peninsular Malaysia. The ich- thyofaunas of Tasek Bera are dominated by Cyprinidae (51 species), Siluridae (12 species), followed by Bagridae (nine species) and Osphronemidae (nine species). The available data showed that fish diversity of Tasek Bera ecosystem is highly diverse. Future research needs to consider the peripheral habitat in order to obtain a complete picture of the ichthyofauna diversity of Tasek Bera Ramsar Site for sound conservation and management. It is distinguished from its congeners by having the following combination of characters: a conspicuous black blotch on the superficial part of cleithrum; pointed soft dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins, the 2nd soft ray of pelvic-fin reaching slightly beyond the vent; 13 ‒ 14 pectoral-fin rays; circumpeduncular scales 14 ‒ 17; body depth 28.2 ‒ 33.8% of SL; interorbital distance 7.1 ‒ 9.4% of SL; and 28 number of vertebrae.
