Executive Summary Aim Environmental assessment of hydropower facilities commonly includes means of fish assem- blage impact metrics, as e.g. injuries or mortality. However, this hardly allows for conclusion at the population or community level. To overcome this significant knowledge gap and to enable more efficient assessments, this task aimed in developing a fish species classification system according to their species-specific sensitivity against mortality. As one result, most sensitive fish species were identified as suitable candidates for in depth population effects and impact studies. Another objective was providing the biological and autecological baseline for developing a fish population hazard index for the European fish fauna. Methods The literature has been extensively reviewed and analysed for life history traits of fish providing resilience against and recovery from natural disturbances. The concept behind is that species used to cope with high natural mortality have evolved buffer mechanisms against, which might also foster recovery from human induced disturbances. -

Two species, namely C. keyvani and C. faridpaki had been already described from this distribution range. However, previous study revealed that C. keyvani is a junior synonym of C. faridpaki, therefore populations of the eastern part of the Sefid River are C. faridpaki and those of the western part of this basin represent an undescribed species misidentified as C. keyvani in previous studies. Here we describe and compare it with other species of this genus from Iran based on morphological and molecular (COI barcode region) characters. Combining Morphology and Genetics in Resolving Taxonomy–A Systematic Revision of Spined Loaches (Genus Cobitis; Cypriniformes, Actinopterygii) in the Adriatic Watershed Ivana Buj1*, Radek Sˇ anda2, Zoran Marcˇic´1, Marko C´ aleta3, Milorad Mrakovcˇic´1 1 Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, Zagreb, Croatia, 2 National Museum, Prague, Czech Republic, 3 Faculty of Teacher Education, University of Zagreb, Zagreb, Croatia Abstract Taxonomic investigation of spined loaches from Dalmatia and Herzegovina was conducted on specimens from 14 localities. The results of the detailed morphological investigations were combined with genetic data (based on one mitochondrial and two nuclear genes) in order to resolve the taxonomic status of each Cobitis population. Among the investigated features of external morphology, the appearance of spots on the caudal fin base turned out to have the greatest diagnostic value. Furthermore, the number of branched fin rays enabled the discrimination of several species. No morphometric character alone could ensure determination of any Cobitis species. Nevertheless, groups of populations that are more similar in their body shapes correspond to mitochondrial phylogenetic lineages. Based on molecular genetic markers, Dalmatian and Herzegovinian spined loaches form independent lineages inside the Adriatic phylogenetic group. Mitochondrial DNA phylogenetic reconstruction revealed six monophyletic lineages, corresponding to six species distributed in the investigated area. The population distributed in Mostarsko blato karstic field in Bosnia and Herzegovina is described as a new species 1 based on a unique combination of morphological characters: a single triangular Canestrini scale; usually 5 /2 branched anal 1 fin rays, 6 /2 branched dorsal fin rays, 14 branched caudal fin rays; no spots in the surface pigmentation layer on the caudal fin base; scales on the body very small. -

DESCRIPCIÓN La colmilleja es una especie de pequeño tamaño que no suele alcanzar los 15 cm de longitud to tal. Su cuerpo es alargado con cuatro filas de manchas oscuras y redondeadas. La cabeza presenta pequeñas manchas oscuras y debajo del ojo existe una pequeña espina que le sirve par defenderse de los depredadores. La boca presenta tres pares de barbillas. Carece de vejiga natatoria. Las escamas son ovales muy pequeñas y apenas perceptibles a simple vista. La línea lateral es incompleta. Existe un dimorfismo sexual muy acusado. Los ma chos son de menor tamaño y las manchas laterales tienden a formar líne• Clase: Actinopterygii Orden: Cypriniformes as bien definidas. Acanthop sis taenia paludicola Berg, 1932. BIOLOGÍA Y ECOLOGÍA Cobitis taenia haasi Klausewitz, Sufren una regresión muy fuerte habiendo desaparecido de varios ríos 1955. Cobitis paludicola Berg, 1932. de las cuencas del Ebro y Guadalquivir principalmente. En algunas po blaciones existe una fuerte desproporción de sexos a favor de las hem bras. Este fenómeno parece demostrar que estas poblaciones se encuentran en peligro. La especie vive en las partes medias y bajas de los ríos, con poca corriente y fondos de arena y grava y vegetación acuática. -

This paper presents a critical assessment of the current status and geographical distribution of loaches (Cobitidae, Nemacheilidae) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This closes a gap in research knowledge with only general distribution data currently available. In the Danube catchment four cobitid (Cobitis elongata, C. elongatoides, Misgurnus fossilis, Sabanejewia balcanica) and one nemacheilid species (Barbatula barbatula) were recorded, while the Adriatic Sea catchment hosts three spined loaches: C. narentana, C. illyrica, and C. herzegoviniensis and nemachilid B. barbatula. Growth patterns of the golden loach, Sabanejewia balcanica were examined in the Rijeka River in Central Croatia on a total of 77 specimens collected in a single sampling session in June 2006. No significant difference was found in total body length between males and females. Age was determined from otoliths. Both males and females live 4 years, though due to the sampling period, no 0+ age fish were found in this study. The length-weight relationship was calculated as W=2x10-6 TL3.3229 for males and W=3x10-6 TL3.2811 for females, indicating positively allometric growth. According to the growth factor k, growth of males was three times faster than that of females. We found significant morphological differences between specimens inhabiting the Kupa River and those from its right tri- butary the Petrinjčica River. Results of ANOVA analysis were statistically significant for 17 measure- ments and all statistically significant parameters were considerably higher at the Petrinjčica River sites. These differences are probably caused by the spatial isolation of these two populations due to artifici- al and natural barriers on the Petrinjčica River and different ecological features of habitats in the Kupa and the Petrinjčica River. Journal of Applied Ichthyology, 32: 240–248. doi: 10.1111/jai.13027 Summary The number of threatened freshwater fish species in Spain is among the highest recorded in Europe and includes a high percentage of endemic taxa. We investigated the distribution of Spanish freshwater fish to identify priority areas for conservation and assess the extent to which freshwater fish are included in the existing network of protected areas. We considered those threatened species recorded in the Spanish National inventories. From these data, several biodiversity indices were calculated and analysed. Our results reveal important discrepancies between the national and international assessments of conservation status. The current Spanish national catalogue requires updating to reconcile these inconsistencies. Several important areas for the conservation of freshwater fish lie outside protected areas. Our results encourage the establishment of protected areas specifically for freshwater environments.
