THE AGA KHAN UNIVERSITY

EAST AFRICA CONVOCATION

MAY 22, 2021

GREETINGS FROM THE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

Welcome to Aga Khan University, a university dedicated to empowering people with knowledge, skills and values to guide their own destinies, and to make their rightful contributions as members of a global community. From the mandate of its charter, to the reality of its people, programmes and sites, Aga Khan University is an international university. As part of the Aga Khan Development Network, and with campuses and programmes on three continents, AKU continues to build on its growing reputation for the quality of its programmes, in its ability to undertake problem-based learning, and in its role as an agent of change through innovation and research. We are proud of the role our students and graduates play in improving the institutions and quality of life in the developing world.

Members of the University’s faculty and staff share in the pride of our graduates, as today we recognise your mastery of a professional field, which, at AKU, means mastery at an international standard. To the graduates and their families: this is a day of great celebration as you pass this important milestone. We know that you have earned your degree through dedication, hard work and meritorious performance. Congratulations.

1 GREETINGS FROM ALUMNI AFFAIRS

Congratulations on your graduation and for completing a challenging journey embarked upon years ago.

Although your days as a student at AKU may officially be over, you will always remain a member of the AKU family.

With your graduation, you automatically become a member of the Aga Khan University Alumni Association. Its membership includes all graduates of AKU, who are making an impact in more than 50 countries around the world. As an alumnus/alumna you will benefit from this extraordinary community of AKU alumni that will provide lasting friendships, and opportunities for professional and social networking.

The Office of Alumni Affairs looks forward to staying in touch as you embark on this exciting new journey. Working closely with alumni, we organise a rich variety of programmes, activities, and reunions for our alumni community.

We keep you updated through diverse communications, including the AKU alumni webpages (www.aku.edu/alumni), alumni e-newsletters, and through social media, both Facebook and Instagram, where you can follow news from campus and from other alumni. We encourage you to create a LinkedIn profile which will help you to expand your professional links with AKU and with your fellow alumni.

AKU benefits enormously from the continuous involvement of its alumni. Many are faculty and staff, others are volunteers, mentors, and donors, who share their expertise, advice and support to advance the mission of their alma mater.

Today, as you join a community of inspiring and outstanding alumni, we know that you, in your own way, will make an impact and carry forward the mission and values of AKU.

Congratulations, once again!

2 THE AGA KHAN UNIVERSITY

In 1983, His Highness the Aga Khan, the Founder and Chancellor, while accepting the Charter of the Aga Khan University had said, “The overall aim of the Aga Khan University will be to make clear and rational judgments as to which foreseeable future needs of the developing countries require new educational programmes and, having identified those openings, to address them by the appropriate means, setting the highest standards possible whether in teaching, research or service.”

“… Inevitably, priorities will alter with the years as time and history unfold, and the University must be able to adapt itself to change. But one thing will remain constant: the mission of preparing graduates, men and women, to play constructive, worthwhile and responsible roles in society.”

Starting from a single campus in Pakistan, the University has grown to include five campuses and three teaching sites on three continents – Asia, Europe and Africa. New medical facilities have been constructed; innovative programmes that offer quality higher education introduced; and the Internet and technology tapped to overcome geographic isolation and treat patients in some of the poorest areas of the world.

Paralleling its growth in size and sphere has been its student body: the University is proud to call more than 16,200 individuals as alumni in the fields of education, nursing, medicine and Muslim cultures.

In marking more than 35 years in Pakistan, AKU has truly become an embodiment of the vision laid out by the Chancellor. Our education programmes serve as national and international benchmarks, our student body is diverse and pluralistic, our alumni are global front runners, and our faculty are renowned for both their ability to groom students to be trailblazers and their pioneering work in the developing world.

It is with great pride that today we can say that the Aga Khan University is a creator and disseminator of new knowledge, a builder of leaders, an engine of innovation, a bridge between cultures, and an institution that sparks change.

3 THE UNIVERSITY SEAL

The Seal of Aga Khan University is a visual representation of the principles inherent in the founding of the University.

The circular form of the Seal, with its different levels of imagery contained in concentric circles, has its visual roots in the rosettes of early Islamic periods.

The circle also symbolises the world and reflects the internationality of Aga Khan University. At the centre of the Seal is a star, or sun. Light is a universal symbol for the enlightenment that education provides. The light emanating from the star is also symbolic of Nur (Divine light).

The star incorporates 49 points to commemorate the University’s founding by His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan, the 49th Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims.

The outer ring circumscribes a Qur’anic Ayat (3:103) rendered in classic Thuluth script and reads as follows:

And hold fast, All together, by the rope Which God (stretches out for you), And be not divided among yourselves, And remember with gratitude God’s favour on you: For ye were enemies And He joined your hearts In love, so that by His grace, Ye became brethren

21 ACADEMIC REGALIA

Aga Khan University’s academic regalia is a unique interpretation of the traditional academic cap, gown and hood. The University’s head gear and gowns are called the Jamiapoash. This term is derived from the Arabic jamia, meaning ‘institution of higher learning’, and the Persian poash, meaning ‘apparel’. The Jamiapoash comprises a Khila’at, meaning ‘robe of honour’ in Arabic and a Sirpoash, meaning ‘headwear’ in Persian.

The Khila’at is the outer robe, very much like a qabaa or jubba, worn in many countries of the Middle East and North Africa, or a chugha, worn in parts of Pakistan and India. It is an unpleated, unflared, calf-length overgarment, with bell-shaped short sleeves, which can be closed at the front if desired.

The Sirpoash brings together a turban and a kulah, the two most distinctive forms of headwear worn historically throughout the Islamic world, with a tassel on the right.

The Jamiapoash has been designed to symbolise the identity of the University. The basic colours of green and white have been derived from the official seal of the University while the decorative elements have been taken from the calligraphy, motifs and designs used in the architecture and interior design of the institution.

Distinctive motifs have been embroidered along the front of the Khila’at, on the arms and cuffs, and on the back using different colours on a variety of backgrounds. Their arrangement serves to identify the ranks of members of the University such as the graduands, members of faculty, members of the Board of Trustees, the Chief Guest and the Chancellor.

Graduate and undergraduate gowns have a six-centimetre braid bearing a green motif on a white background with heavy gold lines on either side of the braid running along the face, back collar and continuing around the base of the gown and cuffs. Each arm bears a vertical green motif on a white background trimmed in gold. The Master’s gown is distinguished from the Bachelor’s gown by adding a second set of heavy gold lines; the Doctoral gowns have a third set of gold lines that run along facing, back collar and the base of the tunic and cuffs. Diploma graduands wear a green tunic with a white fabric trim. The robes of the members of faculty have an additional braid in gold along the front and on the cuffs, with a gold motif on the arms and at the back. The Board of Trustees’ gown has a second gold band on the front and on the cuffs alongside the decorations of the faculty dress. The Chief Guest’s robe is distinguished by very elaborate gold embroidery on a teak brown background. The Chancellor’s gown is unique in its gold embroidery on a white robe.

The colour coding of the Sirpoash for each rank follows the colour combination of the Khila’at and its embroidery, with the higher ranks being distinguished by gold bands.

The regalia is worn during Convocation, graduation and other formal and ceremonial occasions.
