THE AGA KHAN UNIVERSITY EAST AFRICA CONVOCATION MAY 22, 2021 GREETINGS FROM THE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT Welcome to Aga Khan University, a university dedicated to empowering people with knowledge, skills and values to guide their own destinies, and to make their rightful contributions as members of a global community. From the mandate of its charter, to the reality of its people, programmes and sites, Aga Khan University is an international university. As part of the Aga Khan Development Network, and with campuses and programmes on three continents, AKU continues to build on its growing reputation for the quality of its programmes, in its ability to undertake problem-based learning, and in its role as an agent of change through innovation and research. We are proud of the role our students and graduates play in improving the institutions and quality of life in the developing world. Members of the University’s faculty and staff share in the pride of our graduates, as today we recognise your mastery of a professional field, which, at AKU, means mastery at an international standard. To the graduates and their families: this is a day of great celebration as you pass this important milestone. We know that you have earned your degree through dedication, hard work and meritorious performance. Congratulations. 1 GREETINGS FROM ALUMNI AFFAIRS Congratulations on your graduation and for completing a challenging journey embarked upon years ago. Although your days as a student at AKU may officially be over, you will always remain a member of the AKU family. With your graduation, you automatically become a member of the Aga Khan University Alumni Association. Its membership includes all graduates of AKU, who are making an impact in more than 50 countries around the world. As an alumnus/alumna you will benefit from this extraordinary community of AKU alumni that will provide lasting friendships, and opportunities for professional and social networking. The Office of Alumni Affairs looks forward to staying in touch as you embark on this exciting new journey. Working closely with alumni, we organise a rich variety of programmes, activities, and reunions for our alumni community. We keep you updated through diverse communications, including the AKU alumni webpages (www.aku.edu/alumni), alumni e-newsletters, and through social media, both Facebook and Instagram, where you can follow news from campus and from other alumni. We encourage you to create a LinkedIn profile which will help you to expand your professional links with AKU and with your fellow alumni. AKU benefits enormously from the continuous involvement of its alumni. Many are faculty and staff, others are volunteers, mentors, and donors, who share their expertise, advice and support to advance the mission of their alma mater. Today, as you join a community of inspiring and outstanding alumni, we know that you, in your own way, will make an impact and carry forward the mission and values of AKU. Congratulations, once again! But one thing will remain constant: the mission of preparing graduates, men and women, to play constructive, worthwhile and responsible roles in society.” Starting from a single campus in Pakistan, the University has grown to include five campuses and three teaching sites on three continents – Asia, Europe and Africa. New medical facilities have been constructed; innovative programmes that offer quality higher education introduced; and the Internet and technology tapped to overcome geographic isolation and treat patients in some of the poorest areas of the world. Paralleling its growth in size and sphere has been its student body: the University is proud to call more than 16,200 individuals as alumni in the fields of education, nursing, medicine and Muslim cultures. In marking more than 35 years in Pakistan, AKU has truly become an embodiment of the vision laid out by the Chancellor. Our education programmes serve as national and international benchmarks, our student body is diverse and pluralistic, our alumni are global front runners, and our faculty are renowned for both their ability to groom students to be trailblazers and their pioneering work in the developing world. It is with great pride that today we can say that the Aga Khan University is a creator and disseminator of new knowledge, a builder of leaders, an engine of innovation, a bridge between cultures, and an institution that sparks change. aku.edu 3 THE UNIVERSITY SEAL The Seal of Aga Khan University is a visual representation of the principles inherent in the founding of the University. The circular form of the Seal, with its different levels of imagery contained in concentric circles, has its visual roots in the rosettes of early Islamic periods. The circle also symbolises the world and reflects the internationality of Aga Khan University. At the centre of the Seal is a star, or sun. Light is a universal symbol for the enlightenment that education provides. The light emanating from the star is also symbolic of Nur (Divine light). The star incorporates 49 points to commemorate the University’s founding by His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan, the 49th Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims. The outer ring circumscribes a Qur’anic Ayat (3:103) rendered in classic Thuluth script and reads as follows: And hold fast, All together, by the rope Which God (stretches out for you), And be not divided among yourselves, And remember with gratitude God’s favour on you: For ye were enemies And He joined your hearts In love, so that by His grace, Ye became brethren 4 TANZANIA 5 PROGRAMME Global Ceremony Academic Procession Tilawat - Invocation Welcome Address FIROZ RASUL President, The Aga Khan University Convocation Address by the Chief Guest MELINDA FRENCH GATES Co-Chair and Trustee, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Address by the Chancellor HIS HIGHNESS THE AGA KHAN University Awards of Distinction Student Valedictorian Student Awards Ceremony in Tanzania Anthems Conferring of Degrees School of Nursing and Midwifery Bachelor of Science in Nursing Medical College Master of Medicine Institute for Educational Development Master of Education Student Valedictorian Anthems Academic Procession 6 SCHOOL OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING Abdallah Yusuph Magreth Noel Mbaruku Adelina John Maria P Joseph Alli H Alli Martine Balele Asnath Samson Mtaki Mary Solomon Msuya Asumin Abdul Mkalagale Memory Nkhambule Elitha Elias Kayage Milcah Kidana Bulaya Esther Elia Kabona Nadhra H Golo Fatma Said Salim Neema Yasin Fatuma Bwire Ninael Geoffrey Nandrie Goreth M Temba Nour Hassan Bafagih Hellen Genesi Mosha Rabia Fadhili Minja Highness Zebedayo Mlay Rahab Benjamin Hilitruda Wenceslaus Massao Rebeca O Amsi Hussein Salum Ruth A Mosi Jackline Bartalome Francis Ruth Rabson Msanganzila Jackline Urio Sabra Mohamed Haji Janel F Mkiramweni Said Mzee Said Jeneth Joram Kipokola Sarah Joseph Msuya Kangwile Matare Sauda Ally Kemilembe Tryphone Ngonzi Selina Sylvester Lipipa Lida Wilson Milahula Somoe Khalfan Mohammed Lidya Noel Masanjala Timba John Loise W Kabui Victoria Exaud Urima Lucia K Arobogast Wilson Paulo Lomnyack Lucy Laurent Kyombo Zainab Masoud Ibrahim Magreth Modest Lutagandama Zaituni Mtumwa Mzee MEDICAL COLLEGE MASTER OF MEDICINE Family Medicine General Surgery Internal Medicine Davis Leonard Rubagumya Elizabeth Elibariki Mmari Hanifa Mbithe Hannah Moore Isaac Herman Mawalla Julius Msukuya Neelam Ismail Selestin David Mpiri Nuru Abdallah Kondo 7 INSTITUTE FOR EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT MASTER OF EDUCATION Abas Rajabu Mbanga Linet Adhiambo Agele Agnes Dominick Lukiya Mirembe Aithophel Mzumbi Mwaisaka Mary Mghoi Mwandashi Amon Sifuni Mrutu Maxphiler Jepkosgei Rotich Beatrice Adhiambo Okech Mutebi Ibrahim Benjamin Agalo Oyoo Mwangeka M.
