Olympic Family Guide | 05 Welcome Message from the POCOG President LEE Hee-beom President & CEO of the PyeongChang 2018 Organizing Committee Welcome to Korea. Welcome to PyeongChang! It is my pleasure to begin by welcoming all Olympic Family members to the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018. We had a dream. A dream to bring back the enthusiasm of the Olympic Summer Games Seoul 1988 by hosting the Olympic Winter Games in Korea. I still vividly remember the scene in Durban at the 123rd IOC Session when PyeongChang was announced as the host city of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. It is impossible to describe how happy we all were when our third bid for the Games was successful. Over the past seven years of preparation, things were not always easy, and we had to take painstaking effort. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to each and every one of you who contributed and helped us to reach this special moment. The celebration for all is about to begin! 08 | PyeongChang 2018 Slogan Passion. Connected PyeongChang 2018 hopes to initiate a world in which everyone is connected with a shared passion, opening new horizons for the continued growth of winter sports. Emblem The emblem symbolises a world open to everyone. It combines the image of ice and snow, winter sports stars (athletes), and people from all over the world – coming together in PyeongChang where heaven meets earth. The symbol ‘⺱’ represents the first consonant in the first syllable of PyeongChang in the Korean alphabet, Hangeul, while ‘⺮’ depicts the first consonant in the second syllable of PyeongChang in Hangeul. Mascot Soohorang Soohorang, the trustworthy mascot for the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, is a white tiger which has long been considered as Korea’s guardian animal. ‘Sooho’, meaning ‘protection’ in Korean, indicates protection provided to the athletes, spectators and other participants of the 2018 Games. ‘Rang’ comes from the middle syllable of ‘Ho-rang-i', the Korean word for ‘Tiger’ and is also the last syllable of ‘Jeongseon A-ri-rang’, a cherished traditional folk song of Gangwon Province, where the Games will be held. Despite issues with the increasing burden on host cities due to the expanding scale of the Olympics, three consecutive Games are to be held in East Asia. Why would multiple cities in East Asia want to take on the burden of hosting the Olympics? There are many case studies of research into mega sports events in North America and Europe, but little research has been conducted to date regarding the event hosting process in Asia. In order to fill this gap, this article will illustrate how mega sports events such as the Olympics have been positioned in East Asia as opportunities for regional development. The example of the preparations for the PyeongChang Olympics will be analysed to elucidate the structural difficulties in regional development through hosting mega sports events. Contents 1. Introduction 2. Literature Review 3. Historical Trends Regarding Mega Sports Events in Korea 4.
