This thematic group studies the rubrics, devoted to landscape vocabulary, different soil types, water bodies, atmospheric phenomena, celestial sphere. The material, mainly from Khalkha-Mongolian and Old Written Mongolian languages is subject to the analysis; the data from Buryat and Kalmyk languages were also included, as they were presented in these languages. The Buryat material was mainly closer to the Khalkha-Mongolian one. For comparison, the material, mainly from the Old Turkic language, showing the presence of similar words, was included; it testified about the so-called Turkic-Mongolian lexical commonness. The analysis of inner forms of these revealed common lexemes in the majority of cases allowed determining their Turkic origin, proved by wide occurrence of these lexemes in Turkic languages and Turkologists' acknowledgement of their Turkic origin. The presence of great quantity of common vocabulary, which origin is determined as Turkic, testifies about repeated ancient contacts of Mongolian and Turkic languages, taking place in historical retrospective, resulting in hybridization of Mongolian vocabulary. -

As the Uzbek literary language develops, so do the Uzbek dialects. This article describes the history of the development of the Uzbek language, its dialects and some features of these dialects, scientific and substantiated information about the areas of distribution. Key words:Turkic languages, the Altai language family, Karluk,Kypchak, Oguz,heKarluk-Khorezm languages, the Uyghur language, Indo-Iranian languages, Fergana dialects, urban dialects. Uzbek language is the official language of the Republic of Uzbekistan. More than 34,5 million people live in Uzbekistan, over 70% of the population consider Uzbek as their native language. About 26.5 million people speak the Uzbek language, moreover, this language is spread not only on the territory of the Republic of Uzbekistan, but also in other Asian states: in Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Turkey, in the People's Republic of China and in Russia [7]. The modern Uzbek language belongs to the Turkic languages of the Altai language family. However, different linguists classify the Turkic languages in different ways, based on various characteristics, which, at times, are not always obvious. Traditionally, the Uzbek language belongs to the eastern (Karluk) group of the Turkic language group. Along with Turkish and Azerbaijani languages, Uzbek is considered one of the most common languages of this group[1;5]. -
The Problem of a Turkic Etymology of the Slavonic Word *Baranъ 'Ram'

Introductory remarks More than ten years ago I presented my opinion and my doubts concerning the Turkic origin of the Slavonic word *baranъ ‘ram’. They constituted part of a lon- ger study (Stachowski 2005: 438–441) in which other words were also discussed but none of them appeared in the title of the paper. Consequently those remarks may have escaped the attention of interested scholars which is why I have felt impelled to explain my position in a special, more detailed paper. The present article is divided into two parts, the fi rst of them being an overview of some important publications (though by far not all – it is highly recommended that this list be complemented by data adduced in Leschber 2017), mostly dictionaries which have infl uenced our understanding of Slavonic etymology to a considerable extent. My aim is not to present all etymologists’ views and all types of published sugges- tions (the more so as they often are actually identical conjectures rewritten in various constellations). I am rather going to show the place of Turkic etymology among other etymological proposals, that is to indicate in which infl uential publications a Turkic etymology was accepted or omitted, as well as to present at least one generally un- known article (Novikova 1979) that, however, is likely to arouse some interest among Slavonic etymologists. In the second part of my paper I present my comments on some formulations encountered in various studies published up to the moment of writing. -

In Xinjiang the international lingua franca English, the national official language Mandarin Chinese, and major Turkic languages such as Uyghur and Kazakh interact and compete for linguistic prestige in different social scenarios. The power relations between the Turkic languages, including the Uyghur language, and Mandarin Chinese is one in which minority languages are surrounded by a dominant state language supported through various institutions such as school and mass media. The much greater symbolic capital that the “legitimate language” Mandarin Chinese carries enables its native speakers to have easier access than the native Turkic speakers to jobs in the labor market. Therefore, many Uyghur parents face the dilemma of choosing between maintaining their cultural and linguistic identity and making their children more socioeconomically mobile. The entry of the global language English and the recent capitalist development in China has led to English education becoming market-oriented and commodified, which has further complicated the linguistic picture in Xinjiang. -
An Interdisciplinary Survey of South Siberia
Alexis Schrubbe REEES Upper Division Undergraduate Course Mock Syllabus Change and Continuity: An Interdisciplinary Survey of South Siberia This is a 15 week interdisciplinary course surveying the peoples of South-Central Siberia. The parameters of this course will be limited to a specific geographic area within a large region of the Russian Federation. This area is East of Novosibirsk but West of Ulan-Ude, North of the Mongolian Border (Northwest of the Altai Range) and South of the greater Lake-Baikal Region. This course will not cover the Far East nor the Polar North. This course will be a political, historical, religious, and anthropological exploration of the vast cultural landscape within the South-Central Siberian area. The course will have an introductory period consisting of a brief geographical overview, and an historical short-course. The short-course will cover Steppe history and periodized Russian history. The second section of the course will overview indigenous groups located within this region limited to the following groups: Tuvan, Buryat, Altai, Hakass/Khakass, Shor, Soyot. The third section will cover the first Russian explorers/fur trappers, the Cossacks, the Old Believers, the Decembrists, and waves of exiled people to the region. Lastly, the final section will discuss contemporary issues facing the area. The objective of the course is to provide a student with the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the complex chronology of human presence and effect in South-Central Siberia. The class will foster the ability to analyze, summarize, and identify waves of influence upon the area. The overarching goal of the course is to consider the themes of “change” versus “continuity” in regard to inhabitants of South Siberia. -
Russia Country Report: Multicultural Experience in Education
RUSSIA COUNTRY REPORT: MULTICULTURAL EXPERIENCE IN EDUCATION Leila Salekhova, Ksenia Grigorieva Kazan Federal University (RUSSIAN FEDERATION) Abstract The Russian Federation (RF) is a large country with the total area of 17,075,400 sq km. The RF has the world’s ninth-largest population of 146,600,000 people. According to the 2010 census, ethnic Russian people constitute up to 81% of the total population. In total, over 185 different ethnic groups live within the RF borders. Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Judaism are Russia’s traditional religions. Russia is a multinational and multicultural state. The large number of different ethnic groups represents the result of a complicated history of migrations, wars and revolutions. The ethnic diversity of Russia has significantly influenced the nature of its development and has had a strong influence on the state education policy. The article gives a detailed analysis of the key factors determining educational opportunities for different RF ethnic groups. A complicated ethnic composition of Russia’s population and its multi-confessional nature cause the educational system to fulfill educational, ethno-cultural and consolidating functions by enriching the educational content with ethnic peculiarities and at the same time providing students with an opportunity to study both in native (non-Russian) and non-native (Russian) languages. The paper provides clear and thorough description of Russian educational system emphasizing positive features like high literacy and educational rates especially in technical areas that are due to the results of the educational system functioning nowadays. Teacher education is provided in different types of educational institutions allowing their graduates to start working as teachers immediately after graduating. -

Despite a distinct twenty-first century identity, Turkmen culture and traditions historically overlapped with that of other Turks. The term “Turkic” refers to this cultural and linguistic heritage that all Turkic-language speaking groups share. Nevertheless, a separate Turkmen sense of identity was born out of their particular historical experience. A nomadic heritage, distinctively Oguz dialects, and tribal traditions contribute greatly to the identity that sets Turkmen apart from other Turkic groups and shape a specifically Turkmen sense of ethnic identity. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Declension system of the Turkic languages is characterized by a large number of cases and a variety of forms of cases. The research works indicate the number of cases in the Turkic languages in different ways, in some languages they are considered to be 6, and in the others 7 or 8. There are different opinions about the number of cases in the language of the ancient Turkic written monuments, known as the source of the Turkic languages. Some scholars defi ne 11 cases and some say that the number of main cases is 7. In the language of the Orkhon, Yenisei and Talas monuments there are hidden or null form of cases, as well as the meaning of cases can be given by individual words. Also, some endings correspond with the formants of other cases according to the form or comply with other formants of cases according to the meaning. -

At the present time, a series of questions concerning an etymology of the future participle –ası/-esi in the modern Turkic languages does not have a due and exhaustive treatment in the Turkology. In the course of the research, similar and distinctive features of the future participles –ası/-esi in Turkic languages were revealed. It should be noted that comparative-historical researches of the grammatical elements in the modern Turkic languages have gained a considerable scientific meaning and undoubted actuality. The actuality of the paper’s theme is conditioned by these factors. Introduction This article is devoted to comparative historical analysis of the future tense participle –ası/- esi in modern Turkic languages. The purpose of this article is to study a comparative historical analysis of the future tense participle –ası/-esi in Turkic languages. It also aims to identify various characteristic phonetic, morphological, and syntactic features in modern Turkic languages. This article also analyses materials of different dialects of Turkic languages, and their old written monuments. The results of the detailed etymological analysis of the future tense participle –ası/-esi help to reveal the peculiarities of lexical-semantic and morphological structure of the Turkic languages’ participle. -

Bu makale Türkmen halısının bazı özelliklerini dilbilimsel açıdan ele alıyor.Yazıda uzun zamandır tartışma konusu olan halı sözcüğünün nasıl türediği açıklanıyor. Halı terminolojisinde ‘dokumya başlamak’ anlamındaki yügürt- fiili incelenirken Türkmen ağızlarında Türkmen çadırının, toplandıktan sonra yerde bıraktığı daire biçimli izi için yaygın olarak kullanılan yügürt > yüwürt sözcüğünün yardımıyla yurt sözcüğünün nasıl türediği ortaya çıkarılıyor. Aynı şekilde Eski Tükçede ‘kocanın kardeşi’ anlamına gelen yurç sözcüğünün etimolojisi de açıklığa kavuşturuluyor. Nikah kıymak (Azerbaycan Türkçesinde kesmek) birleşik fiili konusunda kimse pek kafa yormamış ve bu söz olduğu gibi kabul edilmiştir. Arapça nikah sözcüğünün Eski Türkçedeki karşılığı ‘düğüm’ anlamındaki tügün’dür. Bu yazıda nikah/ tügün kıymak deyiminin halyla ilgili olduğu açıklanıyor. İngilizcede evlenmek için to tie the not/ düğüm atmak deyimi kullanılırken bu deyimin Türkçe karşılığı tügünü kıymak/ düğümü kesmek’tir. Bunun halı ile ilgili olduğunu bir Türkmen evlilik ritüelinden öğreniyoruz: imam nikah kıyarken Türkmen kadın da bir düğümü keser gibi elindeki makası sürekli açıp kapar. Öte yandan Türkmen halısının en önemli desenine göl denir; her Türkmen boyunun kendisine özgü göl‘ü vardır. Bu desen Şamanizm’in yir sub kültü ile ilgilidir. Yir kavramı da Şamanizm’de kutsal sayılan dağ ile ifade edilir. Dağda yaşayan hayvanlar, meselâ dağ koçu konurbaş da kutsaldır. Türkmen halk müziğinde konurbaş mukamı vardır. -

This article deals with phrase logical units connected with nature from the point of view of "Linguistic Map of the World" theory. Bases of "The cult concept" in Turkic languages, including Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Uzbek are shown; their ethnic linguistic and ethno cultural feature of the use. In any people, the "Cult" concept in system of the spiritual and cultural concept takes the place. "The spiritual culture is a view of people of world around, religious knowledge, character, believing, ability to learn through other concepts. By itself a word cult according to the abstract description is very difficult. The lexeme of the word "Cult" is grouped in wide group of such concepts as, "to trust", "to pray", "to admire", "to respect". The cult is part of traditional religion, religious trust, part custom and traditions.
