(Lk. 5:4). St. Aloysius Minor Seminary has taken these words as the motto for the academic year 2016-2017. By "going deep" we find our Christian vocation and mission especially in having a personal relationshion with the living Christ. When Peter and his companions acted according to the command of the Lord, they had a miraculous catch (Lk. 5:6). In the same way, our Seminarians strive to develop a deeper relationship with Jesus in everything we do, we are, and we are called to be. In many areas of life, especially in our discipleship, we can work so hard and seem to have so little to show for it. -

THE CELEBRATIONS IN SOUTH INDIA IN HONOUR OF ST THOMAS ANt) ST FRANCIS XA VIER HE CELEBRATIONS in India to commemorate the nineteenth centenary of the coming of St Thomas the Apostle and the fourt~ T centenary of the death of St Francis Xavier took place ~ .~ Ernakulam. It is a big city and business centre on the west coast ofSouthetij India, facing the beautiful harbour of Cochin. There are several educational institutions and Catholic churches in the city, and th~ metropolitans of the two hierarchies-Latin and Syrian-have thei# residences there. Though other religious communities are numerically strong, the Catholics wield a great influence in the city. Ernakulam had. the rare privilege of witnessing both St Thomas and St Francis anq hearing from them the message of Christ. Cardinal Norman Thomas Gilroy, Archbishop of Sydney,' presided over the centenary celebrations as Papal Legate. ani 28th December at 8 p.m., he arrived at Ernakulam in a specian~ train, and was received at the railway station by His Grace the Most Rev. Joseph Attippetty, PH.D., D.D., Archbishop of Verapoly and His Grace, the Most Rev. Augustine Kandathil, D.D., Archbishop of Ernakulam. Several bishops from other parts of India were also present. Over a thousand priests took part in the reception~ Thousands of religious of both sexes came to attend the celebrations. Over a million of laity thronged to witness the function, and among them several thousands of non-Catholics also were included. The Cardinal went in procession to the Herbert grounds, where the celebrations were held, and was there given a civic reception. -

This Calendar is prepared in accordance with the decision of the Synod of the Syro-Malabar Bishops held in November 6 – 18, 1995. 2. The readings of the Sundays and other important days are given in the Calendar as per the direction of the Supplementum Mysteriorum and Ordo published by Rome in 1959 –’60. The long readings have been reduced, while the complete version of them are given in the brackets. Readings of ordinary days are selected as per the need required. 3. The division of the Liturgical Year of the Syro-Malabar Church is followed according to the Lectionary System of the East Syrian tradition. The liturgical calendar is divided into nine seasons. The spirit of each season is given in the introduction. 4. The Liturgical year is centered on the divine mysteries of salvation. These salvific events are: the birth of Jesus (Annunciation and Christmas), baptism (Epiphany), passion and death (Great Lent), resurrection and ascension (Resurrection), pentecost (Apostles and Summer), transfiguration and exaltation of the cross (Elia-Cross- Moses), and finally, the second coming of Jesus and the glorification of the Church (Dedication of the Church). 5. The feasts are divided into three categories according to their importance in the Syro-Malabar Church. -

Thus began the perennial quest for truth. De Paul Institute of Religion and Philosophy is a centre that aims at accompanying supportively anyone with a daring and resolute mind, on this challenging and arduous journey towards Truth. The motto of the Institute is satyenamukti. It is inspired by the words of Jesus that ―truth shall make you free‖ (Jn 8. 32). The lotus flower at the base of the emblem points to the rootedness of the Institute in the rich cultural and religious traditions of India. The chained pair of hands, open and raised upward represents a fettered humanity‘s yearning for total liberation; the broken chain reminds that truth liberates us from all kinds of fetters. The open hands, when viewed as the wings of a dove, bring to mind the opening words of the encyclical Fides et Ratio (1998) that ―Faith and Reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth‖. The opened book, the cross and the dove symbolize the eternal Logos - God the Father, the cross of Jesus, which, according to St. Paul is the wisdom of God, and the Holy Spirit that gently and constantly inspires and challenges us to seek the fullness of Truth, God Himself. Fr. Geevarghese Chediath (b. 1945) is G a priest of the Diocese of Pathanamthitta of . Chediath the Malankara Catholic Church. He had his Seminary Studies at the St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Kottayam and was ordinaed in 1969. He was Vice-Rector and later Rector at the St. Aloysius Minor Seminary, Trivandrum. Why a Crisis in the Syro-Malabar Church?
Question of Ancestral Traditions A Crisis in the Syro-Malabar Church Francis Kanichikattil [In this article Dr. Kanichikattil discusses how to solve the problem namely ‘Question of Ancestral Traditions’ (Heritage) in the Syro-Malabar Church, which, he thinks, should include not only Syriac but early Apostolic and later Colonial Traditions] Introduction: “Return to Ancestral Traditions” was the call of Vat.II to all Individual Churches. “if they have (unduly) fallen away due to circumstances of times or persons, they are to strive to return to their ancestral traditions”.1 Return to the vision and foresight of the ancestors is the most sublime duty and right of the young generation since that vision and foresight of the forefathers would undoubtedly strengthen their steps in achieving the goals initiated by them. The Syro-Malabar Church, an individual Church with Major Archiepiscopal status, was known in history as ‘Malabar Church’ due to its geographical position in the south-west coast of India. The Christians were known by the name ‘Thomas Christians’ or simply Nazranikal (followers of the one from Nazareth) resembling the other names such as Naboothiris, Nairs in the Kerala society. We do not go into the details of the historical evidences regarding the foundation of the Christian Church in Kerala; rather we take into account the consensus that Thomas the Apostle founded the Church in India in the first century itself. The prefix ‘Syro’ (Syriac) was added to Malabar Church officially towards the end of 19th century in order to distinguish the Malabar Church which used Syriac as the liturgical language from the Latin Church in India. -

Palackal Thoma Malpan [പാല േതാാ മപാ] (b. circa * 1780 at [South] Pallippuram [[െത] പിറം / േചംപിറം / ഐരാണിളം], near Shertallay [േചല / കരറം], in Alleppey [ആലഴ], Kingdom of Travancore [തിവിതാം രാജം]; d. there, † 16th January 1841) was an illustrious secular priest [ഇടവകാര] from the Catholic Church of St. Thomas [Syro-Malabar Church] then under the Vicariate-Apostolic of Verapoly [വരാഴ] and later under the Archdiocese of Ernakulam [എറണാളം]; the senior founder of the first Cœnobite Order of the St. Thomas Christians, the Third Order of Carmelites Discalced [കലീ നിാക ാം സഭ / Carmelites of Mary Immaculate]; and the founder and Rector of the first Seminary run by the St. Thomas Christians, first at Pallippuram and later at Mannanam [മാാനം] near Kottayam [േകായം]. (The title Malpan, from the Syriac word malpānā, denotes his status as a preceptor of priests.) After his ordination in 1807 consequent to studies under Thachil Abraham Malpan [തി അറാഹാം മപാ] (the younger brother of Thachil Thariyath Matthoo Tharakan, Esq. [തി തരിയ് മാ തരക അവക]), he was appointed the Secretary for the St. Thomas Christians and Counsellor to the Bishop Mgr. Raymond Roviglia of St. Joseph, O. C. D., Vicar-Apostolic during 1803–1815; he continued to be a counsellor to the Vicars-Apostolic for the rest of his life, even after he resigned the position of Secretary in 1815. As secretary and counsellor, he was instrumental to several reforms in the Catholic Church of Kerala: the practice of St. Thomas Christian priests and seminarians wearing cassocks [േളാവ] was introduced (previously, they had dressed in a way resembling the Jacobite clerics); the custom of episcopal visits [വിസീ] to parishes was begun; the confessional [സാര്] was made obligatory in all churches; walled cemeteries [െസമിേരി] were built for all churches (earlier, the dead had been buried in the open compound); and confraternities [െകാിരിയാ, ദശനസഹം] were started in the St.
