JOHN FROM MALTA by PAUL CASSAR* DURING iTS two hundred and sixty-eight years of domination over the Maltese Islands (1530-1798), the Order of St. John of Jerusalem waged an unceasing war against the Barbary and Turkish pirates in the Mediterranean. Those who escaped death were enslaved by the victor, irrespective of sex or age, or whether they were combatants or simply passengers and crews of unarmed vessels; so much so that slavery came to form a sort of institution regulated by definite rules concerning the selling, employment and ransoming of captives by either side. A Maltese boy, Gio Maria Zammit, was captured by the Barbary corsairs in 1734 at the age of fifteen years and sold as a slave at Tripoli in North Africa. After twelve years in captivity he renounced the Catholic faith and turned Moslem, as he was constrained to do by his master. He subsequently married a Moslem girl by whom he had several children. He finally succeeded in escaping from Tripoli after forty-three years in captivity, and reached Rome with his fourteen-year-old son Joseph. Gio Maria Zammit, by this time sixty-five years old, abjured the Moslem religion, became reconciled with the Catholic faith and had his son baptised in Rome. He eventually came with his son to Malta but being unable to find work, he decided to return to Rome in search of employment. In those days no one could leave Malta without the express permission of the Grand Court of the Castellania.

Henry VI CHAPTER ONE A gentle breeze from the north-east after a night of rain, and the washed sky over Malta had a particular quality in its light that sharpened the lines of the noble buildings, bringing out all the virtue of the stone; the air too was a delight to breathe, and the city of Valletta was as cheerful as though it were fortunate in love or as though it had suddenly heard good news. This was more than usually remarkable in a group of naval officers sitting in the bowered court of Searle's hotel. To be sure, they looked out upon the arcaded Upper Baracca, filled with soldiers, sailors and civilians pacing slowly up and down in a sunlight so brilliant that it made even the black hoods the Maltese women wore look gay, while the officers' uniforms shone like splendid flowers. A cosmopolitan crowd, for although most of the colour was the scarlet and gold of the British army many of the nations engaged in the war against Napoleon were represented and the shell-pink of Kresimir's Croats, for example, made a charming contrast with the Neapolitan hussars' silver-laced blue. And then beyond and below the Baracca there was the vast sweep of the Grand Harbour, pure sapphire today, flecked with the sails of countless small craft plying between Valletta and the great fortified headlands on the other side, St Angelo and Isola, and the men-of-war, the troopships and the victuallers, a sight to please any sailor's heart.

Join We Players and the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park on an afternoon sail through the San Francisco Bay on the 1891 scow schooner Alma, as we spin yarns from Homer’s ancient epic, The Odyssey. The Alma and her Aquatic Park environs evoke a strong connection to The Odyssey and the poem’s central theme of travel, exploration, and homecoming. It is a story of a great and difficult journey, the search for self, the discovery of other worlds and people, and the ultimate journey home. We Players is excited to introduce new ways of experiencing and appreciating the waters of our local landscape, in partnership with the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. Join us this fall, for one of only eleven performances of The Odyssey on Alma. Less than forty seats are available for each performance. In the main, these logs were completed by the Officer of the Watch (OOW) when the ship was at sea and by the Quartermaster (QM) when the ship was in harbour. Each log, representing one calendar month, was completed in PENCIL, with no erasure allowed. Any errors were crossed out and the correct data entered, and each log was signed and dated by the Captain on a weekly basis. There does not appear to be any strict rule regarding what goes in the logs. Some OOWs were diligent in completing the logs, some were not. The same is true of entries made by the QM. Quite a few log entries have NOT been transcribed. When at sea, there are numerous entries regarding changes of course eg.”a/c to avoid fishing vessels” and in harbour, many references to the Guard Boat or MOD Police patrols, or ships passing. As is the way of things, many entries are abbreviated, have acronyms or are accepted Naval terms or expressions and these are shown ‘as is’. Ships names are shown in upper case eg. JUPITER or RFA OLMEDA. Shore Establishments are styled as follows: HMS Mercury Any data show in italics is information added to clarify or question the log entries, and entries shown in quotes are verbatim.

Such assistance should be a key service to our members and therefore we are instigating access through a special link on the AYH website. Many of us will have started research in yacht club records and club libraries, which are often haphazard and incomplete.     INTRODUCTION One of the missions of The Friends of Valley Forge Park is the promotion of our historical heritage so that the spirit of what took place over two hundred years ago continues to inspire both current and future generations of all people. While a simple listing of facts, it is the hope that it will instill in some the desire to dig a little deeper into the fascinating stories underlying the events presented.     Journal of Maltese History, volume 5, number 2 (2018) Maritime Areas, Ports and Sea Routes: Defining Space and Connectivity between Malta and the Eastern Mediterranean 1770-1820 Frank Theuma Independent Researcher Introduction The numerous ships that arrived in Malta from eastern Mediterranean points of origin and were recorded systematically in the quarantine and arrival registers1 [henceforth QR] of Malta reveal an intense maritime traffic (1770-1815). They reveal a substantial connection between a large number of eastern Mediterranean commercial nodes and ports and the port of Malta. These ports and nodes were dotted over a wide geographical expanse, they differed widely in scale and importance, and presented different economic profiles, that changed and evolved along the years. Some rose from nothing, like the Black Sea port of Odessa.2 Some expanded in their operation, others contracted and declined. Some were massive trading hubs, like Smyrna, Salonica and Alexandria, with a wide range of far-flung sea and land connections, and from where hundreds of sailing voyages started, some of which found themselves sailing into the port of Malta. These hubs dealt with equally massive amounts of cargo consisting of a wide diversity of products that originated from proximal and distant locations in their extensive hinterlands. Others, like a number of locations that dotted the coasts of Epirus, the gulf of Arta, on the western coast of Greece, or the Gulf of Patras were mere beaches; landings that served as an outlet for a local product. At the latter, mariners anchored or beached their small vessels to take on board cargo that was limited in both variety and quantity.
